The Contest Did you know that the Ice and Snow festival

has a contest? Well, it does! This power point will talk all about it. The contests are the Sculpture contest and the Ice Lantern contest. In the Ice Lantern Contest you have to make your lantern go the highest in the air to win. The people who make ice sculptures work really hard on their sculpture so they can win the sculpture contest. How to make a Ice Lantern1) Take and fill it with water2) Let the bucket a bucket freeze somewhere cold3) Turn it upside down and take the ice out4) Drill a hole in the ice 5) Put a candle in the hole, viola you have a ice lantern!

City of Ice

The people of China call Harbin the City of Ice. The festivals in Harbin are held the 5 of January to the end of February. However, the exhibits may open earlier and stay up longer. But not too long we don’t want the sculptures to melt! The festival is established in 1985. The first ice and snow festival was held 1963. People vist the ice and snow world at the opening ceremonony of the 2013 internaitional ice and snow festival in Harbin.

Ice and Snow

The most common ice sculpture is a castle. If you are brave enough you can make a huge snow sculpture. Snow is harder to carve than ice because it is more fragile. People that carve snow are working on one sculpture for about ten years. That is how hard it is! Some people that carve ice make slides which are open to the public. Tip if you go on the slide you will be freezing!

Fun Facts The ice and snow festival’s ice took at least one and a

half years or more to make.

The ice festival gets to about -40 degrees F! You have to wear at least two coats.

The ice and snow festival started in 1963.

2013 was the 29th annual festival.

In the ice they use L.E.D lights.

People say that when they go that are freezing but it is worth it.
