Christ is King! Rev. Lowell D. Nelson
Christ the King Sunday
November 23, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.
November 24, 2019 at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.
OUR MISSION
To proclaim the love of Jesus Christ,
invite others to participate in our faith community,
and be a blessing to all in word and deed.
Jeremiah’s promise of the execution of “justice and righteousness in the land” finds
ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears
so utterly contradictory that the king should be crucified with the criminal. This victory
appears for all the world as ignominious defeat. Yet through the gate of death our Lord
opens the door to paradise.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Praise My Soul arr. Don Hustad
WELCOME, MINISTRY HIGHLIGHTS, and PRAYER CONCERNS
20/20 VISION: STEWARDSHIP
RECEPTION of NEW MEMBERS
THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM
P: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are united by a common faith in Jesus Christ.
The power at work in this community does not come from our own strength but from
God’s Spirit working in us. Claiming God’s promises, we remember again God’s
gracious love for us and recommit ourselves to joyful life together in Christ. Baptism
is a sign of God’s faithful covenant promises, under which we live as a congregation
each day. Let us remember now our baptism and be thankful.

OPENING HYMN Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven LBW 549
APOSTOLIC GREETING
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit, be with you all.
C: And also with you.
P: Trusting in the word of life given in baptism, the love of God poured into our hearts,
and the victory of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, we gather this day with faith,
confidence, and joy to worship in the name of (+) the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
4
OPENING INVOCATION
P: This is the day the Lord has made;
C: let us rejoice and be glad in it.
P: Come, almighty King, and help us your name to sing,
C: for you are a God of love.
P: Come, incarnate Word, and make known your wonders to our souls,
C: for you are a God of grace.
P: Come, Holy Comforter, and bear witness within every heart that we belong to
you,
C: for you are a God who creates fellowship.
P: Come, triune God, that we might love
C: and adore you all the days of our lives.
P: This is the day the Lord has made;
C: let us rejoice and be glad in it.
(Sunday) Grace Mark Hayes The Grace Notes
ORDER OF CONFESSION
P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God,
C: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have
sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by
what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have
not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in
your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
5
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives
us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his
authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the
name (+) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: O God, our true life, to serve you is freedom, and to know you is unending joy. We
worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory. Abide with
us, reign in us, and make this world into a fit habitation for your divine majesty,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 23:1-6
Today’s reading builds on the common ancient Near Eastern metaphor of the king as shepherd.
Judah’s unjust rulers have caused their people, their “flock,” to be scattered. Nevertheless, the Lord will raise up a new and righteous shepherd who will rule a restored Judah.
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God!
PSALM 46 READ RESPONSIVELY
P: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
C: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in
the depths of the sea;
6
P: though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
C: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most
High.
P: God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day.
C: The nations rage, and the kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth melts away.
P: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
C: Come now, regard the works of the LORD, what desolations God has brought up on the
earth;
P: behold the one who makes war to cease in all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the
spear, and burns the shields with fire.
C: “Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted
in the earth.”
P: The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
THE SECOND LESSON Colossians 1:11-20 An early Christian hymn praises the mystery of the political, personal, and mystical Christ, the one
who was present at creation and is eternally reigning with God.
L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God!

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE GOSPEL
7
READING OF THE GOSPEL Luke 23:33-43 Amid scoffing and slander from those who sarcastically call him Messiah and king, Jesus reveals that
to be Messiah and king is to give one’s life for others. Here he uses his power to welcome a despised sinner to paradise but puts his own death into God’s hands.
RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL

CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord,
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died,
and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
OFFERTORY Beautiful Savior Robert Hobby

OFFERTORY RESPONSE For the Fruit of All Creation
OFFERTORY PRAYER
P: Let us pray. Merciful Father,
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—ourselves, our
time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of
him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
PRAYERS
P: United with the saints of every time and place, let us pray for the church, those in
need, and all of God’s creation. (Following each petition)
P: Hear us, O God…
C: Your mercy is great.
P: Rejoicing in hope, we lift our prayers to you, most gracious Lord, trusting that you have received
them in your care.
