History

Though out time many have sought out ways to better his or her lives; everything from medicine, down to the simple basic needs. Some form of medicine has been around since the dawn of man and has varied from era to era, generation to generation, and culture to culture. Now days in America there are multiple types and form medicine from modern medicine to Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM ranges from different cultural and historical medicine that is no longer used within modern medicine. Everything from an herbalist, to yoga, down to a deep entail, almost modern medicine, practice of chiropractic. The word chiropractic was developed by Rev. Samuel Weed combines the Greek words their (hand) and praxis (action), and simply meaning done by hand.

What is Chiropractics

Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure and function, and holds that the nervous system is the primary coordinator of function throughout the body. The nervous system travels down the spinal cord and chiropractic’s focus is to elevate subluxation, partial dislocation of the bones in a joint mainly the spine. In simplest terms, a subluxation or Vertebral Subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine/vertebrae move out of position and create pressure on and irritates spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. A chiropractor’s job is to relief said pressure.

Orgin

The origin of chiropractic can be traced all the way back to the beginning of time; writings from China and Greece written in 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. mention spinal manipulation and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of chiropractic care. In America chiropractics began in 1895 when Daniel D. Palmer of Iowa. Palmer was born in Pickering, Ontario on March 7, 1845 and was raised in the southern Ontario area, where he received his education. Palmer originally performed magnetic healing until he performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard, who then mentioned a few days later to Palmer that his hearing seemed better. This act lead Palmer to develop the theory that a misalignment of the bones in the body and/or spine was the basic underlying cause of all disease and the majority of these misalignments were in the Spinal Column. Almost a sense in yin and yang.

Education

There are 17 accredited chiropractic schools in the United States with a total of 19 campuses. These accredited chiropractic schools are accredited through the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC).  Doctors of chiropractic must complete four to five years at an accredited chiropractic college. The complete curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. Approximately 555 hours are devoted to learning about adjusting/manipulation techniques and spinal analysis in colleges of chiropractic. In many medical schools, training manipulation is generally not requirement and isn’t offered either. The Council on Chiropractic Education requires that students have 90 hours of undergraduate courses with science as the focus. Those intending to become doctors of chiropractic must also pass the national board exam and all exams required by the state in which the individual wishes to practice.

Education (Con’t)

With the Chiropractic curriculum many Chiropractors learn to what is called a “Mixer”. Mixer chiropractors diagnose and treat patients from various points of views such as osteopathic, medical, and chiropractic. The other Chiropractor is a “Straight” which believes in philosophical principles set forth by D.D. and B.J. Palmer that vertebral subluxation is a primary underlying risk factor for diseases and patient complaints are secondary and have no bearing on Chiropractic services. Unlike straight chiropractors, mixers believe subluxation is one of many causes of disease, and they incorporate mainstream medical diagnostics and employ many diagnoses and treatments such a x-ray machine to get an inside look at the problem, physical therapy to exercise the outlying tissue, mixers tend to be open to mainstream medicine and are the majority group. This information is essential to know when you are looking at chiropractor to choose. The goal is to find one that meets your/patients needs.
