Christ is still offering forgiveness and stretching...

Dear Friends, I hope that you don’t mind a bit of repetition, but I’d like to extend a reflection I offered at Mass last weekend. To do so I have to tell you what happened to me recently. I was speaking with an 8 year old girl about a phrase we use when we recite the Creed on Sundays. It’s a well-known sentence which says “He descended into hell.” The girl bluntly asked me: “Why do we say that? After humming and hawing for a bit I finally realized something. So, I said to her that Jesus is like a good friend who hangs in there with us even when things are at their worst. That’s what the phrase “descended into hell” means. Since hell is the worst place we can imagine, the phrase is telling us that Jesus is with us in our worst times. If he’s with us there, then he is with us no matter what. That’s what Easter makes possible. We all have dark moments someone suffers from cancer; another from the loss of a loved one; a third can’t handle an addiction, or depression, or an emotional breakdown. Where is Christ in these experiences? “He descended into hell” means that contrary to our feelings of abandonment, he is with us. He’s there not just because he once suffered. He’s there because he’s risen. His human life that once shared in human misery, now experiences what we’re going through in eternity. His place of strength now can be our source of strength and understanding. Another dark time we all go through is of our own making: the choices we make that inflict harm on others, our world, and on our own lives. This sinfulness plunges us into the hell of guilt. “He descended into hell” means that this darkness is NOT the whole story. As on the Cross, the risen Christ is still offering forgiveness and stretching out his hands in mercy, even to those who reject him. He died as he lived he was always there for sinners, to bring them mercy…and he continues to do so in eternity. The final way that Christ is with us in the hell of life is in our experience of compassion for those who are suffering, those close to us or those anywhere. That compassion is our contact with the power of the Risen One. It can motivate us in a variety of ways, from simply being there for them, to using our creativity, insight, and energy to actually work at making the world more just, less frightening, more peaceful and caring. How can he be there in these moments of despair and hopelessness? It depends on what we think the term “eternal life” in the Scriptures mean. I think we water down this kind of life when we conjure up an image of living endlessly. How boring! That’s NOT what the Bible means. Eternal life is God’s life. Christ told his friends on that Thursday: “I will come again…so that where I AM you also may be.” Where is he? He’s always offering us that life. Like a gift that keeps on giving, God’s life is God always giving himself to us right now, not in the past or the future simply. Instead, he’s always there for us. This means that we can access this Risen Lord anytime we want. Just go into a church where the Blessed Sacrament is because he is Really Present there on our behalf. Just kneel or sit with him as you would with a good friend and be with him as he is with you. You can do the same anywhere else too. It just takes a willingness to get out of our heads and be attentive to the moment where we are. This means that what we celebrate each Easter isn’t something that happened two thousand years ago only. It happens right NOW. The Risen One is present with us, to us, and always, mercifully, for us! Love, Fr. Joe

MEDITATION

Christ as a Gardener Andrew Hudgins

The boxwoods planted in the park spell LIVE.

I never noticed it until they died.

Before, the entwined green had smudged the word

unreadable. And when they take their own advice

again — come spring, come Easter — no one will know

a word is buried in the leaves. I love the way

that Mary thought her resurrected Lord

a gardener. It wasn’t just the broad-brimmed hat

and muddy robe that fooled her: he was that changed.

He looks across the unturned field, the riot

Of unscythed grass, the smattering of wildflowers.

Before he can stop himself, he’s on his knees.

He roots up stubborn weeds, pinches the suckers,

deciding order here — what lives, what dies,

and how. But it goes deeper even than that.

His hands burn and his bare feet smolder. He longs

To lie down inside the long, dew-moist furrows

and press his pierced side and his broken forehead

into the dirt. But he’s already done it —

passed through one death and out the other side.

He laughs. He kicks his bright spade in the earth

and turns it over. Spring flashes by, then harvest.

Beneath his feet, seeds dance into the air.

They rise, and he, not noticing, ascends

on midair steppingstones of dandelion,

of milkweed, thistle, cattail, and goldenrod.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Easter Sunday

“He went about doing good and healing all those

oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)

On this Easter Sunday, allow Jesus to fill your mind, body and soul. Pray for guidance on how to live your life, open your heart to those in need and give thanks to God for all that he has given you.

Eucharistic Adoration Friday, April 1st

12:00 pm – 6:00 pm Concluding with

Benediction at 6 pm Please volunteer to pray

one hour before our Lord. Sign-up sheet in the church vestibule.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

other. Similar to Cornerstone in that each week will feature some type of sharing. That may be a short witness

talk, or music or compelling videos.

The beauty of this group is that you don’t need to join or be a member of an organization. You can come once,

you can come sometimes, you can come every week there is no obligation.

We meet at 6am so as to not to interfere with your normal work day or whatever you do this day. We will get

you out by 7am. Coffee will be served so you can basically get up, get dressed and come on over. We are

really excited about this group and believe you will be too. So won’t you give it a try? If you are interested in

attending or need more information please contact me at my email address, [email protected]

Service… Impelled by the Spirit of Jesus, St. Anne’s strives to reach out to others. In works on behalf of justice, charity, and human

PASTORAL COUNCIL March 14, 2016 Meeting CONDENSED MINUTES

NEW members were welcomed: Joe Murray, Carolyn Kohler, & Joan Piela

The Parish Mission (March 7-9) received many positive reviews from participants! Fr. Paul provided a great perspective on God’s Mercy. Having child-care available was very much appreciated. Capital Campaign Update: Our Faith, Our Home, Our Promise is the ‘new’ name for our Capital Campaign.

We are presently in the ‘quiet’ phase; to date we have collected : $358,000. Before the campaign goes public in mid-April, our goal is to raise about $800,000. Our goal is to contact every single person in the parish, to help them all feel connected to this campaign and the future of our parish. Our current Online Giving program will enable contributions to be deducted monthly or semi-monthly, so writing checks would not be necessary.

Revisit Rebuilt: We continued our discussion from December… o It was decided that as of September, Coffee Sunday will increase once a month to every Sunday.

Organizations will be asked to commit as often as possible. A supervising coordinator and a committee will be needed to oversee these events.

o BOLD middle/HS is off to a great start with many children and youth participating in both fun and

service-based activities. Street Faire Update: Planning for this 3-day event is an ongoing, lengthy process. The biggest issue is getting

enough volunteers to staff the booths, games, and food. Several organizations have committed to staff particular booths, but more help is needed. All St. Anne School & Faith Formation families must commit to volunteering for 1 shift.

Pastoral Council’s next meeting is April 26, 2016

We are grateful to the 2,419 people who worshipped with us on Palm Sunday and generously contributed $17,379.50 in the offertory and $2,892.00 through Online Giving offertory,

which along with other fees and donations totaled $24,331.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it

regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
