Dear Friends in Christ

A major theme of Epiphany is light The Christ child was discovered by the

magi via the light of a star When Jesus was baptized the heavens opened

Jesus himself is often referred to as the light of the world

The timing of this season is great At a time of year when we are in the dead

of winter it is good to be able to bask in the glow of epiphany light I am

thankful that our annual congregational meeting which was January 27 takes

place in the season of epiphany At every years meeting we discuss how we

bring the light of Christ to our members through word and sacrament and how

we bring the saving light of Jesus to others such as the hungry homeless and

those in need of hope

Epiphany is traditionally the season for house blessings I have done several

of these over the years and find them joyous occasions Even if you have been

in your house for years let me know if you would like a house blessings In this

simple but gospelshyoriented worship a single candle is carried through each

room of a house as a Bible verse is read and a prayer is offered in thanksgiving

for the particular use of that room A house blessing is a family and community

event in which friends and extended family are invited

A house blessing can be understood as a metaphor for the mission of the

church The church brings light to all corners of the world by bringing the

gospel of Christ and a word of blessing and connection to our neighbors and

neighborhoods

Light and hope shyshy our world sure needs these today The church is ready to be

a blessing to all households to all people by living the good news of Christ

Blessed season of epiphany blessed season of light

In Christ

Stewardship Message

Growing a Grateful and Generous Heart

When we give generously to God to help others God not only blesses the

recipient of the gifts but the giver as well ldquoGive and it will be given to you A

good measure pressed down shaken together and running over will be

poured into your lap For with the measure you use it will be measured to

yourdquo (Luke 638) For us to give generously we need to trust God and separate

ourselves from a possessive attitude with our money When we give and reach

out to others we experience the true joy of being a Christian Being generous

does something for our spirit We live fulfilled lives when we share with those in

need Our giving breaks the selfish attitude that holds many of us The gifts God

gives us as a result of our generosity are much greater than what we give him

God gives us some biblical principles that guide us in our giving

Give to God the First Portion ldquoHonor the Lord with your wealth with the

firstshyfruits of all your cropsrdquo (Proverbs 39)

Give Proportionately ldquoFor if the willingness is there the gift is acceptable

according to what one has not according to what he does not haverdquo (2

Corinthians 812)

Give Regularly ldquoOn the first day of every week each one of you should set

aside a sum of money in keeping with his income rdquo (1 Corinthians 162)

Give Thankfully ldquoAlways giving thanks to God the Father for everything in

the name of our Lord Jesus Christrdquo (Ephesians 520)

Give Cheerfully ldquoEach of you should give what you have decided in your

heart to give not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful

giverrdquo (2 Corinthians 97)

For all of you who have pledged giving for the year thank you

May God bless all

New Emergency Backshyup Generator

The outlay of money for a standshyby generator has been on the church councils

agenda for many years The council has prayerfully considered and

debated this muchshyneeded piece of equipment The generator was tested and

put online on Friday January 18 Thanks be to God the sump pumps in our

subshybasement are now permanently powered which in turn protect our new

boiler from the constant stream of water that trickles into the cellar The

council and property committee deliberated on this project because the

generator cost close to $8250 (total) which will be paid out of our savings

account Its not too late to help If youd like to help defray the cost of this

project and help reinvigorate the savings account please consider donating

Your generosity will help ensure the mission of the church

We welcome the witness of our brother Ted Kohlmann in this monthrsquos

newsletter It is my hope that you too will experience the depth of his faith in

his story

1 History as a Lutheran

Ted was baptized attended Sunday School and was confirmed right here at

Christ Newburgh a rare witness among us He experienced the service of his

parents as they participated in Church Council and the many and varied

services of the Church He was even known to be one of the ldquooldestrdquo acolytes

ever continuing to serve through his high school years

2 When did you first see God at work in your life

At first Ted claimed a gradual development given the consistent attendance

of Church and all the events provided for youth and as a young adult He had

always felt grateful to God for watching over him But in the course of

conversation Ted identified a serious experience with his health while serving

in the Navy Given Tedrsquos quarantined existence for a period of time due to

mumps and the great possibility of being severely impaired from this health

situation his reliance on Godrsquos presence and prayer saved his spiritual health

and eventually his physical health

As Ted reported throughout our conversation he was grateful to God daily

He spoke of being grateful for serving in the Navy and the work at Central

Hudson that always provided challenges and opportunities for prayer and

guidance from God And of course it goes without saying meeting that girl

across the street Laura now his wife of 39 years and their precious family

3 Where do you feel God is calling you to service or what do you

pray for this congregation

As we all know Ted served in many capacities in the church and currently

shares in the stewardship of our building and grounds along with others

deriving a special level of satisfaction in ldquogiving backrdquo Regarding our

congregation Ted immediately responded to this question with an affirmative

answer shy ldquoI pray we may all be united for the common good of our Church and

communityrdquo This is truly the heart of a faithful man and we Ted are grateful

for you

Blessings to each of you dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

those in need of hope
