Transcript of Christ Church Cathedral Nelson · 2017-10-27 · Anthem Ubi Caritas – Ola Gjeilo b.1978 Prayers...
Dear Cathedralites Patsy and I were biking the superb coastal route from Motueka to Kaiteriteri last Monday and as we were cycling along I asked her one of my fa-vourite questions What were we doing this time last year I can never remem-ber but she can ldquoWellrdquo she said We were actually at an interview in the Bishoprsquos Office for the job of Dean of Nelson I remember the interview well Twelve months later and here we are embark-ing on a four week series entitled ldquoGrowing the Cathedralrdquo One of the first requests I made upon being appointed Dean was to ask the then treasurer Russell Smith to pro-duce graphs of the Cathedral attend-ance and giving during the past ten years It was sobering to look at both graphs that went downwards Had these graphs been of a school a business or a sports club then there would have been some very serious questions and meetings So the perti-nent question to ask is not ldquowill we changerdquo thatrsquos a given but ldquowill we be
prepared to pay the cost of changerdquo Thatrsquos the biggy You see if you keep on doing what we have always done we will always get what we always got When Bishop Richard appointed me as your Dean he did not have in mind for me to let those graphs continue in the same A few months ago I met with other Deans who said ldquoBeing Dean of a Cathedral is a fantastically easy job if all you want to do is to enjoy the bau-bles of Office wear the robes enjoy be-ing the Very Reverend meeting with Mayors Members of Parliament being invited to preside at special services all things I love doing But for me to be passive and ignore those graphs without doing anything about it would be to rob God rob the Cathedral and rob myself This I can-not do in all conscience easy though it would be So the next four weeks will be definitive in terms of the next five years (God will-ing that I will be here as your Dean) Please note that there will be two op-portunities each week for us to engage in discussions about all of this I am

Readings 8am amp 10am Deuteronomy 34 1-12
Moses Dies and Is Buried in the Land
of Moab
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo to the top of Pisgah which is opposite Jericho and the LORD showed him the whole land Gilead as far as Dan all Naphtali the land of Ephraim and Manasseh all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea the Negeb and the Plainmdashthat is the valley of Jericho the city of palm treesmdashas far as Zoar The LORD said to him lsquoThis is the land of which I swore to Abraham to Isaac and to Ja-cob saying ldquoI will give it to your descend-antsrdquo I have let you see it with your eyes but you shall not cross over therersquo Then Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab at the LORDrsquos com-mand He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor but no one knows his burial place to this day Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died his sight was un-impaired and his vigour had not abated The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days then the period of mourning for Moses was ended Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him and the Israelites obeyed him doing as the LORD had com-manded Moses Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses whom the LORD knew face to face He was unequalled for all the signs and won-ders that the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying
displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel
Psalm 90 vv 1-6 13-17 Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to another Before the mountains were born or the earth and the world were brought to be from eternity to eternity you are God You turn man back into dust saying lsquoReturn to dust you sons of Adamrsquo For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday passing or like one watch of the night You cut them short like a dream like the fresh grass of the morning In the morning it is green and flourishes at evening it is withered and dried up
Relent O Lord how long will you be
angry take pity on your servants
O satisfy us early with your mercy
that all our days we may rejoice and sing
Give us joy for all the days you have
afflicted us
for the years we have suffered adversity
Show your servants your work
and let their children see your glory
May the gracious favour of the Lord our
God be upon us
prosper the work of our hands
O prosper the work of our hands
1 Thessalonians 2 1-8
Paulrsquos Ministry in Thessalonica
You yourselves know brothers and sisters that our coming to you was not in vain but though we had al-ready suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi as you know we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition For our appeal does
Page 11
not spring from deceit or impure mo-tives or trickery but just as we have been approved by God to be en-trusted with the message of the gos-pel even so we speak not to please mortals but to please God who tests our hearts As you know and as God is our witness we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed nor did we seek praise from mortals whether from you or from others though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ But we were gentle among you like a nurse tenderly caring for her own chil-dren So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves because you have become very dear to us
St Matthew 22 34-40
The Greatest Commandment 34 When the Pharisees heard that he
had silenced the Sadducees they gathered together 35 and one of them a lawyer asked him a ques-tion to test him 36 lsquoTeacher which commandment in the law is the greatestrsquo 37 He said to him lsquoldquoYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mindrdquo 38 This is the greatest and first com-mandment 39 And a second is like it ldquoYou shall love your neighbour as yourselfrdquo 40 On these two command-ments hang all the law and the prophetsrsquo
530pm Psalm 119 vv 89-104 In aeternum Domine
O LORD thy word endureth for ever in heaven 90 Thy truth also remaineth from one generation to anotherthou hast laid the foundation of the earth and it abideth 91 They continue this day according to thine ordinance for all things serve thee 92 If my delight had not been in thy law I should have perished in my trouble 93 I will never forget thy commandments for with them thou hast quickened me 94 I am thine O save me for I have sought thy commandments 95 The ungodly laid wait for me to de-stroy me but I will consider thy testimo-nies 96 I see that all things come to an end but thy commandment is exceeding broad Quomodo dilexi LORD what love have I unto thy law all the day long is my study in it 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies for they are ever with me 99 I have more understanding than my teachers for thy testimonies are my study 100 I am wiser than the aged because I keep thy commandments 101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way that I may keep thy word 102 I have not shrunk from thy judge-ments for thou teachest me 103 O how sweet are thy words unto my throat yea sweeter than honey unto my mouth 104 Through thy commandments I get understanding therefore I hate all evil ways

The Value of Diligence
Send out your bread upon the wa-
ters for after many days you will get it
back Divide your means seven ways
or even eight for you do not know what
disaster may happen on earth
When clouds are full they empty rain
on the earth whether a tree falls to the
south or to the north
in the place where the tree falls there it
will lie Whoever observes the wind will
not sow and whoever regards the
clouds will not reap Just as you do not
know how the breath comes to the
bones in the motherrsquos womb so you do
not know the work of God who makes
everything In the morning sow your
seed and at evening do not let your
hands be idle for you do not know
which will prosper this or that or
whether both alike will be good Light is
sweet and it is pleasant for the eyes to
see the sun Even those who live for
many years should rejoice in them all
yet let them remember that the days of
darkness will be many All that comes is
vanity Rejoice young man while you
are young and let your heart cheer you
in the days of your youth Follow the in-
clination of your heart and the desire of
your eyes but know that for all these
things God will bring you into judge-
ment Banish anxiety from your mind
and put away pain from your body for
youth and the dawn of life are vanity
2 Timothy 2 1-7
A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus
You then my child be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus No one serving in the army gets entangled in eve-ryday affairs the soldierrsquos aim is to please the enlisting officer And in the case of an athlete no one is crowned without compet-ing according to the rules It is the farmer who does the work who ought to have the first share of the crops Think over what I say for the Lord will give you understand-ing in all things

O prosper the work of our hands

not spring from deceit or impure mo-tives or trickery but just as we have been approved by God to be en-trusted with the message of the gos-pel even so we speak not to please mortals but to please God who tests our hearts As you know and as God is our witness we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed nor did we seek praise from mortals whether from you or from others though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ But we were gentle among you like a nurse tenderly caring for her own chil-dren So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves because you have become very dear to us

Paulrsquos Ministry in Thessalonica

The Value of Diligence
Send out your bread upon the wa-
ters for after many days you will get it
back Divide your means seven ways
or even eight for you do not know what
disaster may happen on earth
When clouds are full they empty rain
on the earth whether a tree falls to the
south or to the north
in the place where the tree falls there it
will lie Whoever observes the wind will
not sow and whoever regards the
clouds will not reap Just as you do not
know how the breath comes to the
bones in the motherrsquos womb so you do
not know the work of God who makes
everything In the morning sow your
seed and at evening do not let your
hands be idle for you do not know
which will prosper this or that or
whether both alike will be good Light is
sweet and it is pleasant for the eyes to
see the sun Even those who live for
many years should rejoice in them all
yet let them remember that the days of
darkness will be many All that comes is
vanity Rejoice young man while you
are young and let your heart cheer you
in the days of your youth Follow the in-
clination of your heart and the desire of
your eyes but know that for all these
things God will bring you into judge-
ment Banish anxiety from your mind
and put away pain from your body for
youth and the dawn of life are vanity

The Value of Diligence
Send out your bread upon the wa-
ters for after many days you will get it
back Divide your means seven ways
or even eight for you do not know what
disaster may happen on earth
When clouds are full they empty rain
on the earth whether a tree falls to the
south or to the north
in the place where the tree falls there it
will lie Whoever observes the wind will
not sow and whoever regards the
clouds will not reap Just as you do not
know how the breath comes to the
bones in the motherrsquos womb so you do
not know the work of God who makes
everything In the morning sow your
seed and at evening do not let your
hands be idle for you do not know
which will prosper this or that or
whether both alike will be good Light is
sweet and it is pleasant for the eyes to
see the sun Even those who live for
many years should rejoice in them all
yet let them remember that the days of
darkness will be many All that comes is
vanity Rejoice young man while you
are young and let your heart cheer you
in the days of your youth Follow the in-
clination of your heart and the desire of
your eyes but know that for all these
things God will bring you into judge-
ment Banish anxiety from your mind
and put away pain from your body for
youth and the dawn of life are vanity

You yourselves know brothers and sisters that our coming to you was not in vain but though we had al-ready suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi as you know we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition For our appeal does

not spring from deceit or impure mo-tives or trickery but just as we have been approved by God to be en-trusted with the message of the gos-pel even so we speak not to please mortals but to please God who tests our hearts As you know and as God is our witness we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed nor did we seek praise from mortals whether from you or from others though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ But we were gentle among you like a nurse tenderly caring for her own chil-dren So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves because you have become very dear to us
St Matthew 22 34-40
