THE COLLECT OF THE DAYThe Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordanproclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

All sit for First Lesson: Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 29

Afferte Domino

Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor.

5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; * the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; * the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

8 The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare.

9 And in the temple of the LORD * all are crying, "Glory!"

10 The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore.

(second half of chant)

11 The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Second Lesson: Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied-- altogether there were about twelve of them. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

A minister proclaims The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark 1:4-11 Glory to you, Lord Christ. John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON The Rev. Ethan J. Cole

All stand for THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

A minister bids the intercessions As we celebrate the baptism of Christ, let us offer prayers to God who calls us to a baptism of repentance.

The Intercessor continuesFor the Church throughout the world: for Katharine, our Presiding Bishop; For William, our Bishop; for the all the holy people of God and especially for this congregation here gathered, we pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. By the baptism of the Son of God in the river Jordan. Lord, have mercy.

For all who seek Christ, and for the conversion of the whole human race. Lord, have mercy.

For mercy, peace, and justice throughout the world Lord, have mercy.

For all those in danger and need: the sick and the suffering, the hungry and the oppressed, and those in prison. Lord, have mercy.

For the dying and the dead. Lord, have mercy.

For our deliverance from all affliction, strife, and need and for those for whom we pray, silently or aloud…

The Presider concludesGod, who breathed across the waters of creation, accept the prayers we offer on this joyful feast, and lead us by your Spirit from darkness into light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNIONThe choir singsTHE OFFERTORY ANTHEM At the River Aaron Copland

Shall we gather by the river, where bright angels' feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God. Yes, we'll gather by the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, gather with the saints by the river that flows by the throne of God. Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease, soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. HYMN 121 “Christ, when for us you were baptized” (vs. 1,2,4) Caithness

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Presider The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Presider Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Presider continuesIt is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

THE SANCTUS S-128 William Mathias

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

Page 11: Chorale Prelude on Salzburg Healey Willan “Songs of thankfulness …storage.cloversites.com/calvaryepiscopalchurch/documents/Jan 8.pdf · Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed John the Baptist and with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. After the Presider breaks the bread, a period of silence is kept.

Calvary Helps Refugees Much thanks to everyone who donated toiletries for Vive La Casa refugees. Joanne Frake and I delivered them to Vive this week, and they were very happy to have them. Vive is the largest refugee shelter in the United States, providing beds for 112 individuals (last year they served more than 3,800 refugees). The toiletry items will be put to good use by the residents. We will continue to collect toiletries for Vive; they can be placed in the bin in the coat room. Thanks again for your generous contributions! Men of Calvary The men of Calvary will meet Monday, January 16 at 6:30 P.M. Our guest speaker will be Brian Bunny from the Kairos Ministry (prison ministry). This will be an in-depth look at this valuable ministry that has such a proven record of compassion and success. Dinner will be provided. Please RSVP to Dick Welte at 565-0024 or Pete Howell at 839-0975. Oblation Bearers Needed Oblation Bearers are those people who perform the important Sunday Ministry of carrying the sacraments to the altar during the service. This a straightforward commitment that is easy to do. Generally you are only asked to commit to one Sunday every other month. Please consider participating and sign up at the Ticketron table in the reception room.

OUTREACH FOOD BANK OF WESTERN NEW YORK Food for Families Drive: Saturday & Sunday January 7-8 and January 14-15 In this, our second annual Food for Families Drive, food and monetary donations will be collected at all services January 8 and 15. Your $5.00 donation ear marked for the food Bank will allow us to provide a bag of groceries from Tops for a needy family. Last year we reserved 250 bags from Tops Friendly Markets and collected enough in donations to provide the Food Bank with twice that amount. Sorting food at the Food Bank: Saturday, January 21 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. We will meet at the church at 8:30 A.M. and will carpool to the Food Bank on Holt Street. There we will sort all food collected from the Tops and Channel 2 "Food For Families" weekend. Please join us for this very worthwhile experience. We need at least 15 people, but more would be better. Please sign up in the Outreach Notebook in the reception room. Walk Off Hunger 2012: Saturday, July 28 This year Calvary Church in conjunction will Temple Beth Am will host the Walk Off Hunger event from Island Park to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York. This will be an annual event designated for the last Saturday in July. Calvary's primary responsibilities will be to provide: LOTS OF WALKERS, and VOLUNTEERS to help set-up, work the booths, participate in planning the day's activities, and help with a variety of things throughout the day. Planning: The planning for the Walk Off Hunger has already begun. Approval was granted from the Village Board and the Mayor who are very excited to have this event in Williamsville. Planning Meetings for the walk will be held at Calvary Church at 8:00 A.M on Fridays: January13, February 10, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8 and July 13. Thus far Calvary participation is about 1/3 that of Temple Beth Am. Since this project is at Calvary's initiative, we need to be better represented at these meetings. Please consider attending any and all meetings as you are able. You need not commit to committee work to be beneficial to the process. Any ideas and suggestions for making this event run smoothly will help. Please sign up in the Outreach Folder in the reception room.

Calvary Church is 100 Years Old (1912-2012) Join together as we rejoice and give thanks for 100 years of service and look forward to the next century. Let the celebration begin! Come one - come all to a kick-off cocktail party that marks the beginning of a year-long commemoration of Calvary Church’s centennial. The date is Friday, January 20th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hughson Room in the Scaife Building and all are welcome to this free-of-charge celebration. There will be music, fun, food and drink, and a look back at some highlights of the past. Reservations are not necessary but helpful. Child care will be provided (we ask that you sign-up at the ticketron in the reception room if you need childcare.) Mark the date and join in the fun! The Hughson Room in the Scaife Building For too many years, we have been remiss in using the proper name for the room we have been calling the Scaife Room. It is in the Scaife Building but the room was funded by Ella Hughson and dedicated to members of her family. As we prepare for our 100th Anniversary, we have become more historically aware and respectful of the many who have come before us and contributed to building this beautiful church. Ella Hughson is one of those ancestors to whom we are most grateful. On a plaque in the Hughson Room, you can read the following:

With Thanksgiving for lives lived with love of God and man, this Hughson Auditorium honors God’s servants Edwin Theodore Hughson (1885-1958) and his son Martin Richard Hughson (1923-1953). May they go from strength to strength in the life

of perfect service, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
