    Why type is important

Type is important because it's an unconscious persuader

It attracts attention and sets the style and tone of a document

It defines the feeling of the page

The right typeface can encourage people to read your message.

The wrong typeface or bad typography can make your message

    go unread.

    Serifs

Small decorative strokes that are added to

the end of a letter's main strokes are calledserifs.

Serif faces are more difficult to read in small

scale (smaller than 8pt) and in very largesizes.

Serif form contains four designs called OldStyle, Transitional, Modern and Slab Serifdesigns.

    Sans Serif

Sans serif faces don't have serifs; cross-lines at the end of a stroke. Theappearance of the letters is reduced to the

    essential figures.

Examples of Sans serif fonts include:

    Arial

    Futura

    Script, Brush, Italic & Freehand

Script typefaces are based on handwriting; but often this ishandwriting with either a flexible steel nib pen, or a broad-edged pen, and is thus unlike modern handwriting.

Brush typefaces look as if they were drawn with a brush.

    Examples include:

Brush Script Freestyle Script French Script

    Types of information on publications

Styles/sizes of text used to convey this information (what works/what doesnt andwhy)

    Decide:

The information that will appear on your publications

    Think about:

Who the publication is aimed at Size and style of text

Dont use lots of different styles

Dont use more than a couple of colours(you can use shades of the same colour or bold tohighlight information).

    Page layouts

You will have to show your development for the layout of thepage. To do this I suggest you print out your publications withthe images on (no larger than of an A4 page).

Try out different ways of laying out the text, you can do thisusing a marker pen.

Highlight the areas you want text to be and annotate todiscuss style and size.

You will need to do several of these to show your development
