  • Chokhe Angul Dada: Synopsis

Manoj Mitras comic extravaganza Chokhe Angul Dada is about a cynic whose bizarre antics rebound on him. The setting is the after-world where Chokhe Angul Dada enters after his death. On earth, Chokhe Angul Dada has always preoccupied himself in criticizing others while he remained a lazy, good-for-nothing fellow. The Almighty god and Chitragupta are intrigued by this strange persons unending, cruel and meaningless criticisms. Desperate to enter heaven, Chokhe Angul Dada even critiques gods creation and everything in the universe. As he questions the Almightys creative potential, god puts him to a hard test. God asks Chokhe Angul Dada to create a perfect human being and prove his real worth. Chokhe Angul Dada does nothing better than create a misshapen creature, a monster. And finally, this monster literally attacks Chokhe Angul Dada for having created him so ugly and gruesome.

The drama of this comedy lies primarily in the witty and sharp exchanges of the characters, both blatant and subtle. Within a span of one hour, this play has much to offerdetailed characterization, robust humor, and trenchant ironies informing the scheme of things and issues of contemporary society. The audience can easily traverse a wide gamut of laughter:

  • from ticklish to intellectual laughter, but never, for one moment lose sight of these thought-provoking concerns. All so effortlessly achieved by a dramatist of Manoj Mitras stature!
