What differentiates Chime.in? Chime.in addresses two problems:
Relevance
Instead of getting random Tweets
from followers, users can select certain inter-
ests from each followers, effectively filtering
content that interests the user. Users can also
just follow particular interests or communities.
Monetization
Chime.in pays you to contribute. Fifty
percent of the revenue it earns from selling
advertisements on their profile pages. Individu-
als or brands that sell real estate themselves
can keep all of the proceeds from the ads.

created branded
pages with Chime.in
What is Chime.in? It has Twitter-like sharing with a cross between Face-
book status updates & blog postings, and the voting
mechanics of Reddit.
Chime.in is not intended to be a social network. CEO Bill
Gross dubbed it the “interest network”.
Unlike most social networks, Chime.in is organized
around subjects such as music, humor, and food (see
left), rather than people or friends. Similarities include a
newsfeed (or chime line), profile page and a system of
following other users. It improves upon existing social
media by weeding out noise that the user is not interest-
ed in and only shows content relevant to the user’s
interests. Users may build communities around their
favorite subjects and anyone can create topic pages,
which users can subscribe to updates about particular
chimes.
What are “chimes”? Short articles, up to 7,000 characters long with displays
including a headline, the first few sentences of the chime,
a piece of multimedia (image, video, link, poll), the user’s
profile picture, up to 7 interest tags and options for liking,
commenting and sharing. Threaded comments include,
Reddit style up or down voting systems that bring the
best comments to the top of the chime. Chimes can be
sent specifically to a user’s followers, communities, e-
mail, Facebook or Twitter postings.
Overall Review Chime.in is relatively new and generally unheard of
since most of the top communities have no more
than a few thousand members. The customization
isn’t as deep as a blogging website. Users with very
unique and specific interests will have a hard time
generating a lot of traffic into their chimes. Looking
through the entire website, there has not been sight
of any ads so the possibility of Chime.in paying for
content, especially it still being in the beta stage, may
either take a while or not happen at all. There were
mobile apps for the iPhone, Android and Black Berry
available, but the Apple App Store seems to not have
that in stock. Even with powerhouses such as Disney
and Universal trying to brand themselves, there isn’t
nearly enough traffic on this site to do what it envi-
sioned. Perhaps in time, UberMedia will make
Chime.in into what it originally intended to be.
