From the Pastor’s Desk

Happy Easter! I pray that you receive abundant graces from our risen Lord. He has conquerored death and given us new hope. We now live in the light of his Resurrection. Let me pass along information from a letter I received from Judge Elizabeth Brown. She wrote: “The Franklin County Juvenile Court is looking for concerned, committed, community members to serve as volunteers to make a difference in the lives of juveniles who have been charged with first-time misdemeanor offenses, their victim(s), and the community-at-large as part of its Restorative Justice Circles Program. The Restorative Justice Circles Program is a community based, Court-

operated diversion program designed to provide an alternative response from the juvenile justice system for youth with first-time misdemeanor offenses between the ages of 10 and 17. The program is opening a new Circle serving the Far East Side areas of Whitehall, Blacklick, East Livingston and Reynoldsburg. The next New Volunteer Training is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please contact: Rachelle Randolph at 614-525-3130 or via email at Rachelle_Randolph@fccourts.org no later than April 16.” I strongly encourage anyone who is willing and able to participate in a Restorative Justice Circle to do so. Such programs dramatically impact young people in our city and redirect them to a better future. Please reach out to Ms. Randolph if you would like to improve the lives of teenagers who find themselves in court for the first time. One last thing: I will be away from the parish for the first two weeks of April. This Sunday, I will fly to Phoenix to be on week-long retreat with dozens of other priests from around the country. Then I will fly to Los Angeles for several days. I will visit with my oldest niece who lives in Southern California, as well as a house of formation for our sisters, the Missionary Servants of the Word. Please pray for me while I am away and be assured of my prayers for you. May the Lord bless you throughout the upcoming week.

The Sisters’ Corner

Next Sunday, April 8, we are celebrating the Feast of Divine Mercy. We will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 12:30 p.m. Mass until 3:00 p.m. At that time, we will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and have Benediction. Immediately following Benediction, we will have a gathering and a play (in Spanish) in the basement. (This event is bilingual.) All Saints Academy Catholic School

The school is now on Easter break. Pray that our students and faculty have a refreshing and grace-filled vacation. While they are away, Capitol Windows will install more new windows on the north side of the building. We’re happy to move forward with this project! Registration update: Our Pre-school is now full for the 2018-2019 school year. We are currently taking names for the wait list. The K-8 classes are also filling up. Begin a new life after Easter

Why do Catholics offer the sign of peace?

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. April 2018

During the Mass, we offer the Sign of Peace in preparation for receiving Communion. After his Resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples in the Upper Room. Although his friends had abandoned him, Jesus

forgave them, saying: “Peace be with you”

(John 20:19). When we offer each other the Sign of

Peace, we imitate Christ. The Sign of Peace is also a sign of

spiritual unity. Just as Jesus reconciled with his disciples, we are called to reconcile with each other.

The promise of the Resurrection is that faithful followers of Jesus will have new life. Whether we had a fruitful Lent or were lukewarm in our resolve, we can begin now to become new creations. Make an examination. Call on the Holy Spirit to reveal what is keeping you from becoming the person God intends. Make an examination of your life as you live it. Look at your prayer life, your sacramental life, your dedication to spiritual growth. Do you share your faith? Do you serve others with love? Face the truth with courage. It can be discouraging to look honestly at our

many faults. Remember, though, that God understands we aren’t perfect. He asks us to act with integrity and

relentlessly �ght against sin. Being a sinner is not the worst

condition – remaining one is. Devise a plan. Decide what needs to change and make a plan. Write it down and commit to it. Sometimes making a brave life change entails leaving bad company behind. Often it means changing entrenched habits. Change may be uncomfortable but growth can’t happen without it.

Take the �rst steps. New life comes through God. Entrust your plan for change to him. Spend at least 15 minutes a day in prayer, asking for inspiration and strength. Then take the �rst steps toward new life.

The pregnancy and birth of their fourth child was very dif�cult, but Gianna was willing to risk her life for the life of the child. St. Gianna gave birth to a baby girl and died a week later. She is the patroness of mothers, physicians, and unborn children.

Jesus’ Resurrection – the most important event in human history – is how we know that what he said and did

while on Earth is

true and his promises to

us are trustworthy. During his public ministry, Jesus spoke and acted as God. He promised that if we follow him, we will have eternal life. Either he was God and had the power to make it true, or he was a mere man claiming to be someone he wasn’t. That Jesus rose from the dead – a fact veri�ed by more than 500 eyewitness accounts – means that his word can be trusted. He warned of the speci�cs of his own death, predicted his Resurrection, and proved that he really is God. Therefore, his promises of eternal life are real, too. The Resurrection gives us hope. “By his death, Christ liberates us from sin; by his Resurrection, he opens for us the way to a new life” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #654). All those who die in God’s friendship will live with him forever.

April 3 – St. Richard of Chichester (1253). Born in England, St. Richard studied law at Bologna. Known for his holiness and administrative skills, he was named archbishop of Chichester, but King Henry III refused to let him rule until the pope threatened the king with excommunication. Even as an archbishop, St. Richard lived a humble life. He died in Dover while preaching a crusade. April 8 – Divine Mercy Sunday (1935). In 1931, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina and asked that the Sunday after Easter become the “Feast of

Mercy.” Jesus promised anyone who honors him as King of Mercy and prays the Chaplet of Divine Mercy – the prayer he gave St. Faustina – would receive special graces and great mercy. April 25 – St. Mark the Evangelist (1st Century). St. Mark wrote the second Gospel largely based on St. Peter’s perspective. Mark accompanied Saints Paul and Barnabas (Mark’s cousin) on their missionary journey through the island of Cyprus and is credited with founding the Church of Alexandria.

Daily prayer, weekly Mass attendance, and regular Confession form the foundation for a solid Catholic life. Yet, discipleship calls us to more. Discipleship moves us to make a “conscious, �rm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost” to ourselves (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops). A conscious decision. Disciples consciously resolve to follow Jesus with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. This governing resolution – renewed every day – controls all other decisions in a disciple’s life.

Demonstrated by action. Our discipleship is visible to others by our devotion to the Church and by the good works

we perform. Our charitable actions are offered in obedience to Jesus’ example – and instructions – in the New Testament. The Church suggests the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy as guidelines.

Despite the cost. “So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple”

(Luke 14:33). To be Christian isn’t always comfortable. Yet, disciples persist out of love, no matter the cost.

What doesthe Resurrection mean for us?

This Gospel comes from Jesus’ Last Supper Discourse, a kind of farewell speech for his disciples. Jesus told his disciples – and us – that without him, we can do nothing. He used a familiar image to explain. A grapevine has a main stem and smaller branches growing from it. Just as the main stem is the source of life for the branches, so Jesus is the source of spiritual life for us. We received this life when we were “grafted onto” Jesus in Baptism. We preserve this life by taking his words seriously and

striving to live by them. Then our hearts will become like his. When

we pray in Jesus’ name, we can trust that God will

answer our prayers. There is a “catch” to following Jesus, though. Just as the

branches on a grapevine are pruned – cut short – to

bear fruit, we will encounter dif�culties and even

persecution. Yet, Jesus reminds us that if we remain faithful to him, this pruning will work for our good and God’s glory. Then we’ll become the saints we were called to be.

¿Por qué se dan los católicos la paz?

Durante la misa nos damos la paz como preparación para recibir la Comunión. Después de su Resurrección, Jesús se apareció a sus discípulos en el cenáculo. Aunque sus amigos lo habían abandonado, Jesús los perdonó diciendo:

“La paz esté con ustedes” (Juan 20:19). Cuando nos damos el signo de la paz, imitamos a Cristo. El signo de la paz

es también un signo de unidad espiritual. Igual que

Jesús se reconcilió con sus discípulos, así también se nos

pide que nos reconciliemos entre nosotros.

La promesa de la Resurrección nos asegura que los seguidores leales de Jesús tendrán vida nueva. Tanto si nuestra Cuaresma dio sus frutos como si �aqueamos en nuestra resolución, ahora podemos convertirnos en criaturas nuevas. Examine. Pida al Espíritu Santo que le revele lo que le impide convertirse en la persona que Dios quiere que sea. Haga un examen de su vida tal como la vive. Revise su vida de oración, su vida sacramental, su dedicación al crecimiento espiritual. ¿Comparte su fe con otras personas? ¿Sirve a los demás con amor? Enfréntese a la verdad con valentía. Quizá desanime observar nuestros errores con honradez. Pero recuerde que Dios

entiende que no somos perfectos. Nos pide que obremos con integridad y que luchemos implacablemente contra el pecado. Ser pecador no es la peor condición: seguir

siéndolo lo es. Conciba un plan. Decida qué

necesita cambiar y haga un plan. Escríbalo y comprométase a seguirlo. A veces realizar un cambio valiente en la vida implica dejar atrás las malas compañías. A veces implica abandonar costumbres arraigadas. El cambio puede ser incómodo, pero no se puede crecer sin él. Dé los primeros pasos. La vida nueva llega a través

de Dios. Confíele su plan de cambio. Pase al menos 15 minutos al día en oración, pidiendo inspiración y fuerza. Luego dé los primeros pasos hacia la vida nueva.

Santa Gianna Beretta Molla Nacida en el seno

de una amplia familia católica en Italia, santa Gianna estudió medicina y se hizo médico. Abrió su consulta médica en Mesero, donde conoció a su esposo. El embarazo y el parto de su cuarto hijo fue muy difícil, pero Gianna arriesgó su vida por la de su bebé. Santa Gianna dio a luz a una niña y murió una semana más tarde. El hecho de que Jesús se levantara de entre los muertos—algo veri�cado por el relato de más de 500 testigos—signi�ca que nos podemos �ar de su palabra. Nos advirtió de detalles especí�cos sobre su muerte, predijo su Resurrección y demostró que es realmente Dios. Así que sus promesas de vida eterna son también reales. La Resurrección nos da esperanza. “Por su muerte Cristo nos libera del pecado, por su Resurrección nos abre el acceso a una nueva vida” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica #654). Todos los que mueren en la amistad con Dios vivirán con él eternamente.

3 de abril – San Ricardo de Chichester (1253). Nacido en Inglaterra, san Ricardo estudió leyes en Bolonia. Conocido por su santidad y por sus destrezas administrativas, fue nombrado arzobispo de Chichester, pero Enrique III le impidió que gobernara hasta que el papa lo amenazó con la excomunión. San Ricardo vivió una vida humilde, incluso de arzobispo. Murió en Dover mientras predicaba una cruzada. 8 de abril – Domingo de la Divina Misericordia (1935). Jesús se le apareció a santa Faustina y le pidió que el domingo después de Pascua se convirtiera en la

“Fiesta de la Misericordia”. Jesús prometió que cualquiera que lo venere como Rey de la Misericordia y rece la Corona de la Divina Misericordia—la oración que le entregó a santa Faustina—recibirá gracias especiales y misericordia en abundancia. 25 de abril—El evangelista san Marcos (siglo I). San Marcos escribió el segundo Evangelio, basándose ampliamente en la perspectiva de san Pedro. Marcos acompañó a los santos Pablo y Bernabé (que era primo de Marcos) en su viaje misionero por la isla de Chipre y se le atribuye la fundación de la Iglesia de Alejandría.

La oración diaria, la asistencia semanal a misa y la confesión frecuente son los cimientos de una vida católica sólida. Pero el discipulado nos pide más. El discipulado nos mueve a tomar una “decisión consciente y �rme, puesta en acción, de ser seguidores de Jesús cueste lo que cueste” (Conferencia episcopal de los EEUU). Una decisión consciente. Los discípulos decidimos conscientemente seguir a Jesús con todo nuestro corazón, nuestra alma, nuestra mente y nuestra fuerza. Esta resolución rectora —renovada cada día—controla todas las otras decisiones en la vida de los discípulos.

Demostrada por la acción. Nuestro discipulado es visible a los demás por nuestra devoción a la Iglesia y por las buenas obras

que realizamos. Nuestros actos caritativos se ofrecen obedeciendo el ejemplo—y las

instrucciones—de Jesús en el Nuevo Testamento. La Iglesia sugiere como directrices las Obras de

Misericordia Corporales y Espirituales. Cueste lo que cueste. “De la misma manera,

cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todo lo que posee, no puede ser mi discípulo” (Lucas 14:33). Ser cristiano no

siempre es cómodo. Sin embargo, los discípulos perseveran por amor, cueste lo que cueste.

¿Qué signi�ca la Resurrección para nosotros? Esta lectura evangélica procede del

discurso de Jesús durante la Última Cena, una especie de despedida de sus discípulos. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos—y a nosotros— que sin él no podemos hacer nada. Usó una conocida imagen para explicarlo. Una vid tiene un tronco principal y muchas ramitas, los sarmientos, que salen de él. Lo mismo que el tronco principal es la fuente de vida para los sarmientos, así Jesús es la fuente de la vida espiritual para nosotros. Recibimos esta vida cuando nos “injertaron” en Jesús con el Bautismo. Conservamos esta vida tomándonos sus palabras con seriedad y

esforzándonos por vivir de acuerdo a ellas. Luego nuestros corazones serán como el suyo. Cuando rezamos en nombre de Jesús

podemos estar seguros de que Dios atenderá

nuestras oraciones. Pero hay un

“inconveniente” al seguir a Jesús. Lo mismo que se

podan los sarmientos de una vid para que den fruto, así

también nosotros encontraremos di�cultades e incluso persecución. Sin

embargo Jesús nos recuerda que si le somos leales, esa poda será por nuestro bien y por la gloria de Dios. Luego alcanzaremos la santidad a la que estamos llamados.
