On campus, self catering accommodation is located close to the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, upon request. A number of on campus catering facilities are open with lunches ranging in price from 5 - 10. These are all located within walking distance of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. The Association of Irish Choirs(AOIC) presents its 35thInternational Choral ConductingSummer School for conductors,teachers, music students, choral

singers and musicians.

The only one of its kind in Ireland, this six-day intensivecourse offers a wealth of expertise from internationaland Irish tutors, all of whom are active conductors andexperienced teachers of conducting.

With courses designed to meet the needs and abilities ofeach student — from beginners to experienced,established conductors — participants at all levels willdevelop and refine their core conducting skills, with moreadvanced classes focusing on areas such as rehearsaltechnique, interpretation, vocal technique, style, andpronunciation of languages.

Based in the beautiful surroundings of the University ofLimerick, this year’s summer school will provide the usualintensive instruction in choral conducting given bydynamic and inspirational tutors. As well, a range ofworkshops will cover essential and stimulating topicsincluding vocal production, repertoire, working with youngchoirs, and the changing voice. Masterclasses, dailywarm-ups and whole-group choir sessions, and openrehearsals will round off the week to ensure a varied,vibrant and valuable course is enjoyed by all.

The International Choral Conducting Summer School isan approved summer course for primary teachers by theDepartment of Education and Skills Teacher EducationSection.

BEGINNER /LEVEL 1This course focuses on early stages of good posture and thefundamentals of conducting technique. Participants will developthe confidence and foundations to conduct effectively usingprimarily unison and two-part material.

FOUNDATION /LEVEL 2For beginners with some qualification or background in musicwho have elementary conducting experience. This level furtherdevelops the fundamentals of conducting technique with moreemphasis on gestures and vocal training.

TRANSITION /LEVEL 3For those with previous tuition in or experience of conducting,this level further develops conducting technique and vocaltraining, using more challenging music and score analysis, withattention to style, interpretation and rehearsal technique.

Pasi Hyökki / FINLANDGraduated from the Sibelius Academy with aM.Mus. in choral conducting. Masterclasses: EricEricson, Anders Eby. Conducts the EMO Ensembleand the Talla Vocal Ensemble. Lectured in thehistory of choral music at the Sibelius Academy.Prize for best choir conductor at the Chorus Reviewof the Tampere Vocal Music Festival in 1997, at InCanto sul Garda in Italy in 2001 and at the HaraldAndersén Chamber Choir Competition in 2003.

INTERMEDIATE /LEVEL 4For conductors with good musicianship skills, experienced inworking with choirs and/or who have had previous tuition inconducting. This level further develops conducting technique andvocal training, using more challenging music and score analysis,with increased attention to style, interpretation and rehearsaltechnique.

Gabriella Thesz / HUNGARYGraduate of the Liszt Academy of Music inBudapest, Hungary, with degrees in musiceducation, choral conducting and piano. From 1985–2012, conductor of the Hungarian RadioChildren’s Choir, of which she became ArtisticDirector in 1995. Lecturer of choral conducting atthe Liszt Academy, regular guest professor andlecturer in Hungary and internationally. Awards:Liszt Award 2004; Bartók-Pástory Award 2005.

ADVANCED /LEVEL 5For conductors with considerable experience and excellentmusicianship skills who have already studied conducting.Applicants are expected to have a strong technique with interestin further development and refinement using more challengingmusic and score analysis.

Ragnar Rasmussen / NORWAYProfessor in Choir Conducting at University ofTromsø, Norway and artistic director of the MimasChamber Choir there, and Utopia & RealitySummer Academy, Norway/Slovenia. Othernotable work includes 2007/08: guest professor atthe University of Slovenia. 2008/10: conductor ofthe Norwegian National Youth Choir, 2010:conductor of World Youth Choir. Frequently workswith professional choirs and orchestras, masterclasses for choral conductors throughout Europe.
