(1) IHEEM & the Healthcare Sector

y Founded in 1943 IHEEM is the lead professional body representing estates in the healthcare sector

y Institute’s key focus is to assist its members, government and industry to provide buildings which operate efficiently and safely to support patient care.

y IHEEM has 8 Technical Platforms covering the major disciplines in estates e.g. Decontamination, Medical gases .. and Water

y Ageing population in the UK & globally is massively increasing demand for healthcare y Funding for healthcare is under huge pressure, driving need for efficiency

y Department of Health has set challenging targets for reduction of cost & carbon y IHEEM & other PEIs issuing ‘Engineering in Healthcare Report this month to act a road map for

Government following May election

y Water is a key feature in the report, linked to water borne diseases & energy conservation

(2) Reducing Energy Consumption & Carbon in the Water Sector in Healthcare

The issues we face……………………….

y Conservation of the supply side of the overall environmental engineering design process: -

y Energy

y Water

y Conservation of the demand side of the overall environmental engineering design process: -

y Reduction of energy demand for hot and cold water supplies

y Reduction of hot & cold water demand within buildings

(2) Reducing Energy Consumption & Carbon in the Water Sector in Healthcare

The issues we face……………………….

y Conservation of the demand side of the overall environmental engineering design process: -

y How do we as designers go about achieving this ?

y Reducing hot & cold water demand

y Reducing hot & cold water storage

y Matching the buildings hot & cold water needs

(2) Reducing Energy Consumption & Carbon in the Water Sector in Healthcare

The issues we face……………………….

y Reducing hot & cold water demand

y Limiting water flow from appliances

y Educating users on using water (conservation of water supplies)

y Reducing hot & cold water storage

y Reliability of the mains water supply

y Reduction in energy costs

y Increased water quality

(2) Reducing Energy Consumption & Carbon in the Water Sector in Healthcare

The issues we face……………………….

y Matching the buildings hot & cold water needs

y Crucial in reducing energy demand

y Sustainable approach to supply water within healthcare buildings

y Water is a finite resource and our supply is limited

(3) IHEEM & EMA y IHEEM can help EMA members to devise strategies for energy and carbon reductions in

the use of Water

y IHEEM can work with EMA to provide CPD and training for members

y IHEEM can establish a register of suitably qualified Authorising Engineers

y IHEEM can promote good practice through the Health Estates Journal, the e-newsletter and its website
