The End of the Dynasties
• Last dynasty was the Qing• Opium Wars with the British – Forced China to accept domination by foreign
powers– Sphere of influence
• Revolutions in 1911 and 1912 the Qing lost power completely
Civil War
• China dominated by Japan during WWII• Revolutionary movement following the war• Nationalist forces (Chiang Kai-shek) fought
Communist forces (Mao Zedong). • 1949 – Communists win, Nationalists flee to
set up gov’t in Taiwan
Mongolia’s Revolution
• Mongolia’s Communist leaders won independence from China in 1921.
Command vs. Market Economy
• Command economy: economic system based on government planning and control.
• Market economy: economy in which individual consumers and producers make all economic decisions.

• Introduced by Mao in 1958• Steel became the focus. Result?• More than 30 million Chinese died between
1958 and 1962!• Economic plan ignored the needs of the
