Prom Committee break Cake Sale Record

After successfully managing to secure their place at the biggest Careers event of the year, Year 10 were able to get a feel of the world of work at the NEC Skills show in Birmingham.

Geographers Go East for Field Trip

A study carried out by the Institute of Physics found that in half of state schools across the country no girls study Physics for A-level. The subject is often labelled as something only boys can do and this discourages many girls from taking it as an A-level. However, Physics links to our everyday lives and is important in many industries such as education, medicine and engineering.

Last week the Geography department took a group of Year 10 and 11 GCSE students on a field trip to gather data for their course work.

The students travelled to Canary Wharf, Stratford City and Canning Town. They used various methods of data collection including questionnaires to investigate urban living space. Khloe Best in Year 11 said 'I really enjoyed the trip. It was really interesting to see the different kinds of urban living spaces and com-

Miss Jesson in the Spotlight

Miss Jesson has been chosen for the first of our new series of ‘teacher spot-light’. Having joined the school at the beginning of September, Miss Jesson is now firmly established as the leader of PHSCE and Citizenship. I found that she’s driven, inspired and wants posi-tive change as I asked her a few ques-tions.

M.K: What drew you to Chiswick School?LJ: I liked the firm sense of community that came across on the website; also I’d heard lots about its good reputa-tion.

M.K: What are you aiming to achieve at Chiswick School?LJ: Being head of PHSCE I want to see children take a more active role in their education, school and local com-munity. I also want to encourage pu-pils to be more confident and able to engage in the world around them.

M.K: What inspired you to start teaching?LJ: I wanted to become a teacher in order to help children to succeed in school and life. I believe learning PHSCE helps the process of knowing how to connect emotionally with dif-ferent issues and causes.

We spoke to Louisa Barrett and Paulina Konopacka – two Year 13 girls study-ing Physics - who are blazing a trail for other girls looking to follow a Physics pathway.

Why do you think girls do not study Physics?Louisa: 'I don’t know why they wouldn't want to. Everyone thinks it’s a hard subject. It is pretty hard and getting into it is the toughest part. You have to work hard to understand; then it clicks.'Paulina: 'The stereotype is that only boys can do that kind of stuff. If you are doing Maths it makes it easier be-cause they support each other.'

Why do you like it?Louisa: 'It’s really interesting.' Paulina: 'You can apply it to anything.'

Does it help that one of your teachers is female?Louisa: 'They are both good teachers.'Paulina: 'But it’s nice to have a female role model.'

What are your aspirations?Louisa: 'I want to go into medi-cine and Physics is a good support-ing subject with the other scienc-es.' Paulina: 'I am interested in architec-ture and engineering so it will be a great help to me.'

Both Louisa and Paulina are showing that Physics is not just a subject for boys; we wish them well in their studies and hope other girls in the school will pursue a similar route in the future.

TEACHERSPOTLIGHTsaid 'I’m really excited that it went

so well; it was amazing to see such a big turn out of students.' In total, they raised an incredible £237.70 from over 300 cakes. Ms Elks, deputy head said 'It was amazingly successful and it was wonderful to see how proactive the Year 11s are... I can’t wait to see what the boys in the year group will do to raise money.'

Miss McDonald, Head of Year 11 said 'I couldn’t be more proud of my fantas-tic Prom Committee. I have never seen such hard work and commitment or such a huge amount of money that has been raised by so few people, we are going to have the best prom ever...Well done team!'

pare them.'

One of the highlights of the trip for many students was taking the new ca-ble car across the Thames. Max Taylor from Year 10 said 'I did struggle with approaching strangers to do the ques-tionnaires, but it was all beneficial and will help us to get the grades we deserve'

Now, it's back to computer rooms for the next three weeks worth of lessons to analyse the data and complete con-trolled assessments. We wish them all the best!
