About the MusicEstonian composer Arvo Pärt was commissioned to write Annum per Annum, or Year by Year to celebrate the 900th year in which daily masses were given at the Speier Cathedral, Germany. The work was dedicated to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, with the five movements based on the ordinary of the mass: K-G-C-S-A: Kyrie-Gloria-Credo-Sanctus-Agnus Dei. Pärt uses minimalism, which in music is the use and/or repetition of a single idea, motive, note(s), or rhythmic pattern throughout the work. The piece opens and closes with the same treatment of the short-long rhythmic pattern. It begins with full organ, dissipating to complete silence by turning the blower motor off while holding the chord. The piece concludes creating the opposite effect by gradually adding stops until the same full organ from the opening is reached.

About the PerformerCanon Dr. Robert L. Bozeman is Cathedral Musician at Christ Church Cathedral, Louisville, KY and Artistic Director of Cathedral Arts. Dr. Bozeman is a Bones for Life® teacher and creator of “Better Movement: Better Music,” working with musicians in the area of somatic education (learning through the body), assisting his students to move in ways that make their goals achievable, with ease.Canon Bozeman earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree (DMA) in organ performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. There, he was a teaching assistant, studying organ with Roberta Gary and harpsichord with Vivian Montgomery. His research topic “Gesture, Movement, and the Keyboard Performer” received a grant from the University of Cincinnati Graduate Research Council, funding research of the project and the subsequent video related to the project. Other grants for his work have been funded by the Tangeman Sacred Music Center (Cincinnati) and the Christ Church Cathedral (Indianapolis) Episcopal Church Women. He has also presented lectures on topics of worship in the 21st century to the School of Theology at Sewanee, and to several chapters of the American Guild of Organists.He directed and produced “An American Evening,” a CD recording of music by American composers which was featured on the national radio program “With Heart and Voice.” A second choral recording “Lux Aeterna: Eternal Light,” was featured on Louisville’s Classical 90.5. Additionally, Robert has performed with Trio Novi, a Louisville based piano trio, during Noontime Classics, a live broadcast sponsored by WUOL.He received the Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Conservatory of Music, studying with John Ditto, and the Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Oklahoma. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. With this in mind, our worship reflects the contemplative nature of evening worship through Evensong to the joyous celebrations of the nativity and resurrection.

The Cathedral Choiris the resident choral ensemble at the Cathedral, singing all principal services. The choir also sings services for the Diocese of Kentucky, monthly Evensongs, and the annual Service of Lessons and Carols. A mixed choir of adults, the choir sings music from all eras, while focusing approximately fifty percent of their repertoire to music by American composers. The Cathedral Choir and Canon Bozeman have been featured on both local and national public radio programs numerous times. Recordings available by the Cathedral Choir include An American Evening: Music by American Composers and Lux Aeterna-Music spanning a thousand years with the common theme of light. You may purchase copies following evensong in the narthex or through the Cathedral website.
