Chinese money

• Currency has been used in China since the end of the new stone age which was around 3500 years bc! Back in those times the money they used was made out of stone. It was later on in the ninth century when they invented paper money.

Cowry shells• Cowry shells are believed to be the earliest form

of currency used in central China about 3000 to 4500 years bc.

• Cowry is the common name for a group of small to large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family of cypraeidae. The word cowry is often used to refer primarily to the shells of these snails.

• Shell money has been found in some form or other in the following continents: America, Asia, Africa and Australia.

Currencies through the years• The following currencies have been used in china

from 1914 to the present:• Silver coins – 1914 to 1935• Fabi legal tender – 1935 to 1948• Custom gold units – 1930 to 1948• Northeastern provinces yuan – 1945 to 1948• Gold yuan - 1948 to 1949• Silver yuan – 1949 to 2000• Taiwan dollar – 1946 to the present

New chinese money• The latest edition of chinese currency is called renminbi.

Chinese currency is based around a decimal system and consists of paper money and coins. The smallest coin is 1 fen ,10 fen make up 1 Jiao, and 10 Jiao make up I yuan.

• The fifth edition of renminbi has been produced since 1999. Notes come in 8 denominations.
