Lodge was nominated for the Top Gold Crown Resortaward and Dave Liebenberg at Kruger Park Lodge wonthe General Manager of the year award. Congratulationsto all the staff and management at these winning resortsand lodges, not only for receiving these awards but foralso keeping the standard high within the hospitalityindustry.

There have been many articles recently referring to TheConsumer Protection Act (CPA), and investigations havebeen taking place within the timeshare industry followingallegations made by a few dissatisfied Points Clubowners. These owners claim that they are unable toresell their points and should be able to return the pointswithout penalty. The industry concern is that if membersare able to unilaterally cancel an agreement withoutany penalty, the Points Club, together with all of itsmembers, could be seriously and negatively prejudiced. The Timeshare Points Clubs own a substantial numberof timeshare weeks in resorts throughout the countryand this action could well affect these properties, aswell as the clubs who are responsible for paying leviesto the resorts.

This action could well have serious implications for alltimeshare owners as well as the timeshare resorts. FromMagicBreakaways perspective, this matter relatesprimarily to the Points Clubs and is not relevant to thetraditional timeshare owners who own a specific timeperiod in a defined unit at a resort and where the owneris a member of the Shareblock Company.

As far as MagicBreakaways resorts are concerned, it isnot believed that this will havemuch of a negative influence onthe properties, due to the fact thatthe properties are all of a highquality, and are in high demand.Furthermore, exercises conductedwith its ownership base reveal thatthe majority of its owners elect tostay at the resort in which theyoriginally purchased.

Sadly, one of the topics whichrequires constant attention is thesecurity measures being taken atall of the resorts. We have goodsecurity in place but have still hada few incidents.

We are continuously having toreview and upgrade security ascrime levels in this country remaina threat. We request that ownersand guests alike please be careful, and take safety measures to ensurethat all their valuables are keptlocked in the safe, and that theirunit is locked when unoccupied,or when guests are asleep at night.

Brian held the positionof Marketing Directorfor Legacy Hotels andformed an integral partof the Legacy Group, having commencedemployment with theGroup on the 1stDecember 1996, some17 years.

He was an amazinglybrave man and our love, thoughts and prayersgo out to Brenda hiswife and his family atthis very sad time.

He will be sadly missed.

OBITUARY:We are all deeply saddenedby the passing of BrianDavidson in the early hoursof Tuesday 19th November2013 in the Donald GordonClinic in Parktown,Johannesburg.

In the last issue of Chit Chat we advised that we wereto be introducing an internal exchange programme formembers. The original intention was to operate itourselves but after consideration it was felt that thecosts were too high and it would be better for an existingexchange company to manage this programme subjectto the price being competitive.

We have since been in discussion with more than oneoperator and were hoping to be able to finalise thissooner but negotiations have taken longer thananticipated. We are now close to finality and plan toto launch the internal exchange programme duringJanuary 2014.

All our timeshare owners will automatically become amember of the scheme, allowing exchange between allthe MagicBreakaways resorts. There will be a chargeraised once the exchange is concluded.

Many of our owners when originally acquiring theirtimeshare have in the past had the added benefit ofbeing able to participate in the RCI exchange systemshould they not wish to occupy their unit. All theseowners initially had free membership of RCI, but manyhave not renewed this because of the cost of the annualmembership. This together with the exchange fee madeit too costly for these members to continue their RCImembership. All our members will now be able to againparticipate in an exchange system without having topay an annual membership fee.

Most of our timeshare owners are extremely happywith their timeshare property and prefer the concept

of occupying their timeshare week. Some owners whoseek more variety have contemplated switching to pointsclubs due to the exchange alternatives offered by pointsclubs. The internal exchange system will now enable thesemembers to gain more flexibility from their timeshareinvestment.

Finally we would like to wish all of our owners a veryHappy Christmas, a prosperous New Year and a successful2014.

Internal Exchange system going live in 2014

Animal life on the resort

Recently, a crocodile came out of hiding and found itsway to chalet 17 on the resort. Although the crocodiletried to disguise itself as a speed bump, it was unveiledby the management team and was safely moved to anearby crocodile farm.

The KPL resident impala are thriving and, in fact, aredoing so well that some of them are breeding twice ayear instead of the normal cycle of once a year. Due tothe significant increase of impala on the resort, it hasbecome necessary to establish a “catch and release”programme to prevent inbreeding and manage theincreased numbers.

With the help of American veterinarian students, 41impala have relocated to the new Legacy property,Elephant Point. Furthermore, there are plans afoot torelocate a further 29 impala. Part of this relocation, combined with the introduction of two new males intothe herd, is to ensure a healthy future bloodline.

The Glen - a superb propertyinvestment

The Glen is a superb property investment for those insearch of nature’s beauty and peace. This secludedvillage, situated at the popular Castleburn resort, willcomprise 22 sectional title homes.

About Castleburn

The living spaces at Castleburn are clustered around thebanks of Lake Madingofani and boast generous baywindows with a spacious veranda that provides guestswith spectacular views of the majestic DrakensbergMountains.

Lake Madingofani’s shimmering surface reflects therocky summits of Garden Castle and is disturbed onlyby the breeze and the occasional trout jumping. Guestscan watch the dramatic scenery unfold as the landscapetransforms from a beautiful green mountain paradise†intoa snowy winter wonderland. This is a magical mountainretreat and a place guests will never want to leave.

Castleburn is a trout fisherman’s paradise within the southernDrakensberg. There are several nature reserves within thisarea, of which particularly the Kamberg and the Loteni areboth worth a visit. Here, at Castleburn, the nature loverfinds alpine landscapes of dramatic beauty and the perfectdestination for a relaxing time-out.

Should you be tired of home cooking then try a mealin the “Lakeview Restaurant” which is close by in therecently rebuilt clubhouse “The Creel Bar” also providesa wonderful meeting place for a quiet evening drink orto watch sport.

A tragedy turned into a success story

As with any challenge or negative occurrence in life, the final outcome can yield a positive result if approachedcorrectly. In December last year in the early hours ofthe morning, Castleburn resort suffered a tragic blowwhere the clubhouse and restaurant burnt to the ground.

To do at Castleburn

There is plenty for guests to do at the Castleburnmountain resort including trout fishing at LakeMadingofani or in the many small dams built aroundthe property. In addition there are two floodlit tenniscourts, a swimming pool, putt-putt, a chipping course, horse riding and a games room with pool table, dartsand table tennis. New visitors to the Glen will also beable to take advantage of these activities, while enjoyingthe seclusion the village promises.

For the adventurer seeking some exercise, walks areabundant in the area as Castleburn is an ideal base forthose who want to embark on challenging mountainhikes.

Other activities include the challenge of canoeing in theUmzimkulu River, which finds its source a few kilometresfrom Castleburn. The well-known Annual Drak ChallengeCanoe Marathon race starts at the Umzimkulu River atCastleburn.

As opposed to being browbeaten by the tragedy, thedirectors and management team approached it as anopportunity, and instead of just replacing and rebuilding, they got the owners involved and together planned aredesign of the premises. The project has kept theCastleburn team on their toes, but it has all been worthit as the final outcome is truly amazing.

The new reception building is built on the flat roof onthe upper level (same level as the bar). The receptionbuilding also has a deck leading out and linking intothe bar. This deck allows easy wheelchair access to theupper level “Creel Bar” which is a great addition to thenew design. This now doubles up as a roof over thepatio below offering outside dining during rainy days.

The main entrance has an undercover “cat walk” leadingoff the road to the new reception. The old receptionentrance is now the entrance to the restaurant as wellas an amenities desk where guests are able to collectamenities such as life jackets, tennis racquets etc.

The team has asked us to extend a big thank you to allwho gave their valued input and now believes thattogether a working solution for these facilities is in place. It would also like to thank the guests and owners fortheir patience during the rebuild and trust that all guestswill enjoy and celebrate the new facilities and take fulladvantage of the new “Creel Bar” and “Lakeviewrestaurant”.

On the lighter side

A solution has been found to counter the ever-growingweed problem in the lakes. Grass Carp have beenintroduced into the main lake. Although not a quick fix, this long-term approach is progressing well and resultshave already been seen. Through a careful process andthe brilliance of science, all of these fish are sterile andcannot breed, therefore our trout waters are safe. Ifguests happen to hook one of the 30kg Grass Carp andby some miracle land it, they are asked to please throwthe carp back and change to fly-fishing equipment.

New conference facilities

Castleburn has a new conference or function room. The facility is situated alongside the “LakeviewRestaurant”. The room is 40m2 and can seat up to 21delegates. It is fitted with a 60 inch smart television, fullWi-Fi, conference calling facilities and “Skype” capabilitiesoffering delegates state-of-the-art technology. The newfacilities have been added in a bid to attract corporatebusiness from all over the country. This additional facilitywill be an invaluable tool in improving rental pool returnsas well as food and beverage revenue. The venue alsooffers guests and owners the option of having a privatedining room for functions. Using the venue for privatesporting events and birthday parties will definitelyprovide for a more exciting and private function. Thekitchens offer set menus, private buffets and even aprivate family braai on the adjacent private patio over-looking the peaks of the southern berg.
