Summary Table

Circuit Protection and the 17thEdition of the IEE Regulations

With the introduction of the 17th editionmajor changes come in to force, particularly in the area of Earth LeakageProtection. The following can only be asummary, full and detailed informationshould be obtained from the regulations.

Installations should be so designed as tooffer proper circuit discrimination so as toensure maximum safety/convenience inthe event of 1 circuit failure, this isparticularly important in the case oflighting circuits.

Summary Regulation 411.3.3:All socket outlets meant for use by anordinary person with a rated current notexceeding 20Amps should be protectedby a 30mA RCD.

Regulation 701.411.3.3:All circuits in a room with a fixed bath orshower should be protected by 1 or more30mA RCDs.

Regulation 522.6.6, 522.6.7 and 522.6.8:All cables buried beneath the plaster surfaceof a wall at less than 50mmshould be protected by 30mA RCDs.

Regulation 411.3.3:All cables installed in metal stud partitionwalls should be protected by 30mA RCDs.

The following summary table refers toadditional protection, generally this isadditional to MCBs – Fuses, i.e., earthleakage protection. Today SP RCBOs areseen as a convenient method of offeringboth overload and Earth leakage protectionfrom one device.
