How to Identify and Handle Medical Emergencies in Your PracticeLori Holt, RN-BCProvided by NCMICFriday • 4 - 6pmAfter attending Lori Holt’s program, doctors will be armed with the information they need to handle medical emergencies in the office. Lori engages the audience with the real-life practical issues that confront doctors of chiropractic. This presentation will cover the doctor’s response to cardiac, diabetic and seizure disorder patient emergencies in the office. Emphasis will be placed on identification of symptoms, emergency response, and documentation. Topics such as staff training, utilization of family members, and overall doctor responsibility will be discussed. 2 CEs

Before joining NCMIC in 2012, Lori worked as a nurse for 30 years. Her extensive nursing background in cardiology has provided her with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Among other things, she has significant experience making rounds in the hospital with cardiologists and performed cardiac triage in the emergency room and in house prior to the physician’s exam.

In addition, Lori has worked as an emergency room nurse manager, and she and her husband previously owned a business where they taught employees at industrial companies basic life support and emergency care techniques. This combined background enables Lori to share

hands-on tips and guidance to DCs as they face the ever-changing world of healthcare.

ICD-10 Essentials: What You Must Know NowKathy Mills Chang, MCS-P, CCPCSponsored by ChiroTouchFriday • 4 - 6pmThe chiropractic profession is going through the biggest “adjustment” to our diagnostic process in over 30 years. ICD-10 will highly impact and transform your practice. It is, quite simply, a monumental shift in the language used to describe the conditions you treat on a daily basis, and by now, you should be almost ready for implementation.

This session will first cover your implementation timeline, the necessary mechanics and naming conventions we’ll face in chiropractic documentation, and how to practice with and work with the newly released codes. Learn how your documentation will drive your medical necessity like never before and make sure you’re absolutely ready for October 1 and beyond. Here are just a few topics the presentation will cover:

• Understand what ICD-10 is all about, how it affects you and your team, and how it differs from ICD-9.

• Learn how to create a focused and organized strategic ICD-10 plan.

• Understand the difference between clinically appropriate care vs. medically necessary care in ICD-10.

• Properly use ICD-10’s new codes and its documentation requirements to explain the specifics of your patient’s mechanism of injury, external causes and other clarifying factors for bulletproof records. 2 CEs

Since 1983, Kathy Mills Chang has been providing chiropractors with hands-on training, advice and tools to improve the financial performance of their practices. Kathy is a Certified Medical Compliance Specialist (MCS-P) and is one of fewer than 100 certified in the chiropractic profession. Now celebrating her 31st year in

chiropractic, Kathy is not only a well-known and sought-after speaker, but has served in national and state level chiropractic organizations and serves on diverse boards and advisory councils related to the profession.

In 2007, Kathy Mills Chang, Inc. was created to help chiropractors make and keep more money. As chiropractic reimbursement and compliance specialists, their training arm, KMC University, effectively analyzes and enhances the financial performance of chiropractic practices. Specializing in coding, documentation, insurance, patient financial procedures, Medicare and compliance, Kathy leads a team of 17 to deliver these solutions to the profession, both personally and virtually . . . making the implementation quick and cost-effective.

CA ProgramKathy Mills Chang, MCS-P, CCPCSponsored by ChiroTouchDepending upon your chiropractic team, you may be the first person patients meet when they come in the door, the last person they see before they leave, and the one behind the scenes handling patient records, billing and collections, compliance issues, and much more. How to wear all those hats sanely and gracefully? These trainings are for you.

Compliance and YouSaturday • 10:30am - 12pmIt’s no secret that records requests from Medicare and private insurers are on the rise, and chiropractic is under the microscope like never before. Learn all you can about compliance rules and regulations to help keep the claims submissions and follow-up process running smoothly for the practice.

Medicare and Beyond!Saturday • 1:30 - 3:30pmEven the most seasoned doctors and team members have questions about and are confused by Medicare. Not only do Medicare rules change as often as the seasons, but carriers, consultants, and others in the profession each give a slightly different picture of “reality.” We’ll cover the basics of how Medicare works, benefiting the newest team members and doctors, and we’ll also cover four important areas of focus great for anyone interested in managing the Medicare monster. In this session, you’ll learn: • Exactly, in detail, how to administer Medicare in your office, including

enrollment, participation, and patient eligibility.• Medicare maintenance from documentation to charges. • How to provide notice to Medicare patients for those services not

covered by Medicare. • The differences when billing and collecting for Medicare patients as

opposed to cash or privately insured patients. • Just why DCs may not opt out of Medicare. • The four reasons why participation in a Discount Medical Plan

Organization (DMPO) makes perfect sense for Medicare patients. • How the Medicare ABN factors into your Medicare financial policies.

Whether you’re new to chiropractic or a seasoned CA, don’t be lulled into thinking that you have it mastered. A recent report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) on chiropractic Medicare billing indicated that 7 out of 10 offices had billing errors on their claims. Are you one of them? Join us for this critical Medicare training.

Understanding Billing and CollectionsSaturday • 4 - 6pmTighten up billing and collections to and from both patients and third-party payers so that every step in the process is orderly, accountable, and implementable. Learn to collect every penny possible with a system that takes you from charge entry to zero balance and makes insurance verification, insurance follow-up, and accounts receivable reconciliation easy to implement.

Drive Your Own LineDavid Marcarian, MASponsored by MyoVisionSaturday • 10:30am - 12pmOver the past several years, insurance changes and the economy have significantly impacted the chiropractic profession. Marcarian has been listening to his 7,000 clients complaining about the impact on their lives and practices, yet most appear stuck in a holding pattern, hoping and waiting for the 80’s to return. The 80’s are over, along with shoulder pads and perms. Marcarian introduces a new approach; something developed while honing his skills as a high performance race car driver. In “Drive Your Own Line,” Marcarian shares secrets he learned on the race track and how these, along with other paradigm shifters, will provide a fresh new approach to flourishing personally and professionally in this challenging healthcare environment. 1.5 CEs

David Marcarian was born to immigrant parents who arrived by boat in New York Harbor the year he was born. They went through Ellis Island, but as tourists. At the age of 5, he could take his bike completely apart and put it back together. In high school, he was known as an enigma, playing first chair violin in the orchestra, electric bass in a loud rock band, and first string defensive end on the football team. Being rebellious by nature made him very comfortable among chiropractors. After completing an undergraduate degree in Physics, he attended the NASA-University Program, obtaining a Master’s in Psychophysiology. At 27, he was awarded a prestigious $450K grant from the NIH to design the MyoVision. In 1990, William McIlvaine, a

World War II Veteran and one of the DCs jailed for practicing medicine without a license, challenged Marcarian to apply his technology to chiropractic patients. The results established objectively the power of the adjustment, establishing the importance of technology in chiropractic.
