Christ Church Cathedral
Annual Report for 2014
Presented at the Parish Meeting held on January 25, 2015
2
Dean’s Report
2014 was a year of transition, but it was also a year of ministry—made possible through
Christ Church Cathedral’s faithful stewardship of time, talent and treasure. We were able
to reach out to many in need.
During the year, we grieved with those who lost loved ones and commended those who
died to God's eternal care. Those buried from Christ Church Cathedral were Betty Jones,
Gwynne Goldberg, Virginia Durrett, Susan Herlin, Pauline Lonsways, and John
Shackleton, Sr.
Among the celebrations of life were the baptisms of Mayme Isabelle Ballard, Gabriael
Durnil, Braden Wheatley, and Courtney Wheatley
The following were presented to the bishop for confirmation into the Episcopal Church:
Bennett Eng and Walter Radeker V
Those married at the Cathedral were Tom Hunter and Jerry Tschiegg
During 2014, with the help of many, able parish leaders, we continued to explore our
three core ministries of Prayer, Study and Work—giving attention also to the support
ministries of Listening and Building. (check out more about this good work below in the
inventory of ministry for this past year). There have been new initiatives in all areas:
Midday Mass on weekdays, Weekday Bible Study, DEO (Downtown Episcopal
Outreach, to meet gap needs in our community), Sacred Conversation, and expanded
communications.
Join me in thanking the Chapter which has ably led us: Dr. Mike Foster (Sr. Warden),
Paula Hale, Frazier Marsh, the Rev’d Fr. Moray Peoples, Tom Peters, Sue Radeker, Jan
Scholtz, Bill Shelton, Sue Speed, Keith Stevenson (Jr. Warden), Susan Torok, Diane
Watts-Roy, John Werst, the Rev’d Fr. Jim Wilkinson, Kay Wilkinson,
I am grateful for Christ Church Cathedral’s hard-working, creative Staff: Dr. Robert
Bozeman, Canon Musician, Zachary Cavan, Parish Administrator and Sexton and Tom
Thill, Sacristan. In addition, Kay Wilkinson serves us as Bookkeeper.
Why do we pray, study, work, listen and build?
Benedict, the father of Benedictine spirituality, suggested that our life is best balanced
withprayer, study, and work. We have taken that challenge as the basis of our common
life together at the Cathedral—they are our 3 core ministries. We also know that we are
sustained by our life together, and that works best when we listen to one another. We
also aim to build and maintain a structure that will support our ministry efforts.
Therefore:
3
We PRAY (worship and the arts)
We STUDY (spiritual formation)
We WORK (service to others)
We LISTEN (cathedral life)
We BUILD (administration)

Senior Warden’s Report
As I reflect on the past year in preparation for this exercise, I am mindful of the great
service and grand accomplishments on behalf of our beloved Cathedral by those who
have held this position down the years. I am humbled as I consider the debt that we who
are the Cathedral parish of today owe them, and I offer up a prayer of thanksgiving for
both their vision and their faithful service. People of God whom they were, I can only
hope that they would be charitable in considering the service of this latter day member of
the guild. I have done my best, according to the lights given me, and that is all I have to
say about that.
It has been a privilege beyond measure to serve under the inspired leadership of our
Dean in the Interim, Joan. Her presence among us and her sure hand in guiding us are
blessings for which I give thanks every day. Her gifts for liturgy and for preaching have
enlivened our worship and energized us as we strive to become the church that God
intends for us to be here in downtown Louisville and in the world at large. Her pastoral
gifts have helped to start the process of healing old wounds and mending old tears in the
fabric of the Cathedral community. And, finally, she has systematically, patiently, and
indefatigably called us to become what a Cathedral should be: the church for the diocese
where worship is conducted throughout the week, not just on Sunday, where scripture is
studied in community, where stands are taken on significant issues, and where a helping
hand is offered to the people around us.
It has been an equal privilege to serve with your Junior Warden, Keith Stephenson. At
this writing I have not read his report, but I will bet the rent money that it does not begin
to do justice to the range and depth of his contributions to every facet of the life of the
parish. I see the imprint of his hand everywhere I look. However, he is certainly not
alone in his service to the Cathedral. My turn as Senior Warden has given me the
opportunity to become aware of how much so many of our community members have
done and continue to do within our parish community and in the broader community of
Louisville, and I continue learn new and wonderful things about our parishioners.
There is no question that this has been a year that has brought our Cathedral family both
grievous losses and encouraging growth. Through every challenge and every decision,
your Chapter has served you faithfully and well. Each and every member has been true
to the trust that you placed in them when you elected them. Please thank them for their
willingness to serve and for the service that they rendered.
The Lord Himself knows that I could not even dream of touching Dean Joan’s tour de
force sermon on 1 Epiphany, but as I think about the year ahead I can’t help but call to
mind that wonderful, old Carter family hymn, “Keep On the Sunny Side”:
Let us greet with a song of hope each day,
Though the morning be cloudy or fair.
Let us trust in our Savior always,
Who keepeth everyone in his care.
--Mike Foster

Junior Warden’s Report
It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to serve as your Junior Warden this year. I
have learned much while serving alongside our Senior Warden, Dr. Michael Foster, our
Dean in the Interim, the Very Reverend Dr. Joan Pritcher, and the other members of the
Chapter. I have enjoyed getting to know you, the members of the congregation better, and
hope that I have been able to adequately convey your feedback and requests to the
Chapter.
2014 saw the creation of our new membership directory. I was pleased to play a small
role in its creation and ongoing maintenance. I also assisted with the logistics behind All
Call Louisville and the Brueggemann/Block lecture this past November. Most of my
activities have been "behind the scenes" in nature as I work on taking care of the small
details that facilitate worship and mission at the Cathedral.
Lastly, I also wish to thank everyone who has contributed to our worship and mission
over the past year. It is through your efforts that we transform our historic structure into a
church.
--Keith Stevenson
Music Program
The membership of the Cathedral Choir remains strong at 24 members. Several new
choristers were welcomed in 2014: Christina Hatfield, soprano, Nick Covault and Kevin
Gilman, tenors, and Matt Wetmore, bass.
"Lux Aeterna" a live CD recording from February 2013 was released in December.
Copies are still available. On December 14, the Cathedral Choir combined with the
Chamber Choir from Pleasure Ridge Park High School for our annual Lessons and Carols
service. The Cathedral was filled with hundred of visitors and the program was inspiring.
A clip of the African piece "Betelehemu" is available on our facebook page and website.
Our Choir fundraiser continues this year on Tuesday, February 17 with out Mardi Gras
dinner followed by audience participation singing and fun.
We continue concerts and evesongs the second Sunday of each month eight months of the
year. In 2014 we performed and led evensong at Holy Trinity in Brandenburg and Christ
Church in Elizabethtown. The choir had a wonder three day retreat at All Saints
conference center at the end of September which both fed us as a community and allowed
us for long, long, long sessions of rehearsal.
Our next Evensong is February 8, 5:00 PM with music about light during this time of
Epiphany. Trio Novi will perform the concert with the Cathedral Choir singing evening
and featuring one of our favorite anthems from our first CD, Sure on this Shining Night.
9
The season concludes with "March Massness" on Sunday March 8, 5PM. In April, the
choir joins the Calvary Choir in singing Evensong on April 26 at 5PM.
In May, June and again in November, the choir was featured on the NPR program "With
Heart and Voice." In December, Canon Robert was interviewed and portions of the new
CD were played on Classical 90.5. You can hear the interview at WUOL.ORG.

Sunday Morning Bible Study
The Sunday Morning Bible Study met regularly throughout the year as we continued to
work our way through the Bible. We finished the Old Testament a number of years ago,
and are now working our way through the New Testament. We are currently in Chapter
9 of the Gospel of Luke, and will probably remain in Luke until the end of the year.
Once Luke is completed we will turn to the Book of Acts, and then move on to the rest of
the New Testament in approximately chronological order.
In the last year we’ve added several new members, and have welcomed a number of
guests. This group is both a way for visitors to connect with the life of the Cathedral, and
for Cathedral members to deepen their understanding of scripture. As always, the
members of the group continue to amaze me with their willingness to wrestle with the
Biblical text, and their insights into how the text makes a claim on our lives.
I welcome all of you to visit and partake of the discussion. Each session stands on its
own, and no familiarity with Biblical languages or history is assumed. The Gospels are
so rich in detail that it usually takes a number of sessions to cover a chapter. If you’ve
never studied the Bible before, this is a great way to start. And if you’re already a master
at Bible Study, we’d love to hear your perspective. We meet at 9:00 each Sunday
morning in the Library. Please join us!
--Tom Peters, Leader, Sunday Morning Bible Study
Cathedral Life
The Cathedral Life team has been active this year. We have hosted receptions for
Evensongs, Easter, funerals, ordinations and coffee hours. We provided lunch for the
annual meeting, Holy Week lunches, hosted the Agape Supper, had a parish picnic to
start off the “season” in September and brought back the Book Exchange. Page Curry
has coordinated the coffee hours after the 10:00 services and we can always use
additional help with providing refreshments for the coffee hours!!! The Community
Breakfasts on the first Sunday of the month continue to thrive and this year youth of the
Diocese sponsored a special Christmas Community Breakfast on the Sunday before
Christmas which was a great success with at least 70 people attending. This year the
Dean in the Interim sponsored a Work Day where many of us cleaned inside and out and
a schedule was set up for work during the year. A Cathedral book group began meeting
to the delight of many.
10
The number of people who help with these endeavors has grown and this congregation
responds mightily when asked to help, which is often.
Our goal is to organize our efforts so that we are not calling on the same people all the
time to provide the hospitality for which we are well-known; with the size of our
congregation, this is a challenge. We strive to enliven the congregate life of our
Cathedral congregation and welcome ideas for future activities or initiatives.
--Randy Peters

Keith Stevenson discussed the sound system tuning that our sound consultant, Daniel,
recently did. To address some hearing/clarity/sound issues, the Chapter discussed
offering additional training to lay readers about how to best project their voices while
reading.
Dean Pritcher noted that we have a wedding coming up at the Cathedral. The mother of
the bride would like an audio tape of the wedding. Our current system does not do this.
Daniel has identified some needed changes to the sound system. Keith is also working to
identify what needs to happen to provide a clean audio output with the current system.
Dean Pritcher will ask Robert to have Daniel put together a list of updates we need to
improve the sound system.
Michael Foster discussed getting the new Kroger cards up and running and asked the
Chapter to kick it off by doing it in advance. Keith Stevenson and others will bring
laptops to church during coffee hour on October 5th
so people needing help can get
registered.
Treasurer’s Report – Reverend Moray Peoples reported that the audit has been done and
completed and in good order. Reverend Peoples will ask the endowment to give us our
third quarter distribution. Then we will get the fourth installment in early December. On
the expense side, we are still two months behind on the Diocene assessment. We have
some utility issues. There might be a leak and John Werst is helping to get this
straightened out. We also have a big LG&E bill.

insurance option that may help to save the church money.
Reverend Pritcher noted that Christ Church is helping to host Fall Forums through the
Festival of Faith event during November 12 – 13th

Dean Pritcher noted that on October 8, 9, 10, 11 the Diocese is offering a special event
led by Rob Voyles. He specializes in a process called Appreciative Inquiry. This involves
addressing problems by looking at strengths rather than weaknesses. It is an open event
and more information will be provided in next week’s Cathedral Matters. He will be here
three days. Participation is highly encouraged.
Kay Shields-Wilkinson read a friendly letter of introduction from the new owners of the
Howard Hardy House to the church community.
14
Dean Pritcher discussed budget adjustments planned – and asked the Chapter for ways
we can trim our budget. John Werst mentioned that we might eliminate our garden
irrigation system. It may be creating expenses. The Finance Committee will be helping us
with this a lot too.
We have a new proposed rate schedule that the Finance Committee is considering. We
may switch but are still considering this issue as a way to save money along with other
options.
The date of our annual meeting will tentatively be held on Sunday, January 25th,
2015.
Sacred Conversations will be held on October 12, 19, 26. Unless you are out of town,
Dean Pritcher asks for your attendance. The story themes are the: Thankful Leper,
Widow’s Might, and Stand Up. Each time there will be a story and two guiding
questions. Dean Pritcher asked all Chapter members to have our 2015 pledges in by
November 2nd.

Werst volunteered to attend. It is $135 per Deputee.
Reverend Moray Peoples resigned as the Vicar at Brandenburg effective October 12,
2014.
On November 16th during the Sunday morning service the union of Tom Hunter and
Jerry Tschiegg will take place. Dean Pritcher will create some articles to explain what we
are doing.
