time to shine a spot-light on the vital rolethat mentors play inimproving the future ofour community,” saidFlowers, who has head-ed the non-profit basedin Martinsburg formore than a decade.The winning essay
will be chosen fromthose submitted to BigBrothers Big Sisters bymidnight on Jan. 20.Essay submissions
should be between 250and 500 words. Theauthor may focus onwhat he or she has
learned by serving as amentor or may describea mentor who hasmade a difference inhis or her own life,Flowers said.Along with the
essay, each entryshould include thewriter’s name, age,mailing address and aphone number andemail address, neitherof which will be pub-lished.Members of the Big
Brothers Big Sisters’board of directors willselect the top essay. Thewinning writer’s workwill be publicized inarea newspapers andthe winner also willreceive a prize package,“Learn to Ski orSnowboard” packagefor two to WhitetailResort.Entries should be

County volunteers willtake place Jan. 10, 2012 at7 p.m. at the Charles
Town Baptist ChurchFellowship Hall, 211 EastCongress Street, inCharles Town.Attendance at a trainingsession is required inorder to assist with thePoint in Time count.In case of severe
weather, the followingalternative dates havebeen selected: Jan. 26-27,2012 or Jan. 30-31, 2012.The U.S. Department
of Housing and UrbanDevelopment requires abiannual point in timehomeless count in orderfor Continuums of Careto be eligible for Federalfunding. Counts are per-formed annually nation-wide in order to gatherthe most current data onthose experiencing home-
