The old year has ('ome to a close. It was a good one and for whatever we accomplished we pause and, as Samuel

did, give thanks to God. "Samuel took a stone and set it between Mispeh and Shen and called it Ebenezer, saying

'llitherto the Lord has helprd us.' " L Samuel 7:12

The rfforts of many membt'rs of the board have bren superb; their successful leadership has carried us through

many trying times. They gave unsl'lfisldy of their time, wisdom and strength to help us spread the mission of healing

to thr glory of God.

The work of the dl'flicaterl and dl'votrd memhers of our administration, General Counsel, the Medical Staff, theWoman's Auxiliary, til(' Volunterrs, tht' School of Nursing, the Nursrs' Alumnae Assoeiation, employees and all others

hal' IIrrn an inspiration to all who entn our doors of Christian hl'aling.

I express my pnsonal thanks and de/'p gratitudl' to the aforenll'ntion('d groups. Without your support and rn

couraw'nl('nt the mission of Christian healing might not have been accomplished during 1«)71.

Looking ahead to the new year, we ask, "What dOl'S God want us to do'!" We look to th(> Bible for the answer:

"Study to show thysl'lf approved unto God, a workman that nl'edth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the work of

truth." II Timothy 2: 15

"Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, he strong. Let all things be done with charity." Corinthians

One of the major highlights of the past year was the gala 10-year anniversary celebration. The Association's Hoardof Directors treated more than 1,350 hospital employees and their guests to dinner-dances March 29 and 30. Theprogram included remarks by local dignitaries, service award pins to employees and the introduction of Patricia Smith, first child born at our hospital.

A giant step forward was taken in July when thl:' Association entered our hospital into an affiliation with Presbyterian-SL. Luke's Medical Center and Rush Medical College.

Conceptually, the Hush Commitment provides for the establishment of a Network of J0 hospitals geographicallylocated in the inner city, the suburban and the rural areas which can deliver total health care to 1.5 million residcnL~

in the Chicago metropolitan area. Philosophically, it embraces three goals: Improved health care delivery, educationfor health-care proft'ssionals and discovery through responsible research programs.

Because of our strong General Practice Section, we were urged to develop a Family Practice Residency Program. Our Board has allocated one floor of thc proposed addition for the development of these special facilities. The projection is that we will have 24 Family Practice Residents in a three-year program that will graduate eight doctors ayear.

Dr. Thomas lIejna was appoin ted coordinator of the ({ush program.A 1I0spitai Gmergency Command System was installed in two elevators to assist in cardiac arrest service and to

provide elevator control for fire and other critical conditions. The first of its kind in the Midwest and the fourth inoperation in the United States, the "dial-an-elevator" system alerts passengers to exit at the nearest floor to makeway for the "crash cart" equipment and emergency personnel.

The architects are developing working drawings of the proposed expansion of Christ Community Hospital. Theprogram as now stated will incorporate ancillary facilities, an out-patient area, a medical arts section and 200 additional beds. Preparatory to the expansion program a new south parking lot with room for more than 250 cars wasbuilL. Also added was a gas incinerator designed to handle refuse in the cleanest, safest way possible.
