Host/Helper Manual Christ The King Catholic Church

Being An Alpha Host or HelperThe role of hosts and helpers in Alpha is important, challenging, and very rewarding. You will help lead your group through an exciting adventure to discover Jesus. As host or helper your role is to love the people at your table. The overall goal of Alpha is for the guests to have a conversion experience to Jesus and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This is achieved by the teamwork of all the Alpha team. As hosts and helpers your focus is the dynamics of your group.

The role of the host is to facilitate discussion in the small group and to create a welcoming atmosphere where guess feel free to ask honest questions about the Christian faith.

The role of the Alpha helper is different from the host, but it is no less important. The helper is to assist the host in creating a welcoming atmosphere and attend to the practical needs of the guests.

Both host and the helpers have unique roles to play in Alpha. God can and does provide or fill in for all that we lack, but when we perform our role with love, we increase the opportunity for miraculous things to happen!

The Outline of Host and Helper Responsibilities1. Between each session

Pray for your guests by name daily and the entire Alpha Course. Review the upcoming weekly session ahead of time, see

http://www.ctkcc.net/alphateam Hosts and helpers should communicate with each other after and between sessions to

make sure guest questions or issues are addressed. Stay spiritually strong. Be attentive to the Holy Spirit and remember that it is His job to

reveal the love of Jesus to your group.

2. The team pre-meeting 45 minutes prior to each session Please be prompt for the pre-meeting. This is a time for the session leader to address

administrative matters and to pray together. Attendance at the pre-session meetings is not optional. This meeting is an integral

component of the Alpha Course.

3. Prior to the start of each session Warmly greet guests as they arrive. Learn the names of each guest, and then call them by their name. Show genuine

interest in them.

4. At each session Greeting The session leader begins promptly and welcomes all. At the beginning of the first session, your Alpha session leader will run through the

format of each session. You may need to remind your guests periodically of these guidelines. If you have new people join your group in Week 2 or 3 you will want to address them individually.



Meal The meal begins when the session leader tells the meal coordinator to “release” the

tables. Between the host and helper arrange to bring a dessert for your table. Please continue

to do this for the remainder of the Alpha Course. More than likely, over the course of a few weeks, guests will offer to bring the dessert. The idea behind the host or helper providing the dessert is to build a sense of community

There will be an announcement that the next segment of the session will begin in 5 minutes.

Befriend guests, particularly during the meal: Get to know the guests by asking simple questions about family, hobbies, favorite food, etc. Avoid long and detailed discussion about yourself.

Introduction of Session The session leader introduces the session topic and tells a joke.

Time of WorshipAs the sessions go forward the worship time will move towards greater participation. Each session will have a suggestion for worship. The initial weeks will feel awkward, however this will change as alpha progresses.

The talk DVD immediately after worship. After the DVD allow a 5-minute break before directing everyone into group discussion.

Small group discussion Remember that everything said in a session is confidential to the group. The group is

intended to be a “safe” place for all guests. Affirm every person and their contribution to the small group, even if you do not agree

with their position. Listening with acceptance to each person and what they have to say is the best approach to help a guest feel welcome.

Refrain from using Christian or Catholic jargon or references that may be unknown to the guests. However, Christian jargon, illustrations, phrases, and references used in the episode are encouraged for use in discussion.

Do not distribute any material to your guests, Catholic or otherwise, during the course. Remember that a pack of breath mints might save the day! There will be an announcement that the evening will end in 5 minutes.

Dismissal Alpha sessions end promptly. Turn in the completed Host Feedback Form to the session leader.


Specific Host ResponsibilitiesHost responsibilities focus on leading the group and ensuring there is a vibrant group discussion.

Discussion Ground RulesIt’s important to establish early how the group is to operate. By clearly establish ground rules that are the basis for discussion the group will be able to develop a trust in the host’s ability to guide the discussion. The ground rules below are to be read and explained at each table for the first 2-3 weeks of Alpha. It is to be read by the host and addressed to the guests. This establishes an agreement that the host will moderate the flow of discussion, keep order, and guard the dignity and respect of all. This is less about Alpha content but rather a statement about how personal interactions will take place.

The mere reading of these ground rules will not establish it as the operating principle. People may not be paying attention, may not hear it, understand it, or believe it applies to them. What establishes the operating order of a group is the leader and what he allows. Therefore it’s important to intentionally look for opportunities to apply the ground rules early, usually a domineering talker or side discussions are most typical and need to be addressed.

Suggestions for a successful discussion: In general keep questions simple– What do you think? How do you feel? Encourage the group to give answers to questions that are brought up, rather than

answering yourself. Be comfortable with a few minutes of silence and resist the temptation to answer your

own question. Give people the opportunity to respond to what they have heard and ask questions. See appendix for additional help regarding difficult group situations. Steer clear of slandering any opinion, religious view, or person. Model humility. An effective small group leader will resist giving the “right” answer or a

“biblical” answer, and may even chose to look foolish at times. However, if the guest’s answers are so far off the mark, it’s acceptable at the close of the evening for the host to summarize the discussion gently and say something like, “This is what I have come to understand...”


Alpha Table Discussion Ground Rules

I, as our host, will moderate the flow of discussion at the table. My intention is to encourage meaningful discussion and guard the dignity and respect of all.

We are to show mutual respect for each other. Only one person speaks at a time, separate side discussions are disrespectful. One person should not dominate the discussion. No one is required to talk. Everything said is confidential to the group. Please feel free to contribute to the discussion; all questions or comments are welcome.

Be attentive to the guest who seems to be progressing at the slowest rate and make every effort to make them feel safe, cared for, and loved.

Resist arguments. No one is won into the Kingdom of God through an argument.

Specific Helper ResponsibilitiesSpecific helper responsibilities focus on supporting the host and serving the group in a way that they experience a pleasant and rewarding time.

In general Wait on the guests; remove items from the table for the guests without causing a

distraction to the presentation or discussion. Keep the table clean and inviting. Clean up your table and area at the end of each session. By being comfortable with worship, you can instill confidence in the guests. Silently observe and note conditions that the host may not be able to focus on. When choosing a seat at the table, sit where you will be able to subtly observe the guest’s

reactions, both good and bad. Pay attention to the dynamics of the group. Are there particular issues that should be

discussed with the host?

During the discussions Keep your talking time to a minimum and when you do speak, do so briefly with the intent

to spur conversation, it is the host’s role to facilitate the conversation. Silence is acceptable. Don’t jump in and answer if no one talks. Don’t redirect the conversation yourself; simply support the perspective of the host, if

needed. Set an example for the guests, they may be watching you to see how you act. Monitor the time and give a 5-minute warning to host prior the end of the session.


Host and Helper Notes--Session 1: Is There More to Life Than This?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meetingThis is a time for the session leader to address administrative matters and to pray together.

GreetingYou will meet your guests for the first time at this session. Remember, this is a graced-opportunity to form new relationships.

MealRelax, enjoy the meal, and focus on getting to know your guests. There is no prayer before the meals or at any other time.

Introduction of Session Opening introduction of topic and a joke by the session leader.

Time of worshipTypically Week #1 simply uses one song –with voluntary participation.

The talkDVD plays immediately after worship.

Small group discussionThe small group discussion consists of the following icebreakers exercises that help everyone at the table get to know each other. The goal is to have fun, not to plow through and complete all the icebreakers.

1. Name Game. Each person is to add an adjective before their name that describes them in some way, (e.g., Active Al, Silly Sue, etc.). The host should start, followed by the helper. The second person repeats the first person’s adjective/name and then adds their combination to the list. This continues around the group until all have had a turn.

2. What made you decide to come on the Alpha Course? Start with someone who is likely to admit they are a non-believer. This makes it easier for others to say what they really think. (If you start with someone who turns out to be an enthusiastic Christian already, it may be harder for the others to feel comfortable about being honest about their lack of belief).

3. Ask guests to respond to one the following questions: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to take with

you? If your house was on fire and you could only go back and get one thing, what would you

get?

Host and Helper Notes—Session 2: Who Is Jesus?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meetingRemember to arrive 45 minutes early to attend the pre-session meeting to review administrative matters and to pray together with your session leader. Ask your session leader any questions you may have about the Alpha process.

GreetingYou may have new guests this week. Spend time learning their names and something about them. Stand by your table as guests arrive and greet them warmly.

MealRelax, enjoy the meal, and focus on getting to know your guests. There is no prayer before meals this week. If guests ask, explain that they can pray individually. Remember we may have those in the group who don’t know how to pray.


Time of worshipA song will be sung, support the guests in participation and help them feel comfortable.


Small group discussion Present the ground rules for discussion; see p. 4. There may be new faces this week and depending on the number (two or more), you may

want to repeat the “Name Game” just to see if everyone remembers their adjective. Don’t dismiss this; it’s a very important device that will help the group in the coming weeks.

Review the tips for having a vibrant groups discussion on p, 4. Are you comfortable with silence? Remember as a host you are a facilitator, not a teacher.

Only if the silence is a recurring “feature” of your group should the helper assist. It can be helpful to re-phrasing the discussion questions or re-ordering them to fit the group.


Ice Breakers: (These can be done during meal time.)You may choose one of these or if you did both in the Week 1, you can just review names. Please remember that you’ll need to allow 20-25 minutes for discussion of the video. If you have one or at the most two new people, rather than have everyone go through the name game, just ask the new guests to choose an adjective for themselves and then have each guest repeat their name and adjective from the prior week.

2. Take an imaginary walk with me. We are out walking on the church grounds and we run into Jesus. If you could ask Him one question and you knew you would get an answer, what would it be? The host again should start, followed by the helper, and then allow everyone to have the opportunity to answer. The helper should jot down the questions as you may want to look at them again throughout the sessions as they pertain to topics addressed in Alpha.

3. Does your name have a special meaning or were you named after someone special?

4. If you could talk to anyone in the world who would it be? What would you ask them?

Discussion Questions:1. Before you watched the DVD, what was your concept of Jesus? Has it changed? If so, in what

way?

2. What aspects of the evidence presented today did you find convincing or not convincing?

3. Who do you think Jesus is?

4. If you had a chance to meet Jesus, how would you feel and what would you say to Him?

5. What was your biggest takeaway from this session?

Host and Helper Notes—Session 3: Why Did Jesus Die?


GreetingThere is no general guest check-in now. All guests should be able to go directly to their tables. Each host is responsible for checking-in their guests. There shouldn’t be any new participants added to the small groups at this point.

MealRelax, enjoy the meal, and focus on getting to know your guests. The meal blessing prayer will be introduced next week. Hopefully you remembered to bring a dessert to pass for the table and will do so for remaining sessions.


Time of worshipFully participate in worship and set a good example for your guests.


Small group discussionRemind the guests about the ground rules for discussion.

Last week we explored who Jesus is, which may produce some new questions this week as guests begin to think through what was seen, heard, and discussed in last week’s session. Helpers, please make note of these questions for future discussion or research the answers.


Ice Breakers: (These can be done during meal time.)If you need an icebreaker for this session here is a suggestion:

Describe a time when you experienced buyer’s remorse when you may have made a major purchase that you later came to regret. What would you have done differently if you had to make that purchase again?

Discussion Questions:1. Was there an illustration or story from the DVD that stood out to you?

2. Do you feel that sin is an outdated concept or is it something you think about?

3. How do you respond to the word “sin” and the word “forgiveness?”

4. What else, or who else, do we tend to put our trust in?

5. What is your biggest take away from this session?

6. Do you believe that Jesus died for “YOU” or is that hard to accept?

7. Does anyone struggle with the thought that we are to forgive those who do us wrong?

8. Do you think we understand sin the way God wants us to? Explain.

9. Before watching the video, why did you believe Jesus died the way that He did? For whom did you believe He did this? Has your view changed at all due to what you learned?

Dismissal Mention the Alpha Holy Spirit Weekend to the group and take reservations. Before dismissal make a table contact sheet including phone numbers and emails for the

guests. This helps in the event a guest should need to contact them if they won’t be able to make a session. Let them know that the information remains confidential and will not be shared outside the scope of internal Alpha communication.

Host and Helper Notes—Session 4: How Can I Have Faith?


GreetingAll guests should be able to go directly to their tables. Each host is responsible for checking-in their guests.

MealRelax and enjoy the meal and your guests. Simple prayer before meals can be started this session if you feel your group is ready. Next week’s session topic is prayer.


Time of worshipThere will be two songs; fully participate in worship and set a good example for your guests.


Small group discussion Are you comfortable with silence? Remember as a host you are a facilitator not a teacher. Only

if the silence is a recurring “feature” of your group should the helper assist. Mention the Holy Spirit Weekend and how important it is to the Alpha Course. Remind

everyone of the date for the Holy Spirit Weekend and take their reservations. If anyone was absent the last session, you’ll want to ask for their contact information. Select in advance the questions you think will get the most engagement from their group, re-

phrasing and re-ordering as needed.


Ice Breakers: (These can be done during meal time.)If you were to write a memoir, what would the title be? 8 words or less"

Discussion Questions:1. Was there an illustration or story from the DVD that stood out to you?

2. Consider the portrait of Jesus and the door with no handle on Jesus’ side. How do you feel about this? What does the door represent to you?

3. What does our door look like? Did it look different at one time?

4. What are your earliest memories or impressions of God?

5. The speaker tonight talked about a ‘relationship with God.’ What does that suggest to you? How would you describe your relationship with God?

6. Do you think that most people would describe faith as based on feelings rather than facts? How do you describe faith?

7. What does it mean to you to have the Holy Spirit living inside you?

8. It has been said that Christianity will make a change in your character. How do you feel about that?

9. A famous painting shows Jesus standing at the door and knocking. Sacred Scripture quotes Jesus as saying “...I will come in and eat with them and them with me?” (Rev 3:20). Note well that Jesus doesn’t stop at “I will come in and eat with them”, but continues with “and them with me.” What do you think Jesus is inviting us to? Does anyone have any reflections they might like to share on the painting and what struck you about it?

10. What has to happen in our lives before we are willing to open the door of our hearts to Jesus?

11. What is your biggest take away from today’s session?

Host and Helper Notes—Session 5: Why and How Do I Pray?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meetingThe upcoming Holy Spirit Weekend is for everyone to attend—hosts, helpers, and guests. Our desire is that the Holy Spirit Weekend serves as a gift to the hosts and helpers as much as it is for our guests. Please obtain from your guests their RSVP for the Holy Spirit Weekend. You may simply write their names on the Host Feedback Form. Please encourage your guests to bring a Bible to the Holy Spirit Weekend if they have one.

GreetingBy now the greetings process should be casual and genuinely warm.

MealIf you haven’t done so already, lead the group in a simple prayer of thanksgiving before you start to eat your meal. This will become a regular part of our sessions going forward. In future sessions, ask your helper to lead with a short prayer as well. Please make the prayer simple, nothing complicated. Perhaps a short sentence thanking God for today and what you are about to eat is best at this time.




Small group discussion If there are guests who need to be reminded about side discussion, dominant personalities, or

other group dynamic issues it may be appropriate to review the discussion grounds rules. Please remember to review any guest’s questions from the last session or answer any new

ones. Consider using follow up questions, "how do you feel about that? what do YOU think?" to help

guests start to move past their "masks"...i.e. of talking about children, talking about what others think, etc. the topic of prayer seems to lend it self to making a step forward in personal sharing


Ice Breaker: (These can be done during meal time if you wish.)Can you think of some event or someone in your childhood that has helped you become who you are today? How are you getting along in Alpha? Is Alpha answering your questions? How can we be of further help to you?

Discussion Questions:1. If you pray, what was it like when you first began to pray?

2. Why do you believe there is value to prayer?

3. What interests or intrigues you most about prayer?

4. What thoughts do you have about the idea of God listening to your prayers?

5. Have you ever seen coincidences happen when you pray?

6. In the DVD, various reasons for prayer are given. Which do you relate to and why?

7. How do you feel about praying at all times through the day?

8. Do you feel like you have been let down by God when your prayers don’t seem to be answered? How do you handle these feelings? Do you give up?

9. Have any of you had prayers that you thought were not answered, and yet later found they were? Was it in the way you anticipated?

Dismissal You may begin to introduce prayer at the end of this session. Hosts should begin with a simple,

uncomplicated prayer and invite others to join in if they wish. There is beauty in simplicity. Helpers please feel free to join in also. Here are a few examples: “Dear Jesus, thank you for a lovely day;” “Dear Lord, thank you for every member in this group.” If you have someone who couldn't be with you at the session, lift them up in prayer by name. It’s good for group members to see that when they are absent, the group misses their presence

Host and Helper Notes—Session 6: Why and How Should I Read the Bible?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meetingThere will be training to prepare hosts and helpers for the Holy Spirit Weekend and Week 10, “Does God Heal Today?” Please feel free to reach out to the Alpha coordinator or your session leader should you have any questions about praying with others.

Small group discussionThe Bible is a book that comes alive to believing Christians, but lacks impact to those who don’t believe. This week we will look at how to read the Bible.

Encourage your guests to purchase a Bible that is accurate to the original text if they don’t already have one. You may recommend the Ignatius Bible, The New Jerusalem Bible, The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE), or one that you prefer to use. Which version is best to use depends upon whether you want it primarily for prayer, for study, or to take to church to follow the readings. :

Remind everyone that the Holy Spirit Weekend, truly the best part of Alpha, is quickly approaching. If you are asked what the Holy Spirit Weekend is about, feel free to let your guests know the Holy Spirit Weekend is about learning more about the Holy Spirit and how He acts in our lives.


Ice Breaker: (These can be done during meal time if you wish.)What was your favorite book as a child and why?

Discussion Questions:1. Has anyone ever tried reading the Bible on their own? Did you try reading from cover to cover,

or just the Old Testament, or just the New Testament? If so, how did it go?

2. What do you find difficult, if anything, about reading the Bible?

3. For those who read the Bible, do you find it helps you? If so, in what ways?

4. What do you feel about the statement that the Bible is the “manual for life”?

5. Do you feel the Bible is more of a “love letter” or a “rule book”?

6. Do you feel that if you follow the Bible, that the “rules” within it restrict your freedom to enjoy life? Does the Bible take away our freedom or does it give us freedom?

7. Can you identify anything that keeps you from reading the Bible?

8. When you read the Bible, do you allow both your heart and mind to be involved or do you find that hard to do?

9. Do you find that science and the Bible conflict with each other? Has science been an obstacle to any of you in believing the teachings of the Bible?

Dismissal Continue to allow time to end with prayer. Invite the guests to offer a simple prayer

themselves if they feel comfortable. Remember: simple is good, “Dear God, please protect us as we drive home” or lift up any guests who are absent or who are ill.

Small group discussionThe talk at this session is important and comes before the Holy Spirit Weekend. Since hearing from God and being guided by God is one of the ways the Holy Spirit moves in our lives, having a grasp of this talk can make the Holy Spirit Weekend talks easier to understand. At this session, we want the guests to see that God really does have a beautiful plan for their lives. Please be attentive to the creative ways He has revealed His plan to your guests. Try to create ways for people who feel like they have “messed up” in life to see that our God is a God of second, third, and fourth chances.

Has everyone informed you of their Holy Spirit Weekend attendance? The Holy Spirit Weekend looks like this:

Holy Spirit Weekend FAQ’so Do I have to come? This day is a way for you to listen to three consecutive talks on the

Holy Spirit who is the Consoler Jesus promised to send to us. If you attend, many of your questions about the Holy Spirit will be answered.

o How important is the Holy Spirit Weekend? The Holy Spirit Weekend is important enough that many of our guests continue to talk about it long after the course is over. Many have indicated it impacted their lives in a very significant way. Those who indicate they had a less than fruitful experience on the Alpha Course did not attend the Holy Spirit Weekend.



o Will we be with our groups? Yes, your group can sit together, eat lunch together, discuss the sessions together, and pray together.

o Is childcare available? Be sure to remind your guests that childcare will not be available during the Holy Spirit Weekend.

Ice Breaker: (These can be done during meal time if you wish.)What is the most daring thing you have ever done? (Again, something you can pose at dinner.)

Discussion Questions: 1. Has anyone had a sense in the last few weeks that God has been guiding them? (Discussion

will probably flow naturally about God speaking to us through the Bible and through prayer.)

2. How do you feel about the idea of being guided by God? Do you ask for guidance?

3. Considering how God used the “misfits” to change the world—disciples; Abraham, Job, Moses, Samson, Rahab, David, John the Baptist, and Martha—how do you respond to the reality that God has plans today for individual people? What about plans for you personally?

4. Do you think God is, or has been, trying to reveal His plan to you?

5. The speaker mentioned that there are things we don’t need to ask God’s guidance for because He already provides it in the Bible. What do you think about that?

6. What did you think about the illustration of God making your mistakes into something beautiful? How do you feel about that?

7. God speaks to us and guides us in many different ways. What are some ways that you are aware of? For example, prayer, reading the Bible, prophesies, words of knowledge, pictures, angels, visions, dreams, audible voice. Do you or would you recognize God’s voice?

Dismissal Remember to close out your session with prayer that lifts up the group, including anybody

absent, and the upcoming Holy Spirit Weekend. If your group has responded well to this in the past, you might ask one of the guests if they would offer the first prayer at the next session after the Holy Spirit Weekend

Host and Helper Notes—Holy Spirit Weekend

Thank you for so faithfully witnessing to the person of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Being present for your guests, supporting them, and praying for them is helping lead them to a deeper relationship with the Lord.

There are four talks that will be shown at the Holy Spirit Weekend:1. Who is the Holy Spirit?2. What does the Holy Spirit do?3. How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?4. How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

They are shown in succession as each one builds on the other during the Holy Spirit Weekend. As a result, the rest of the Holy Spirit Weekend day is spent praying, discussing, discerning, and asking the Holy Spirit to be a part of our lives.

Encourage your guests to take part in each segment, each part is important.

Please model for your guests and encourage them to take part in the prayer ministry during the last part of the day.

Allow the Holy Spirit to continue to work in your group. There is a natural connection between God’s guidance (session # 7) and resisting evil, feel free

to refer back to session # 7 discussion if it is helpful. Hosts, please make sure you register your guests for the Celebration Dinner. Let the HH captain/session leader know who in your small group might have a testimony to

share at the Celebration Dinner. Also let the HH captain/session leader who would make a potential good small group host or

helper on a future course. If someone in your group is interested in hosting or helping with Alpha in the next term, you may encourage them to register for the next session once the registration link is uploaded.

Speak to your group regarding follow-up options including bible studies, Unbound, serving on the Alpha Team for the next term, the Upper Room, and various other courses.

Host and Helper Notes—Session 9: Why and How Should I Tell Others?

Small group discussionIt can be difficult to talk to others about the deeper or personal matters of our lives. Certainly our faith in Christ falls into this category. Some people feel that one’s faith is a private matter and should not be discussed with others.

There will be a number of opportunities for people to continue the discipleship process. Information will be handed out near the end of this term as to what will actually be offered.

Think about who in your small group may have a testimony to share at the Celebration Dinner. Also think about who would make an effective small group host or helper in a future course. Don’t forget to register your guests who will be attending the Celebration Dinner on the

registration site.


Ice Breaker: (These can be done during meal time if you wish.)Have you ever eaten at a restaurant that was outstanding and you just had to tell all your friends about it?

Discussion Questions:1. If you did not know anything about Christianity, how would you like to be told about it?

2. Have you told any of your friends, family, or co-workers that you are taking the Alpha Course? If so, what was their reaction?

3. Nicky gave the example of his mother-in-law quickly spreading the news of their child’s birth because she was excited. What do we believe the reason is that so many people are reluctant to show their excitement for Jesus? Are we like this? Are there any ways that you feel you would be comfortable spreading the news of Jesus?

4. The word “Go” was mentioned a lot in the Bible: Go and tell, go and invite. Prior to the video, were you aware that each of us is told to go spread the word of the Gospel? (Mat 28:16-20)(Mat 5:13-16)

5. Do you feel strong enough to go tell people about the Gospel? What do you feel you would have to do in order to feel comfortable doing so?

6. What did you think about Nicky’s statement that he knows of no one who ever became a Christian after having an argument with someone telling him he should?

Host and Helper Notes—Session 10: Does God Heal Today?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meetingThere is a deliberate loosening of the strict “following of an Alpha recipe” during the time of healing prayer; rather an attention to the voice of the Spirit is encouraged together with an eye towards the guests for cues for appropriate action.




The talkDVD plays. This week the talk precedes worship so the worship is right before healing prayer. Allow a 5-minute break before directing everyone into worship.

Time of worshipThis week worship is after the talk and just before healing prayer.

The Session Leader General Instructions To All The Groups1. There is no discussion after the DVD, we will be praying with our groups.2. We are allowing at least 45 minutes for the prayer time together. 3. Each group forms a circle of chairs. 4. Worship music will be used to create an atmosphere of prayer and privacy.5. This is a time for them to experience the personal healing by Jesus; not prayers for relatives,

friends or world peace. 6. Guests do not have to receive prayer if they don’t feel comfortable. 7. The guests not being prayed with are invited to also pray however they feel comfortable for

the person who is being prayed for, silently, quietly in tongues, etc.8. After all the guests have been prayed with there will be the opportunity to continue the

experience of praying with each other as the Spirit may lead.

Prayer in small groups: 1. The host begins the prayer time by invoking the Holy Spirit to come and be present among

the group.

2. Let the guests know that this is a great gift for the group to be able to pray for one another as they begin to draw the Alpha Course to its conclusion in one week.

3. As prayer begins the guests will be intently watching with some apprehension, what’s going to happen and how should they respond? Therefore, the initial time of prayer for


healing needs to be well thought out and a good pattern established. For example, the host can start by praying with the helper or someone who is known to be very open to healing.

4. Ask each guest if they would like prayer for healing. Encourage them to be specific and to address Jesus directly. Jesus frequently asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mk 10:51, Lk 18:41)

5. Ask permission to lay hands on their shoulders or head, you can quote Jesus as saying, “they (believers) will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mk 16:18) Don’t lay hands in a way that is distracting or insensitive.

6. This is a good time to encourage the guests to join along praying in tongues in order to have them experience the help of the Spirit during ministry. Be open and attentive to the gifts of the Spirit and encourage the guests to step out in faith and in love and to be confident in the power of prayer.

7. Don’t do inner healing, deliverance, unbound type of prayer, or get into counsel or advice and don’t say anything that could cause guilt or condemnation.

8. After all guests have been prayed with, close with a general prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has done. Give some words of encouragement. Depart quietly and reverently so as not to disturb other groups that may still be praying.

Dismissal There will be no formal conclusion to the session. When each group is finished, they may

quietly leave. Collect the Host Feedback Forms.

Helpful Additional Background For The Host/Helpers:In the Holy Spirit Weekend our guests have the opportunity to encounter Jesus as Savior and baptizer in the Holy Spirit. In this session they can encounter Jesus as healer. Healing is an important part of the gospel message, of the 1,257 narrative verses in the Gospels, 38.5% are devoted to describing Jesus’ healing ministry.i

The approach used in this session is to apply the Catholic charismatic teaching and tradition of healing as experienced at CTK to the Alpha session “Does God Heal Today?” The methodology of the prayer in Alpha session 10 is unique, e.g., the table leader prays for the eight guests within a 45-minute time frame.

Session 10 Objectives:1. To have the guests encounter Jesus as healer and personally experience his mercy and

compassion. 2. To also encounter Jesus in the act of Christian prayer; how people of the kingdom care for

and love each other in the power of the Spirit.3. To have signs and wonders confirm the gospel message. 4. To have the Alpha team enter deeper into the reality of power evangelization, i.e., to

experience Alpha in a fearless context.


Host/Helper Preparation For Healing Prayer (based on Mary Healy’s Healing: Bringing the Gift of God's Mercy to the World) Keys for the leader1. Intimacy with Jesus- Intimacy with Jesus is an ongoing process involving personal

commitment to the lordship of Jesus, prayer, sacraments, and a virtuous life. However, in the situation where we are praying with others one way to actively realize intimacy with Jesus is to enter into a “participation in the ministry of Jesus”. Jesus is present, all power in heaven and earth are his, he does the healing, he gives us his Spirit to empower us, and he tells us to heal the sick. We now become a visible sign of his invisible reality, our hands become extensions of his hands (Mk 16:18, Acts 4:30), and his Spirit is in us empowering to act in his love. We basically participate in the healing ministry of Jesus, a ministry extensively described in Scripture that hasn’t change with time.

2. Ask, seek, knock- We are to have a boldness and a persistence in prayer based on firm knowledge of God’s steadfast love and desire of only good for us. The boldness of blind Bartimaeus crying out to Jesus to restore his sight (Mk10: 46-52) and the persistence of the widow towards the unjust judge (Lk 18:1-8) give us examples of how to approach prayer for healing.

3. “Do whatever he tells you”. The deliberate following of an Alpha recipe is loosened during the time of healing prayer; rather an attention to the voice of the Spirit is encouraged together with an eye towards the guests for cues for appropriate action.

Prayer SelectionAfter the guest asks for healing we need to discern what type of prayer to use. Of the six types of prayer mentioned in Healing (petition, word of command, forgiveness, repentance, inner healing, and deliverance) two are appropriate for use in Alpha session #10 prayer, petition and the word of command.

The prayer of petition simply asks Jesus to heal the infirmity. It is based on a firm faith in God’s love and his desire to heal.

The word of command is addressed to the condition itself and is not addressed to God. It literally speaks into existence the restored or healed condition. This follows how Jesus and the apostles healed in scripture.

Prayer of faithBased on scripture faith is an essential element in praying for healing. Faith must be present, either in the one receiving healing as in the woman with the issue of blood, or in the one doing the praying, as in Jesus’ many instruction to his disciples attest to.

Pray very specifically, with great expectancy and confidence, using either prayers of petition or words of command or both, as the Spirit leads.

It’s always appropriate to ask the Lord for more faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Heb 11: 6)


Host and Helper Notes—Session 11: What about the Church?

(Review the Host and Helper Responsibilities pp. 2-5)The team pre-meeting Allow time for guests to fill out Guest Questionnaires. A basket will be available to collect the

forms. The goal in this session is to help guests:

o rethink their understanding of the church as an organization;o begin to understand the value of Christian fellowship; ando to see how their involvement could have a positive impact in their lives.

There are a few questions below for discussion following the DVD, but please leave enough time in your group for the following:

Discuss the prayer time from last week. What were people’s experiences? Include their responses on your Host Feedback Form.

Distribute the Alpha Questionnaire to your guests and ask them to complete them today. When filling out the evaluation forms, ask everyone to be as honest as they can be, as we hope you will also be honest. The purpose of the evaluation form is to improve the experience of everyone on the Alpha Course as we continue in the future.

Prayerfully consider which of your guests could become a host or helper.

Discussion Questions:1. During the past eleven weeks, we have covered many facets of the Christian life and you’ve

had a chance to experience some of what this means. How has God been working in your life during these past eleven weeks?

2. Throughout the Alpha Course, you have probably learned or experienced things that were different than what you knew before. Please feel comfortable sharing your experience, both positive and negative.

3. One of the images from today’s DVD is that the Church is God’s family. What do you think your role or contribution could be to this family?

4. What advice would you give someone who wants to get involved in the Church, yet questions where they can help and if they really can make a difference?

5. What role does the Church and her teachings play in our faith life? Do you feel it is a necessity?

6. Do you think a person can thrive as a Christian without attending church?

7. What is the most important thing that you will take away from the Alpha Course?

8. Are there questions that have not been answered?

Dismissal Allow time for guests to fill out Guest Questionnaires. The Guest Questionnaire form is to be completed by your guests and put into a basket that will

be available to collect the forms. Remind guests that the questionnaires help us create a better experience for future Alpha courses.

End promptly Turn in the completed Host Feedback Form to the session leader.


Appendix: Helping Redirect Responses from guests—Other Examples.Over the course of the Alpha Course, situations may arise at the table that require additional attention. Below are some suggestions based on past experience that have been helpful for hosts and helpers. Several hosts and helpers have asked for phrases to use when redirecting potentially “difficult” table guests. Any time you have a concern, please feel free to discuss the issue with the Alpha team or your session leader.

Possible responses for “difficult” table guests: Always affirm the person without pronouncements or judgments on the content of

statements. Simple redirection toward the whole group is typically easy and useful. A host’s joyful and peaceful attitude is contagious and mitigates any negativism in the

group. Outright aggression toward others in the group should be very rare and is not acceptable.

Aggression toward the Church, however, may not be that rare, but this can be handled easily by redirection.

Possible general responses to statements from the guests: “Thank you for sharing that” / “That took a lot of courage to share that…” / “I never heard

that before ….” / “That was really powerful...”

General redirection: “Thank you, (Name), that is a wonderful observation you made/experience you had/feeling

you shared/thought you volunteered. What do the rest of you think about that?”

If a guest calls on others at the table: “(Name), thank you for your interest in everyone's opinion; that means a lot. However, on

the Alpha Course we refrain from calling on people for the very specific reasons we discussed on the first day. We don’t want people to feel like they are back in school. (Say this with a smile) We value everyone’s opinion and insights, but we have no rule that one has to share at all. These are deep and profound questions, and some people are more comfortable silently contemplating. That is acceptable.”

Someone is a proselytizer: “(Name), I am so happy that you feel so close to Jesus/so strongly about your faith, etc.

Not everyone has that friendship/strong faith, etc., and there may even be some here who doubt Jesus exists. Let’s remember that we are not here to argue but to share our thoughts without demanding that others feel or think as we do.”

Someone gets angry: “I am sorry you feel angry, (name). What can we do to help you?”

Someone gets sad:


“I am sorry you are sad/hurt/embarrassed, etc. I am very sorry if I made you feel this way. Please accept my apology. If you want to share what was said or done to make you feel this way, please let me know. If not, know that my intentions were not to make you feel this way. Please let me know if it happens again so we can address the situation immediately. I (we) want you to feel safe here.”

When the discussion goes off topic: Keying in on an emotion, word, or topic of the person or people who are off subject, gently

guide them back using the list of questions for the week. “That leads me to our next question…”

When the guests lead their answers to their children, grandchildren, or other family members, steer them back gently. It is fine to politely remind them that the discussion is about their faith journey.

Consider using the content to get back on track, i.e. "That's interesting...can anyone think of an example or illustration from the video that is similar or different to that idea"?

When the guests ask your opinion as the host in the early sessions: Ask the rest of the group what their thoughts are. Tell them “let’s see if we can figure it out

together,” then gently steer them to the answer if possible by asking other questions. If the question will be covered later, tell them you believe that answer will come in a later session. If necessary, answer briefly and simply, enough to keep the conversation moving.

When a guest wants everything to be done “Catholic”: Depending upon the topic, look ahead in the manual because many of the topics will be

covered as the course progresses. (Prayer, the Bible, the Holy Spirit) Explain that the Alpha Course is not about denominations, but about Jesus Christ. Courses

that delve into details of Catholicism are offered as follow-up after Alpha. Explain that the Alpha Course is being offered with the blessing of our pastor. Talk to the person privately about the aims, goals and process of Alpha. If this does not

workup with your session leader for further instruction.

Guests want more explanation or are concerned about the Holy Spirit Weekend: Encourage the guests to ask any questions they may have about the Holy Spirit Weekend.

The more information the guests have, the more likely it is they will feel at ease. Inform them of the elements of the Holy Spirit Weekend—the DVDs on the topic of the Holy Spirit, small group discussion, breakfast, lunch, and an opportunity to receive prayer from the Alpha prayer teams.

If your group wants to know more, explain what they might experience. Let them know that it is all up to God. It doesn’t mean everyone will have the same experience. Explain that if they want to get close to Him, encourage them to be open and trusting.

Allow the guests to see and feel your genuine love for God and your excitement about this opportunity for them. This goes a long way to encourage them and give them confidence.

Other Tips from Alpha USA: Potential Small Group Scenarios on AlphaOvercoming these challenging small group situations:


1. The dominant member: Try not to make eye contact with the person. Sit next to them rather than opposite. Politely interrupt the person with statements such as: “What do the rest of you

think?” “Let’s hear from some other people, too.” Look directly at and gesture toward the other guests. Talk to them privately about giving others a chance to share. Be affirming when talking with them.

2. The eager Christian who “shares” too much: Question their answers by saying: “That’s a great answer for a Christian, but what

would we say to someone who didn’t believe the Bible?” Clarify texts and language used. Express the fears/reactions other group members may be experiencing. Talk to them privately after the session (or by phone) and affirm their knowledge. Explain the Alpha philosophy and ask them to help draw people out.

3. The quiet member: Talk to them at meal times. Ask, “What do you hope to get out of the course?”

“What sorts of questions do you have?” “Are we meeting your expectations?” Make use of a comment or question they told you at supper and ask them for

permission to repeat it in the group discussion. Affirm them and their contributions. Show love and genuine interest in the person. Remember that sometimes quiet people are so used to being quiet that they just

accept it. If host asks their opinion, it may show that the group values their input. Accept people where they are at.

4. The quiet group: Be proactive;

Get them to write questions down. (Take home a question sheet) Have an icebreaker every week. Don’t be afraid of silence. Don’t fill silence with your voice then they’ll always stay quiet! Ask if your question makes sense (rephrase if necessary) Avoid right/wrong questions or “threatening” questions. Ask questions to which you don’t know the answer. Ask questions that allow or encourage “negative” responses:

o “What do you find the hardest about praying?” o “What is the thing you fear most about sharing your faith?”

5. The chaotic group:Remind the group it is best to have only one conversation going at a time.

Address topics that are raised, but don’t stay off the topic too long. Suggest some reading and come back to the subject over the next meal. Be aware of topics coming up later in the course.


Continue having fun, don’t clamp down on the group too much. Aim to ensure a degree of helpful discussion and information.

6. The person who concentrates on personal problems: Be interested, sympathize and listen to them, but after a while:

Steer the conversation back to the topic or toward others. Offer to meet, talk, or pray with them during the week Direct them to counseling or an appropriate small group. Don’t sit opposite them.

7. The person who becomes the group “project”: Deflect attention from the person to their question/issue. Rephrase if necessary. Find ways to affirm his/her contributions: don’t let them always get “corrected” or

“straightened out.” Direct questions to other people. Take the more enthusiastic Christians in the group aside and explain the situation

and the Alpha philosophy of no pressure.
