Total Defence Day 2018 The school commemorated Total Defence Day on 14 February 2018. The theme for this year was “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”. Coincidentally, this year’s Total Defence Day (actual date being 15 February 2018) fell on Chinese New Year’s Eve. The backdrop of the fall of Singapore on Chinese New Year Day in 1942 is a timely reminder to us that we must never take our peace for granted. On 15 February 1942, the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese invaders at the former old Ford Factory in Bukit Timah. From then on, Singapore lived through one of the darkest periods of our history for 3 years and 8 months, during which we suffered from fear, hardship and misery under the Japanese Occupation. Hence every year, we observe Total Defence Day so that our dark past shall never be forgotten. In Huamin Primary School, our students participated in a variety of school-wide activities to understand more about the significance of this important day and how they can play a part in each of the 5 different defences: Military, Civil, Social, Economic and Psychological Defences. They understood and reinforced their learning on the 5 defences through the assembly programme, CCE and Social Studies lessons. During the assembly programme, we invited our teachers who are National Servicemen, Mr Albert Tham and Mr Chia Chong Seng, to share their personal stories during National Service to the students. The students were fascinated by their exciting experiences in the Air Force and the Navy respectively. During the students’ recesses, many exciting activities took place in the school foyer too. For example, students had the opportunity to look at wartime display photographs, as well as taste sweet potatoes, tapioca and porridge, which were the staple food during the Japanese Occupation. In line with the Education and Career Guidance (ECG) focus, students had fun trying out and taking photographs in the different uniforms of the various occupations within the Civil, Military and Economic Defences. The policemen from the Singapore Police Force and certified first-aiders also came to the school and conducted quizzes for the students during recess.

Many of our students had the opportunity to hop into the police vehicle and try out CPR for an authentic experience. It was delightful to see that the students had a fruitful time understanding about Total Defence Day and that it had instilled a sense of appreciation in our Huaminites and strengthened their Singapore Spirit. No one owes Singapore a living and we should never take peace for granted.

Part of being a Huaminite is to demonstrate the school values and habits even outside of school and we seek your support and help in enforcing these during the holidays and on normal school days. Together, we can help to develop our students into responsible, caring and compassionate Singaporeans. To have a better understanding of the school values and habits, you can find the information in your child's/ward's Student Handbook pages 11 and 26 respectively. The school rules and consequences from the Handbook have also been clearly communicated to all Huaminites, so it would be good to also ensure that they are ready (i.e. proper hairstyle, etc) for school in the following term. 8) Mobile Phone Policy and Good Habits The school has a mobile phone policy. Parents/Guardians who deem it necessary for their child/ward to have a mobile phone with them would have to adhere to the guidelines and remind their child/ward on the responsibility of proper mobile phone usage within and outside of the school compound. Alternatively, in any emergency, parents/guardians can call the school to contact their child/ward during school hours. 9) Remedial Programme – Dates for Term 2 To complement our teaching and learning programmes at the Lower, Middle and Upper Primary levels, the teachers will be conducting remedial lessons from Monday, 26 March 2018 (Term 2, Week 2) for selected P2 to P6 students only. Taking into consideration the varying needs of students and their well-being after school, supplementary lessons have been discontinued with effect from this year and only remedial lessons will take place. Please refer to the following table for the dates for remedial lessons for Term 2. More information will be provided nearer to the date.

Parenting Tips

Seven Huaminite Habits-To be proactive

How to help your child be more proactive

To be proactive is the first Huaminite Habit that will be introduced to students.

A proactive person refers to someone who is prepared even before something

happens or is able to create opportunities that may not be available or present

yet. This is in contrast to someone who is passive and tends to respond to

situations only after they have happened.

Why is being proactive important:

It teaches children that they can be in control of themselves and certain

situations.

It improves their self-esteem.

It encourages children to explore opportunities and foster their creativity which are vital in this age of innovation and change.

How to nurture this habit in children:

I. Encourage your child to explore new interests and hobbies.

Children can change their interests relatively quickly. For instance, a

child may initially be interested in making robots and then later to learning

how to do magic tricks instead. At this stage of their development, they

are exploring the different skills and abilities that they have. When your

child shows particular interest in a new activity, refrain from discouraging

them. Instead, explore with your child what is required to pursue the

activity and offer encouragement and support.

II. Address your child’s negative thoughts and statements about himself

and his ability.

At times, your child’s unpleasant life experiences and failures can make

him feel disheartened and occupied with self-doubt. When you observe

your child expressing negative statements about himself and his ability,

address it immediately and change these statements to more positive

ones. For instance, statements such as “I can’t do it anymore”, “I’m

useless” or “I always fail” can be changed to “I can do it” “I just need to

make some improvements” and “There are things that I am good at. I just

need to broaden my interests more.”

III. Be tolerant towards failures and mistakes

Like adults, children will make mistakes as they try new things or attempt

to materialize their new ideas. Sometimes, they may make obvious

mistakes that may cause adult observers to respond in an exasperated

or sarcastic manner. These comments that may seem small and

insignificant to adults, however, may have an adverse impact on the

child’s self-esteem. In order to avoid further criticisms, the child may

become less interested to try new things or take an active role in initiating

change due to fear of being judged. As such, do refrain from using harsh

criticisms. Instead, offer constructive feedback and give your child the

time and space to explore how he can improve on his plans.

Health Tips for Parents

More Calcium

Food high in calcium and vitamin D are essential for children who are growing. These nutrients give them the essential vitamins and minerals to grow healthy strong bones and teeth. Both of these nutrients work together.

I. Add low-fat or fat-free milk instead of water when cooking oatmeal and

hot cereal.

II. Dip fruits and vegetables into yogurt.

III. Make a smoothie with fruit, ice, and low-fat or fat-free milk.

IV. Make a salad with dark green, leafy vegetables. It is another source of

calcium.

V. Look for cereals fortified in calcium.

VI. Teach children to choose a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk instead of

soda.

VII. Serve broccoli or cooked, dry beans as a side dish for added calcium.

VIII. Toss tofu with added calcium into stir fry dishes

IX. Drink a glass of orange juice with added calcium.
