This month I am proud to say we

are introducing our new consumer

based platform for fish and chips -

“greatbritishchippy.com” to the trade.

We have been talking about this for over

two years now and it’s a great time to

start the process. It is hoped that Great

British Chippy will become the home of

our national dish and will promote fish and

chips 365 days a year! Not only will we link

to lots of national sites but we will also be

promoting the top shops to over 32 million

visitors that we attract to the UK every

year. If you own or run a fish and chip shop

or are a supplier and want to be involved

please email me at austen@chippychat.

the thought process that bit easier.

John and Karen Pearce, who own Alf’s Fish and Chip Shop in Lynch Road, are attempting to raise money

on behalf of New-Man Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The support group sponsors free prostate cancer test days for men.

Alf’s Fish and Chip Shop will hold a giant raffle with a £1,000 cash first prize.

John said: “A lot of customers who come in, quite a few of them have had prostate cancer.

“Ladies get scans every so often for breast cancer. Men don’t checked for prostate cancer.

“Last year, New-Man Prostate Cancer Support paid for 577 men to be tested and found that 97 of them needed to be referred to their GP.

“Of those, half of them were found to have prostate cancer.”

Graham Smith, a member of New-Man Prostate Cancer Support Group, said money raised would go towards funding more free tests for men.

“If it is not discovered and escalates into the rest of your body, the outcome is considerably bleaker.”

Alf’s Fish and Chip Shop is well known in the community for having raised money for a variety of causes over the years.

Mr Pearce said: “This is the biggest fundraiser we have ever done.

“Since me and Karen have been here we have raised about £30,000 for charities.

Anyone who would like to buy a raffle ticket or make a donation should visit Alf’s Fish and Chip Shop. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday, June 1.

Weymouth Chippy Tackles CancerCancer is a disease that touches all of us whether it be family or friends or even our customers. The

owners of a Weymouth fish and chip shop are set to host their biggest ever fundraiser to raise

awareness of prostate cancer.

Fish & Dips!

This year’s Comic Relief raised a staggering £80 million for charities home and abroad. Simpson’s of Cheltenham were one of the many fish and chip shops

in the UK who joined in with the fun collecting money raising their profile and of course tempting extra customers into the shop. We spoke to owner James

Richie on how they got involved.

We did the ‘bath of batter’ 4 years ago for Red Nose Day and it was a great success,

we raised around £660 by fundraising and getting sponsorship for a few weeks beforehand. Since then the bath has been out the back (of the shop), we use it to grow parsley for our homemade tartare sauce. This year we were thinking what we could do for comic relief and sat down with our PR team to discuss, however it was only a week before the day, & we were short on time.

We loved the idea of a bath of batter again and went on the hunt for a local

celeb to get in. We asked local MPs, well known journos and even jockeys! (It was the Cheltenham Festival after all). When Claire Carter said she was game for a dip we were so pleased! She’s well known in the area for having the lunchtime slot on BBC Radio Gloucestershire. We only had a few days to promote and all donations were collected on the night so to get £220 in just a few hours was great. Most of it was loose change from orders. On top of this we raised more via people sending donations directly to Comic Relief as they’d heard about it on the radio.

As she’s a presenter we received plenty

Page 11: Chippy Chat and Fast Food Magazine - April

of publicity about our efforts, we were on BBC Points West and even made the montage on the main Comic Relief show. She spoke about it every day before and even had a count down on the day, I also got to speak to her live on the show. While she was in the bath Twitter went crazy, I’ve never had so many notifications! During the days after we were mentioned on Claire’s show several times and many customers have been talking about it since.

We were busy too although it’s difficult to know whether that was because it was Cheltenham Gold Cup day or if the bath

of batter brought in any extra trade. She certainly had a few fans there.

After Claire left two members of staff, Keleigh and Stephan took their turns in the bath to carry on the show, they did a great job chatting to customers and getting money in the buckets.

It was great to raise money for the charity, and to get our community involved. It helps to keep fish and chips in the spotlight too.

James sent his special thanks to Stelios at World of Ceres for donating the batter.

The campaign organisers at the MSC and WWF have hailed the fish-facers as ‘Ocean Heroes’ after its success for Earth Hour 2015.

George Clark, #fishface organiser explained: “Ocean sustainability is an incredibly serious issue. Nearly a third of fish stocks are overfished or depleted but there are some fishermen and boats that are fishing sustainably and making a huge difference.”

In the second week of the campaign, MSC UK team travelled to Durham University where The Whitby Fish and Chip Company had their new van for its first event. Over 300 portions of MSC certified fish and chips were served to hungry students who exchanged a #fishface selfie showing their support for sustainable fishing and healthy oceans for their free, sustainable lunch.

Adrian Fusco, Owner of Quayside Fish & Chips, was very pleased to be involved with such the popular #fishface event;

“It’s been really well received and great to see how much interest it’s created at the University of Durham…it’s fantastic!

It’s really important to us to be MSC certified; it’s our third fish and chip shop to be certified and our new van is our 4th outlet.

We see the future of our industry is using MSC certified fish.”

There were 12 MSC certified fish and chip shops that took part on the #fishface social media campaign, these were: Fish CityKingfisher PlymouthHarboursideEnoch’s Fish CafeOlley’s Fish ExperienceWhitby Fish and Chips

George,#fishface organiser thanked all who took part; “We know that British consumers want sustainable fish in supermarkets and restaurants and last year the British public bought over £350 million of MSC labelled fish. #fishface is a fun way for each of us to show our support for sustainable fishing and build the demand for MSC labelled sustainable seafood, helping to support fishermen who are transforming the way we fish our oceans. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part, you’re all Ocean Heroes!”

Fish Face!

More than 500 students, celebrities, politicians, bands and fish and chip businesses have shared their #fishface

in support of sustainable fishing.

The RANGE -

It’s usually the biggest purchase a chippy makes for their business

It’s a desision they have to live with for a long long time

It is a HUGE desission!

No pressure then?

So “Who ya gonna call?”

At Hewigo we try to make your choice simple. Our ‘standard’ range is equipped with frying

pans, baskets, chip box, display cabinets, motorised extraction systems, mechanical gas thermostat controls and manual bucket filtration.

However there are 4 steps that outlets can take to upgrade their new range to increase the performance and set even greater standards in their shops.

1 High EfficiencyHigh Efficiency is a phrase that is used very loosely in the UK, unlike Holland where it has a specific meaning. Hewigo ranges operate at 93% efficiency - the highest level achievable - and are certified by the gold standard - Gastec. If you talk to a range maker about high efficiency ask to see the certificate. We have made more high efficiency ranges in the UK than all the others combined.

2 FiltrationHere the latest technology is three-stage filtration: In addition to the standard coarse and fine crumb filters, the returning oil is now sucked under pressure through a third micro-filter. The result is a refinement of the oil such that it retains its optimum performance up to three times longer.

3 Digital ControlThe advanced electronics allow the oil to be heated gently to prolong frying quality and provide turbo-control when demand is high. This can be combined with touchscreen technology, at eye-level if required, for even more sensitive and visible control. It can also be linked to a frying management system to give both information and diagnosis.

4 DesignThe co-ordination of style and function is a vital aspect of marketing an outlet. Hewigo ranges can be finished in brushed or polished stainless steel with convex, concave or traditional styled front panels. Bespoke or standard graphic logos can be added for effect. Lighting is by LED which offers endless combinations of colour and lighting sequences and also saves energy.

3D signage, often to match exterior signage, can be incorporated together with laser cut graphic backlit panels.

Phillip Purkiss General Manager says “These features are available to all our customers but the key factor is to choose a company whose manufacturing process is robust enough and with the engineering and service excellence to respond exactly to your requirements. The emphasis lies with the operator to ask the right questions and the range maker to be flexible and innovative to come up with the right answers.

The Hewigo 4 step challenge! The successful fish and chip outlet has had to adapt to meet the challenge of the many take-away options. Equally, the range producer, must constantly improve its ranges to meet this ‘new’ demand. Features that were perhaps seen as the novelty option a few years ago are standard today.

Every range they produce is unique expertly designed and crafted to their customer’s specific requirements, to

suit their location, premises and budget. As well as having oodles of history Preston

and Thomas are set to create history too with the launch of a brand new high efficiency range.

One owner who has replaced a 40 plus year old Preston and Thomas with a new

more efficient model is Dave Harris of The Blue Dolphin in Newbury.

Dave bought the shop, and then saved enough for a complete refit. He had had a long association with Rangetec (now Preston and Thomas) so they manufactured and installed a three pan island

range and counter to replace the 46 year old, two pan wall range which had

been in the shop originally.Dave said “The range is really striking and

makes the shop look so modern. Lots of customers comment on how good it looks. The efficiency of the pans is excellent, heat time is very quick and they stay at the correct temperature too. When we are cooking chips (and drop them in) the temperature drop is less noticeable. The island range gives us a very comfortable space to work in too.”

The owner of Humphreys in Allington

is also a firm admirer of Preston and Thomas. Chris Humphrey after a recent fire in the shop needed to get things up and running as quickly as possible again. Martin Lewis from Preston &Thomas visited the shop and made plans for manufacture and delivery of a new 3 pan island range.

The shop was reopened within eight weeks. Chris said “Preston and Thomas are the Rolls Royce of the range industry. Their service and backup is incredible and the new range we ordered not only looks great but is very efficient indeed.”

Martin Lewis of Preston and Thomas said “If you would like us to help you with your new range purchase, please give us a call. We can offer you great service, backup and price plus an industry first; an ultra-high efficiency range which is coming very soon.”

Preston & Thomas have been manufacturing high-quality custom-made fish

and chip frying equipment for over 100 years! Now over a year into new

ownership they are still delivering the same high standards.

KFE have really put themselves at the front of the grid for frying range purchase. We asked just

why many of the country’s best shops choose KFE?

Stuart Fusco - Quayside - ‘The Kiremko Frying Range is an excellent product for us, it is not just the frying range to consider when purchasing a new range

but the design, ease of use, reliability, engineering back up, installation project management are all equally important and we have found KFE to be excellent at the full package.’ Mitch Tonks – Rockfish - ‘When we decided to expand our business we chose KFE as our range supplier, we really liked Paul who was most helpful though the sales process to ensure we had the range designed exactly as we wanted, delivery has always

been on time and installation has been smooth and we have got to know the team very well and they feel like part of our business. The performance of the ranges are superb and we get the exact cooking results we want. After service is second to none with any problems sorted immediately, we now have 6 ranges at the heart of our business and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend KFE and the team to anyone.’

Stefan Avey – Seasiders – ‘We decided to get a new fryer last year as we needed more frying capacity. We opted for a 5 pan with chargrill. It was an easy decision to go with KFE as we have been using a 3 pan fryer from them for the last 14 years. Performance, reliability and service are all of the highest order.’

Pole Position!Purchasing a range can be a daunting prospect.

After the shop it is likely to be your second biggest purchase. You need to make the right decision. You need to be comfortable and assured with

the advice given on range layout and design. You need to be confident on professionalism on survey,

installation and after sales service.

Basically, if you look at our web-site you will get the distinct impression that we at Scotrange do everything

from the heart. Our range was born from a wealth of experience and knowledge accumulated over the years and by listening to our customer’s requirements -resulting in our ‘Bespoke’ Superior Build Range; a ‘Work Horse’ solid and reliable.

However, just as important is an efficient and effective back-up service i.e. in the unlikely event of a break-down. In Scotland where we manufacture our ranges it’s easy. We have an excellent reputation, for a start we don’t have many callouts, and on the occasions where we do our customer’s are extremely satisfied with our rapid response - which they can verify, remember, they’re reading this magazine as well! So, going Nationwide was always a bit of a stumbling block for as much as we undoubtedly have confidence in the Quality and Reliability of our Range, for customer’s peace of mind we believe it is important to provide the reassurance that a reliable back-up service is in place should the need arise. So we avoided spreading our wings until now!

We are pleased to announce that we now have a network of very experienced Frying Range Engineers dotted nationwide with the same attitude as ourselves. We can confidently Supply our Bespoke Frying Ranges Nationwide coupled with a reliable back-up Service whilst maintaining our untarnished reputation. Win Win!

Points of InterestSince we have been manufacturing ranges, we have NEVER had to change a pan. We’re sure you may have heard some of the horror stories about burst pans in ranges only a few years old, and the associated stress and thousands of pounds involved in having to change them. We at Scotrange still consider our range to be young at Ten Years Old.

Contact us and we will be more than happy to give you telephone numbers of any of our customers – not just a select few. Most of our Customer’s have exceptionally busy shops and can verify that our Ranges- no matter how fancy or plain in design (your choice) – can definitely Walk the Walk. Saying you’re the Best to actually being the best is borne out by the test of time and ‘doing what it actually says on the tin’.

Come and Join the ‘Scotrange’ Family, Our Sales Engineer not only has experience in manufacturing and design but also a wealth of experience from a Fryer’s point of view.

Check out our website; take time to study the truthful comments, and honest customer feedback.

We often hear Fryer’s say that ‘Ranges are not as strong or as well built as they used to be’.

Oh Yes They Are At Scotrange!

To ensure that we have a filtration system that we’re proud of we constantly update and re-work our ranges to meet today’s modern demands. In fact we have completely redesigned our filtration so our clients’ oil is managed more efficiently, plus the system filters even the fine carbon that the increasingly popular High Efficiency pans produce.We don’t rely on a gravity fed system;

our filtration mechanically drags the oil through three separate elements: a crumb filter, then a miroil bag, finally being pumped through a carbon pad removing even the finest elements of debris from the oil before returning it via a separate return pipe, back to the pan. This system, unique to us, is called Active Triple Filtration and is included as standard in all our ranges we design.

Experienced in High EfficiencyAnother area where we excel at is our High Efficiency pans; the facts speak for themselves:Our High Efficiency pans are in excess of 92% efficientIt’s not just us who rate our pans: they have been approved and are regulated by Gastec, the independent government body in HollandFlorigo have a wealth of experience in building High Efficiency ranges: we have produced them for 15 yearsAll our technology is around the pan, rather than through it, leaving you to free or basket fry without cumbersome heat exchangers in the wayOur High Efficiency pans give you the control you need regardless of the experience of the fryer: our burners alter according to the volume put in the pans, giving you a consistent productDon’t forget, we’re so confident in our pans and what they can do, we offer a no quibble 5 year pan warranty and we were the first company to do so.

We asked Mark Johnson exactly why and how they get you results when banks and other lenders go cold… Mark Johnson has had over 15 years of breathing and sleeping finance in all its forms. Mark knows the fish and chip and takeaway business extremely well. He will help you with your business plans and will also look at how you manage your finances too. There are several reasons why Mark Johnson can do this when banks can’t. For starters and very importantly Johnson Reed have their own lending fund as well as a panel of underwriters. Mark says “We look at every clients circumstances on an individual basis. We look at ability to repay and we look at experience and opportunity. I will actually view a shop using satellite technology and see how many houses there are and how much competition there is”.“I can usually tell if I think we can help very quickly - if an operator has a good personal attitude to credit and their own home, I can usually broker a deal with the best rate available. I will work with a client to ensure that not only their equipment purchasing leaves them with cash flow but some great tax efficient savings too”. He added. An example of how Mark’s expertise helped recently was with Mr Spiros Bojouri who decided to completely revamp his new business – The Seagulls Ocean Boat in Brigdnorth, Shropshire. Spiros has been well established in the trade sold

his existing leasehold and took over and invested in this new business. He invested a new Hopkins four pan high efficiency counter frying range. Mark arranged in house funding (quicker not so much detail needed as banks) from Martin Johnson. Spiros received his no deposit finance in the form of a lease deal, which gives him the best financial deal through tax breaks. What’s more much of the interest payable from the loan was offset.Mark visited The Seagulls Ocean Boat both before and after the investment & is pleased to report business has dramatically improved since the refit. He said “Once tax savings and improved power savings are taken into account the total cost of leasing a new range might be much less than you think. To see someone like Spiros improving his business with our help makes us very happy indeed”For more information on how Johnson Reed can assist you in your next range and/or equipment purchase or want to discuss how purchasing equipment can be tax efficient and save you money contact them today

Over two years ago the team at Isle of Ely Produce sat down to decide how they could help promote

fish and chip shops in the UK. John and Oliver Boutwood were adamant that in order for us to sustain and eventually grow our market place we would need to work together. It was then we came up with the idea for a national platform for fish and chips.

A place where consumers can learn about our national dish, somewhere we can link to other national companies, and a site where we can create a fish and chip collective as big as the national chains of fast food providers. Somewhere we can promote the admirable work done by the likes of the Potato Council with chip week, Seafish celebrating the nation’s best, or even highlight the wonderful NFFF Q award holders.

The name of this platform – “Great British Chippy” encompassing Twitter, Facebook and as GreatBritishChippy.com.

It will have a fresh crisp and funky design and it will capture the tradition of fish and chips seeking to tempt in Brits and some of the 32 million people who flood into the UK on holiday (most of whom know of our dish).

Although the concept is launched today greatbritishchippy will be developed over the next few months with your help. We already have some great people who

want to be involved. We are seeking partners (trade) and owners to help us build and create this platform. We are looking to have regular meetings with a team of people who will decide who, what and where to target once we launch to the consumer. We understand that individual shops work well in their market places, but feel there is a gap to promote our cherished brand (inter)nationally.

This team will represent the whole industry and we are looking for people to come forward and join us.

Greatbritishchippy is looking to promote fish and chips to new markets and capitalise on PR and promotional opportunities throughout the year.

First PartnerI am pleased to announce our first trade partner is none other than Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Frankies from Brae Shetland. Valerie Johnson director of Frankies said “It is great to see Chippy Chat developing a unique national communications platform for quality fish and chips shops throughout the UK. This will benefit all members and will bridge the gap between social media channels and our customer base, and also a great tool to tap into a larger conversation within our trade”

Mail me at [email protected] if you would like to be involved

The Heinz SqueezMe! offering perfectly meets consumers’ needs for a mess-free, easy to use sauce

portion. Now available in six great flavours, the brand is supporting this launch with new self-merchandised cases, HoldMe and carousel units, as well as in-outlet posters to help Fish and Chip shops drive all-important impulse purchases.

Research shows that customers are willing to pay up to 35p for a Heinz SqueezMe! Pod(1) – that’s an almost guaranteed sale with every purchase. The ‘grab and go’ packs contain almost three times as much product as a standard sachet, offering fantastic value for money and even more of the nation’s much-loved Heinz sauces(2).

Chris Gardiner, UK Marketing Lead for Heinz Foodservice, comments:

“Continuing the current success of our SqueezMe! pods, we are pleased to introduce two more of the UK’s favourite flavours to the collection. Heinz Barbecue sauces are the UK’s market leading varieties(3) and Garlic Sauce is an all-time take-away favourite, so we’re confident these new additions will exceed expectations on both range and taste. Fish and chip shops that currently give away free private label sauces are doing so at a cost to their business, so stocking our pods for extra profit makes perfect sense as we approach the busiest trading period of the year.” Available with a range of practical and appealing stocking solutions; new Heinz SqueezMe pods are available nationwide now. To get the Heinz merchandise and POS kit, Fish and Chip shop owners should call 0800 575 755.

There’s a guy walks in the chip shop swears he’s …. Sting

Sting, David Miliband, the Ord family and Colmans staff.

He was visiting the area for the annual South Shields Lecture, organised by the town’s former MP and Foreign

Secretary David Miliband, on Friday. It’s become tradition that Mr Miliband,

who now resides in New York, brings guests to his favourite restaurant and in the past few years has introduced the likes of Hollywood A-lister Patrick Stewart, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams to its charms.

Owner Richard Ord said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Mr Miliband still brings these huge names to South Shields and we feel extremely fortunate that he chooses to bring them to our restaurant.

“Sting enjoyed fish and chips with mushy

peas and he loved them. He spent a lot of time with people and everyone thought he was great.

“We are delighted Sting, David and their guest enjoyed their meals – empty plates are what we always like to see in our restaurant.

Mr Miliband took to Twitter afterwards to say: “Huge thanks to @ColmansSeafood for prize Fish and Chips. @OfficialSting.”

Friars Pride is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Saturday Night Takeaway

The Class of 75We thought we would have some fun here at Chippy Chat and find out who or what else was also born in 1975. High profile births that year included celeb chef Jamie Oliver, TV Duo Ant and Dec and former England Captain David Beckham.

Notable launches that year included the Vauxhall Cavalier, Fawlty Towers first showing on the tv and the year that saw the first public appearance of the Sex Pistols.

Certainly worth a celebration!

Arguably the business can trace its heritage back to 1898, where the company was a tallow business in

the Peterborough area. The Briggs family purchased this business in 1960 and 15 years later, the family incorporated Friars Pride Ltd, the company we know today.

The family business marked the occasion at FRY I.T. 2015, which took place at the BIC in Bournemouth on 1st March 2015. The celebrations continued with the unveiling of a new 168 pallet purpose built freezer at the Norwich Depot. This

investment, along with an expanding fleet and workforce, satellite depot telephone and IT systems, is testimony to the company’s ongoing commitment to growth and quality service within the Fish and Chip and Fast Food industry.

Rebecca Lord, Managing Director Friars Pride Ltd notes: “It’s a fantastic time at Friars Pride and a very exciting anniversary year! It is great to see that amongst our customers are families just like our own, who have remained committed to the Fish & Chip industry through the generations!”

Chipless in Seattle?

Chippy’s Fish and Drink, the newest member of the Ethan Stowell Restaurant family, opened in 2014.

The 600-square-foot space is bright and inviting with a wood floor, light grey walls, and a large neon red “FISH” sign on the back wall. The space shares an exposed brick wall with Staple & Fancy and has a big chalkboard menu above the kitchen at the back of the space.

Chippy’s Fish and Drink has a menu packed full of seaside classics. The soups, salads, and snacks section includes: a Dungeness Crab Louie ($16), an Oregon Bay Shrimp Louie ($13), Oyster Chowder ($10), Salmon Chowder ($12), Clam Chowder ($10), St. Jude’s Albacore Tuna Poke ($14), Dungeness Crab Cocktail ($16), Oregon Bay Shrimp

Cocktail ($13), Fried Oysters with malt vinegar mayo ($12), Dungeness Crab and Avocado dip with potato chips ($16), Smoked Salmon dip with potato chips ($12), and a Little Gem salad with buttermilk dressing and radishes ($9). As for sandwiches, there’s a Dungeness Crab Roll ($16), Fried Oyster Sandwich ($12), and a Salmon Sandwich ($16).

Then, of course, there are the fish and chips, at the heart of the menu. As season permits, there is Ling Cod ($15), Halibut ($19), Salmon ($19), Oysters ($14), and East Coast Clams ($15) with a smattering of sauces: spicy mayo, remoulade, classic tartar, malt vinegar mayo, and cocktail sauce. Additional sides are available as well: potato salad ($6), caraway coleslaw ($6), fries ($6), pickles ($5), and chips ($5).

Sennen David, Food and Beverage Director of Ethan Stowell Restaurants, has put together a stellar bar menu. Chippy’s offer wine, hard ciders, and have a well-rounded spirits selection, but the major focus is on craft beer and whiskey.

Not any more - This month we take you to the US to visit Chippy’s Fish and Drink a fish and chip restaurant in Seattle.

About Ethan StowellEthan Stowell is the executive chef and owner of Ethan Stowell Restaurants in Seattle. He was named one of the Best New Chefs in America by “Food & Wine” in 2008 then chosen as a Best New Chef All-Star in 2013.

Ethan told Chippy Chat “At Chippy’s we’re really striving to combine the best of both the old and new worlds--we’re serving  a good representation of British cooking that’s suited to the American palate.  We respect the British tradition with a light, crispy batter for the fish plus Sarson’s vinegar, excellent chips, and mushy peas to go along with. Then we’ve got a handful of modern dishes as well--shrimp ceviche, tuna poke, crab dip and the like. It all comes together in a really fun menu that combines tradition and modernity seamlessly.”

Judging by reviews Chippys are serving great food and drink

A recent Trip Adviser reviewer really loved their experience at Chippys. “Though they offer a number of taste dishes from a Shrimp and Cucumber Ceviche, Dungeness & King Crab Cocktail, and a number of other Seafood based offerings

their star is their Fish & Chips. We all tried the Rockfish, but they also offer Halibut, True Cod, Salmon, Oyster and Clam. This was easily the best Fish & Chips I have ever had, even better then those I have eaten in England or Canada. Super fresh, light and flaky with a wonderfully crunchy breading with no oily taste what so ever. The also give you a choice of dips, all made in house and the original tarter was heavy on dill and delicious.”

Launched at the Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence by UK Director Jack-Robert Møller, the

programme has united chippies based on their excellent food, sustainability credentials, first-rate venues and commitment to serving great fish to their customers. The 2015 marketing campaign will promote the selected chippies through a high-profile, national programme of activity, involving retail activation and PR. It will also build supply chain transparency by connecting the diner to the fishermen and add value through shared expertise between its members. Union Norge, gives fish and chip lovers an instantly recognisable symbol to show

quality and environmental commitment from shop members in the network. Consumers will also be rewarded for returning to shops within the Norge Network, with gifts available for repeat purchases and the chance to win a fantastic trip to Norway. The activity follows on from the success of the NSC’s 99p promotion in May 2014, where 99 fish & chips shops around the country offered portions for 99p in the first campaign of its kind. 83 percent of shops involved experienced an increase in customers on the day and over seven million people in the UK were reached thanks to excellent media coverage.Cod is the UK’s favourite fish, and Norway’s cold, clear waters are home to the world’s largest and most abundant supply of this much loved fish. Norwegian cod and haddock are frozen-at-sea on board some of the finest fishing vessels, to lock in artic freshness until it reaches the fryer. NSC UK Director Jack-Robert Møller comments: “It’s brilliant to launch the campaign; we hope it will drive customers to each of our recruited shops. We are also very grateful to our partners Smales, Fastnet and Unique Seafood who have helped make this possible”“We have been supplying the UK fish and chip industry with high quality cod and haddock from the cold clear waters of Norway for over 50 years, and we hope that Union Norge will give us the chance to reward some of our favourite chippies with a campaign that will grow their businesses too.”To find out whether you can sign up for Union Norge, contact your distributor directly. One of the most respected distributors to the Fast Food and Hospitality Industry in London and

the South East they have always strived to deliver the best quality products. This strategy has led to tremendous sales growth and a very loyal customer base. The distinctive Sparks branded box has an unparalleled position in its market place and is proud to have helped change the somewhat frowned upon perception of the humble beef burger. The Sparks green tape burger as it is widely known has a unique flavour and uses a secret recipe formula which is both consistent and extremely tasty, it has grown into a “must have” brand and is sold through many independent wholesalers throughout the UK and indeed worldwide and growth outstrips all industry data and sales forecasts.

Another celebration and a perfect example of their commitment to quality in practise is the 15th birthday of sister company The Burger Manufacturing Company Ltd (BMC) who were formed in 2000 in a purpose built manufacturing plant in Mid Wales to supply John Sparks (owner and founder) who was increasingly frustrated at the quality and consistency of product that he was receiving from his existing supplier. Today BMC turns over in excess of £9 million and has wholesalers strategically placed around the UK, Europe and the Middle East. BMC’s own brand beef burger widely known as “the pink tape” has transformed the bland and tarnished image of the humble quarter pounder and taken it back to a respectable and quality offering which is still extremely good value for money.

To celebrate this momentous occasion both companies will be launching a range of Premium Beef Burgers which will compliment any menu or specials board. The range includes the products below and is available through your normal

distribution channel from Monday 6th April 2015.

95% Kobe Style Premium Steak Burger 282g and 170g

(Our steak burger is made from Wagyu beef a Japanese native breed which is widely acknowledged as the finest beef in the world. Its unique flavour and subtle texture make it the king of all burgers)

95% Aberdeen Angus Steak Burger 282g and 170g

(Our 100% farm assured steak burger is sourced from certified UK breeders and only the finest cuts are used to create this lean and tender burger)

90% Halal Chipotle Beef Burger 170g and 113g

(This unique burger uses our premium recipe and a bespoke chipotle seasoning which gives it a delicate “smoky” flavour and a definite kick !!)

90% Halal Premium Thick Beef Burger 170g

(This thick burger is designed to give you the option to create your own mark on it. You will need to flatten the burger to your required thickness which will also give it a ragged and home made look. The quality of meat used will also leave your customers thinking that you have made it by hand)

90% Halal Premium Beef Burger 113g(As above but a conventional fast food

burger shape with the quality you would expect of a more expensive restaurant burger)

Both company websites will be updated too and will carry more news on upcoming celebratory events. For information www.qualityburgers.co.uk and www.sparkscatering.co.uk

John Sparks decision in 2000 to oversee the production of his own product was a brave one but one which has seen justified benefits and rewards and has created a platform for which both companies can use their knowledge and experience to break into new markets and continue to serve the Fast Food market with the best burger available to buy.

To contact us to discuss any of the above or to become a customer of either company contact us on 01982 551713.

Field trials are expected to be announced in June after the general election because of the

public sensitivity of the research, which is expected to be opposed by anti-GM campaigners.Researchers at the Sainsbury Laboratory, a government-funded research institute based in Norwich, have already conducted field tests on a GM potato with a single additional gene. They have now drawn up plans to insert up to eight genes into a commercially-popular variety of potato, such as Maris Piper or Desiree.

Three of the additional genes will be targeted against a fungal disease called late blight, which can devastate potato crops and costs UK farmers £60m a year in control measures, such as spraying with harmful pesticides up to 25 times a season. The previous field trial, which ended in 2012 after three years, tested a gene transferred into potatoes from wild Solanum plants, which are related to potatoes and tomatoes. The gene conferred limited resistance to late blight, which causes worldwide potato-crop losses of about £3.5bn a year. However, in order to prevent the fungus itself from developing resistance to the GM trait, it is now necessary to incorporate two further genes that will enable the GM crop to remain disease-resistant for many years to come, said Professor Jonathan Jones, the head of the project.“Deploying one gene is not enough because the pathogen tends to become resistant so we’re trying to deploy three different resistant genes at once that recognise different parts of the pathogen which would make it much harder for the pathogen to evolve,” Professor Jones said.“If we get funded, then we hope to begin planting next spring [in 2015],” he added.Public opposition to GM foods, especially in parts of Europe, could result in many years of wrangling over regulatory and safety issues before these new crops are seen in UK supermarkets or takeaways.“Even if there were no excessive regulatory barriers, it would take about eight to 10 years. It will be small-scale to start with because it takes time to bulk up,” Professor Jones said. Earlier field trials had to be protected by a 12ft-high fence and 24-hour security at a cost of £46,000, paid as a one-off supplement by the research council.
