Forty days and forty nights of pounding rain, destruction and an overcrowded ark. Then, a rainbow fi l ls the sky. And Noah was grateful. Forty years of wandering through a hot and arid desert. Then, as promised, a land flowing wi th mi lk and honey is on the horizon. And the people of Israel were grateful. Forty days is spent by Jesus in a frightening wi lderness tormented by the devi l?s temptations. Not giving in, Jesus ult imately claims victory over sin and death by his resurrection. Li fe wins! And we are so grateful.

In Scripture, the number forty is about journey, transformation and grati tude. And that?s what the number forty is about for me today. A most powerful journey that began on June 3, 1978, the day I was ordained a priest. For forty years my l i fe has been transformed by your l ives and the l ives of those I have served. For this I am profoundly grateful.

Forty years that have fi l led me wi th more blessings than any human being has a right to. Forty years that have led me to say thank you right after I wake up every morning. For forty years I have seen humani ty?s goodness win out over the many attempts to destroy i t by sin and by l i fe?s painful and tragic events. For forty years I have been invi ted into your l ives and the l ives of others at the tenderest moments of despair, hurt, gui l t and grief. I have also been invi ted to celebrate your most jubi lant moments of commitment, new l i fe, successes and miracles.

This is the l i fe of a priest. At least, this priest. Cal led to stand in the midst of the pains and struggles, the joy and gladness that is the human condi t ion and reassure you that you are loved uncondi t ional ly by God. And to be reassured by you, that I, too, am loved uncondi t ional ly by God.

The priesthood has given me access to some sacred instruments to help bring that uncondi t ional love of God to the Church and the world. The Word of God and the privi lege of preaching that Word in hopes that our l ives wi l l be touched by i ts power and hope. The sacraments, wi th thei r tangible, touchable signs of cleansing, heal ing, forgiving, nourishment and commitment. And at the heart of i t al l , presiding at the sacred banquet of the Eucharist, making Jesus the Bread of Li fe present as food for the journey, yours and mine.

As I celebrate these forty years, in the spi ri t of my fami ly?s love of basebal l , I offer these words di rectly from today?s Scriptures that I hope wi l l be for us a k ind of holy coaching for our l ives in the days, months and years ahead. This is what I ask of you, only this: That you act justly, love tenderly, walk humbly wi th your God, dedicate your selves to thankfulness and give as a gi ft what you have been given as a gi ft .

I am so grateful to you, my bishop, brother priests, deacons, fami ly, fr iends, co-workers and parishioners for the precious gi ft you have been and are to me. It is so wonderful to be on this journey of transformation and grati tude wi th you .

Chr ist Cat hedr al Par ish: Diocesan Chil dr en's Choir Summer Camp The thi rd annual Diocesan Chi ldren's Choir Camp is now accepting registrat ion for i ts summer program. The morning camp wi l l be held June 25-29 on the Christ Cathedral Campus in Garden Grove. Under the di rection of Christ Cathedral Music Director Dr. John Romeri , students wi l l develop choral singing, musical sk i l ls and l i turgical knowledge. What is RCIA and who is it f or ? The Ri te of Christ ian Ini t iat ion of Adults (RCIA) is a process whereby new members join the Cathol ic Church, designed speci fical ly for the fol lowing:

1. For adults who have never been baptized and who want to inqui re about the Cathol ic fai th. 2. For adults who have been baptized into another Christ ian tradi t ion (Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, etc.)

Cuarenta días y cuarenta noches de l luvias fuertes, destrucción y un arca l lena. Entonces, un arco i ris l lena el cielo. Y Noé estaba agradecido. Cuarenta años de caminando por un desierto caluroso y árido. Entonces, como se prometió, una t ierra que fluye con leche y miel se ve en el horizonte. Y el pueblo de Israel estaba agradecido. Cuarenta días pasa Jesús en un desierto aterrador atormentado con las tentaciones del diablo. Él no se da por vencido, el ul t imadamente, reclama la victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte por su resurrección. ¡La vida gana! Y estamos muy agradecidos.

En la Escri tura, el número cuarenta signi fica el viaje, la transformación y la grati tud. Y eso es lo que el número cuarenta es para mí hoy. Un viaje muy poderoso que comenzó el 3 de junio de 1978, el día en que fui ordenado sacerdote. Durante cuarenta años mi vida ha sido transformada por sus vidas y por las vidas de aquel los a quienes he servido. Por esto estoy profundamente agradecido.

Cuarenta años que me han l lenado de más bendiciones que cualquier ser humano t iene derecho a tener. Cuarenta años que me han l levado a dar las gracias justo después de despertar cada mañana. Durante cuarenta años he visto ganar la bondad de la humanidad a través de los muchos intentos de destrui rla por el pecado y por los acontecimientos dolorosos y trágicos de la vida. Durante cuarenta años he sido invi tado a sus vidas y a las vidas de otros en los momentos más t iernos de desesperación, dolor, culpa y dolor. También he sido invi tado a celebrar tus momentos más jubi losos de compromiso, nueva vida, éxi tos y mi lagros.

Esta es la vida de un sacerdote. Al menos, de este sacerdote. Llamado a estar en medio de los dolores y las luchas, la alegría y el regoci jo que es la condición humana y asegurarles que son amados incondicionalmente por Dios. Y ser reasegurado por ustedes, que yo también soy amado por Dios incondicionalmente.

El sacerdocio me ha dado acceso a algunos instrumentos sagrados para ayudar a traer ese amor incondicional de Dios a la Iglesia y al mundo. La Palabra de Dios y el privi legio de predicar esa Palabra con la esperanza de que nuestras vidas sean tocadas por su poder y esperanza. Los sacramentos, con sus signos palpables, sus toques de l impieza, curación, perdón, al imentación y compromiso. Y en el corazón de todo esto, presidiendo el sagrado banquete de la Eucaristía, haciendo de Jesús el Pan de Vida presente como al imento para el viaje, el suyo y el mío.

Mientras celebro estos cuarenta años, en el espíri tu del amor de mi fami l ia por el béisbol, ofrezco estas palabras di rectamente de las Escri turas de hoy que espero que sean para nosotros una especie de un santo entrenamiento para nuestras vidas en los días, meses y años por veni r. Esto es lo que pido de ustedes, sólo esto: Que actúen justamente, que amen t iernamente, caminen humi ldemente con tu Dios, que se dediquen en grati tud y que den como regalo lo que se les ha dado como regalo.

Estoy muy agradecido con ustedes, mi obispo, hermanos sacerdotes, diáconos, fami l ia, amigos, compañeros de trabajo y fel igreses por el precioso regalo que han sido y son para mí. Es muy maravi l loso estar en este viaje de transformación y grati tud con ustedes.

¿Qué es RICA y par a quién es? El Ri to de Iniciación Crist iana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso en donde nuevos miembros se unen a la Iglesia Catól ica, diseñado específicamente para lo siguiente:
