The growing toll of influenza has forced FraserHealth to declare the flu a “health hazard” andimpose restrictions at residential care facilities
throughout the valley.Fraser Health says 19 long-term care facilities have
reported outbreaks of the flu this year. That number istwice as many as reported in the previous three yearscombined. (An outbreak is classified as three peoplein the same area showing symptoms.)
And the spread of the flu isn’t just an inconvenience, according to health officials.
“We have seen a significant number of hospitaliza-tions and we have seen deaths,” said Dr. ElizabethBrodkin, a medical health officer and Fraser Health’smedical director for infection control.
Fraser Health said the number of flu-associatedfatalities is already three times the total from the pre-vious three years combined. And the number of hos-pitalizations has reached four times the average rate.
Brodkin says the flu occurs in cycles and this yearfollows several comparatively mild seasons.
That, she says, may have dulled people’s vigilanceagainst the flu.
“I think we’ve perhaps become a little complacentbecause of the mild seasons we’ve had and forgottenthat flu can be a very serious and even deadly dis-ease,” she said.
With the flu declared a health hazard, all those vis-iting a residential care or assisted living facility whohaven’t received the flu vaccine must wear a mask and“practise stringent hand hygiene.”
While some have questioned the efficacy of thisyear’s flu vaccine, Brodkin said that while it is not per-fect, it is “about as effective as past years’ vaccine.”
She said the vaccine is not a magic bullet that guar-antees a person will not get the flu; it just makes itmuch less likely.
“The number-one thing you can do to protect your-self is to get a flu shot,” she said.
The vaccine is most effective when combined witha younger person’s immune system. It is less effectiveon older people. (Despite prevalent myths, a personcannot get the flu from the most common vaccine, which uses dead influenza viruses that cannot infecta person. A second, live nasal vaccine, better protectschildren but is not offered to those with weakenedimmune systems).
Brodkin also encourages people to stay home if theyare sick and to practise good hand hygiene.

It appears that no train was involved inthe incident as emergency personnel con-tacted CN to notify them to stop trains.
Police say the incident also does notappear to be suspicious.
“It does not appear at this time thatthere is anything suspicious involvingthis incident; however, police are makingfurther enquiries this morning to confirmthis,” Wolbeck said in a statement.
“If we determine that this was a non-suspicious death, further communicationwill be coming from the BC Coroner Ser-vice regarding identity.”

After more than a decadeof trying to improve itslow graduation rate, theChilliwack school district
has turned to an unlikely team ofresearchers to shed light on theproblem: seven alternate-educationstudents whose own struggles inmainstream schools brought them tothe district’s Education Centre.
Ranging in age from 16 to 18, thestudents have teamed up with TrinityWestern University graduate studentFred Chou for an unusual researchstudy that will see them work as co-researchers, interviewing fellow EdCentre students and other youth whohave dropped out.
The approach is called participa-tory action research (PAR) and it’sdesigned to make sure marginalizedgroups take an active part in studiesabout them.
The method has been used withyouth before, but its potential forshaping education policy and pro-grams seems to be largely unexploredin B.C. and Canada, according to Eliz-abeth Saewyc, a UBC professor in theschool of nursing who has used PARextensively in public health studies ofhomeless and street-involved youth.
“It’s really critical because oftentimes education policy and programshave been designed without themin mind,” she said. “They have comefrom the goals of adults, the goals ofthe school district and administratorsand other people. While they mayhave great goals, they may not actu-ally create the right kinds of programsto achieve those goals unless they’reactually engaging the young people.”
Chou, whose experience withmarginalized young people includesa year working in a youth homelessshelter in Edmonton, was drawn toPAR’s potential for empowering hisco-researchers.
“It grows a lot of their own individu-al capacities, skills, something to addto their resume,” he said. “And it’s also
such a confidence booster.”Still, he was a bit taken aback by
the enthusiastic response when hefirst went to the Ed Centre to enlistvolunteers from the school’s PersonalProjects class.
“I was ready to pull out my bag oftricks in terms of marketing, but Ididn’t need to,” he said. “They were allvery enthusiastic. A lot of them hadvery poor experiences in the main-stream, and I think they really wantedto advocate.”
The students, almost all of whomhave spent signifi-cant periods of timenot going to schoolat all, agree.
“I had such a hardtime trying to goback to high schooland trying to getback into the flow ofthings that it mademe passionate about [the study],” 17-year-old Taylor Stevens told theTimes.“If I could change something about it,why not? Because I can’t be the onlykid going through this.”
Seventeen-year-old Jordan Florencealso hopes his involvement in theproject will make a difference.
“I want kids my age and kidsyounger than me to be able to get thechance that they need,” he said. “Iwant them to actually be able to getthe training wheels they need so theycan challenge the big bikes and reachtheir full potential.”
Curiosity was part of what drew 17-year-old ScottWilson to the study.
“I would like to know where every-body’s coming from and why thisprogram works and why it doesn’t,and not just to know but to try to helpthem succeed,” he said.
To 18-year-old Jake Harms, havingstudents interview other students andyouth who have dropped out seemslike the best way to get accurate infor-mation.
“They don’treally want to talkto adults,” he said.“Adults are from adifferent generation. They’re not going tounderstand.”
His observa-tion highlights onereason PAR is soeffective, accord-ing to Saewyc, whosays trust is usually
established quicker between peoplecloser in age.
“If I’m just some random researcherin a suit, who’s old enough to be theirmother or grandmother, there’s goingto be somewhat less trust that I willreally be able to get what they’re say-ing,” she said. “And the first thing thatwe need to have when it comes toestablishing trust is a sense that peo-ple get it, that people understand.”
The seven student co-researchers,who will earn course credits for theirinvolvement, trained for their role in thestudy from September to December.
This month they will start conduct-ing audio-recorded interviews, ask-ing three basic questions about theirinterviewees’ educational experienc-es: what helped, what hindered andwhat do they wish could be changedor added?
The recordings will be transcribedand the transcriptions analyzed forthemes for a report with recom-mendations that will be presented tothe school board and the ChilliwackSocial Research and Planning Council(CSRPC).
For Chou, it’s vital the students beinvolved in every part of the research, especially the presentations.
“I really want them to get the creditfor it,” he said, “and if their faces arethere and if they’re doing the presen-tation, then I feel like they’ll grow somuch. They’ll have that opportunityto voice their perspective and theperspective of the youth that they areinterviewing.”
The Chilliwack school district ispartnering with the CSRPC on threestudies designed to shed light on thelow local grad rate this year.
Besides Chou’s Ed Centre project,CSRPC is also overseeing a district-wide study by UFV researcher Kath-erineWatson that will gauge students’attitudes toward school, as well asanother study that will evaluate alter-nate education programs currentlyoffered in the district. All told, thestudies will cost about $55,500, withCSRPC kicking in $52,000 and FraserHealth providing $3,500.

NDP leader Adrian Dix will be in townSaturday as local New Democrats picktheir candidates for the May provin-
cial election.Gwen O’Mahony, MLA for Chilliwack-Hope,
will be acclaimed for that riding but there willbe a decision to be made for Chilliwack.
Vying for the nomination are former Chilli-wack Chamber of Commerce executivedirector Patti MacAhonic and Fraser Valley
Regional District (FVRD)Area A director DennisAdamson.
Adamson lives inYale andlost the Chilliwack-Hopenomination to O’Mahonybefore the 2012 byelection.
While he lives in the Fra-ser Canyon, the second-term FVRD director didlive in Chilliwack for seven
years and says in his campaign material “hehas already been working hard for you inregional matters.”
MacAhonic also doesn’t live in the ridingand has resided in the Chilliwack River Valleyfor 22 years. After being widowed, MacAhonicwas instrumental in pushing for a bill thatprotects survivors of workplace fatalities andtheir families. She then spent 15 years volun-teering with the Canadian Injured WorkersAlliance after which she was the executivedirector of the British Columbia Wildlife Fed-eration.
She was hired as executive director of the
Chamber on Nov. 1, 2011.MacAhonic asked the Chamber board for a
leave of absence until after the election if sheis nominated on Jan. 19.
On Jan. 7, the Chamber issued a pressrelease that said MacAhonic would be askedto tender her resignation if she wins thenomination. Some controversy and confu-sion came out of this, and a second Cham-ber release, issued Jan. 9, said the Chamberwill fully comply with the Election Act, whichrequires employers to grant leave during theelection period: April 16 to May 14.
Despite her request fora longer leave, MacAhonicsaid she was given an ulti-matum by Chamber boardpresident Kevin Gemmellto resign by 1 p.m. Jan. 9 orthe Chamber would issueits release.
On Jan. 10, she offered toresign if she wins the nomi-nation.
“I want to take the high road and thank theboard and staff for their professionalism, hardwork and dedication during my time withthem,” MacAhonic said in a press release.
O’Mahony will face off against BC Liberalcandidate Laurie Throness, and the winnerof the NDP nomination for Chilliwack will beopposed by John Martin.
The BC Conservatives have yet to announcecandidates for either riding.
◗ Dix will be the keynote speaker at the NDP’sJan. 19, 3 p.m. nomination meeting to be heldat the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.

Off-duty, barefoot andwe a r i n g o n l y h i sunderwear, Hope’s top
cop engaged in a long-run-ning 20-minute tussle with asuspected car thief in Rose-dale early Saturday morning.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Suki Manjwas speaking to homicideinvestigators about a sus-pected double-murder inHope just after 5 a.m. when,as he gazed out a top-floorwindow looking out over hisneighbourhood, he spotteda suspicious man pedal hisway down the street.
Manj’s neighbours hadexperienced several recentthefts-from-vehicles. Sowhen Manj saw the manpull into his driveway, he cutoff his phone conversation, told his wife—RCMP medialiaison Cpl. Tammy Holling-sworth—to call police, andbolted downstairs.
By the time Manj—wearingno shoes and still clad only inhis underwear—arrived out-side, the bike rider had bro-ken into his truck.
Manj said he proceeded toengage in a lengthy 20-min-ute fight with the thief. Hesaid he threw several “closed-fist strikes” while attemptingto retain the combative man.
“Every time I got him con-
trolled, he would strugglefree,” Manj said. “He wasdefinitely in fear of beingarrested.”
The tussle proceededdown the street and endedup in a neighbour’s driveway.Eventually, he got assistancefrom neighbours, whose helpallowed Manj to retreat intohis home and dress.
Eventually,on-dutyMount-ies arrived on scene. The sus-pect, a 25-year-old man fromChilliwack, was later releasedand will appear in court inFebruary.
Manj and Hollingswortheach suffered frost-bite ontheir feet. Manj also sus-tained severely pulled backmuscles, according to theRCMP.
Police are thanking thepublic for their help.
“This area has been hit veryhard with property crimerecently and the communitythere had a vested interest inapprehending the suspect,”RCMP spokesperson Const.Tracy Wolbeck said in a pressrelease.
“Neighbours and the com-munity at large have a higherexpectation of police officerswhether on- or off-duty. Thisis an example of that expec-tation being met. These offi-cers engaged the suspectdespite the potential dangerto themselves.”

The roller derby community is rallyingaround a local roller girl who has lost aleg, multiple toes and fingers to a life-
threatening bacterial infection. On Nov. 17, Julie Barr, an Abbotsford
mother of two who skates with Chilliwack’sVoodoo Derby Dollz, contracted an aggres-sive group A streptococcal infection thatforced her onto life support for two weeksjust before Christmas.
As part of her life-and-death brush withthe deadly bacteria, she was given medica-tion that caused her extremities to lose cir-culation, and just before Christmas doctorswere forced to amputate her left leg mid-calf.
She now faces the loss of toes from herright foot as well as parts of her fingers andhas had to undergo kidney dialysis.
To help their fallen sister, the Voodoo Der-by Dollz will host a fundraising scrimmagefor Barr, a.k.a. Sheila Hurt-U, at the Ag-RecCentre in Abbotsford this Saturday (Jan. 19).
“We need to get her house wheelchairaccessible,” Derby Dollz captain MelissaSaumur, a.k.a. Spanky Spitfire, said, “andthis year alone she’s going to need three orfour prosthetic legs because, as the stumpshrinks, you need new legs. Her husbandworks. She’s got two young kids at home, sowhen she comes home she’s going to needhelp cooking, cleaning, that kind of stuff.”
Funds are also needed to convert theBarr’s car from a standard to an automatic.
But support from the “derby-verse” isalready flooding in, Saumur said, withsix Fraser Valley leagues (the Dollz, RidgeMeadow Roller Derby, Reign Valley Vix-ens, NWO Rollergirls and The Free Agents)pitching in to cover the cost of the venue.
Organizers are also collecting donationsand registrations from leagues all over B.C.and from as far away as Ontario and Alaska,Saumur said.
“My mind is absolutely blown,” Saumursaid. “I have skaters coming from Portland,Oregon. I have just shy of 80 skaters regis-tered, and the prize donations have beenjust crazy.”
But it’s not just roller girls stepping up tohelp.
Belfor Property Restoration branch manag-er Scott Williams heard about Barr’s strugglesfrom one of his carpenters, Brandon Wright, whose wife Sophia skates with the Dollz.
As well as donating $500 and items forthe fundraiser’s by-donation draws, Belfor’sAbbotsford branch will donate free labourto make whatever modification Barr needson her home once she is released from hos-pital.
The company co-ordinated a similarvolunteer building project for a Chilliwackfamily (the Drews) last year.
“Julie’s situation immediately remindedme of what we did last year and the differ-ence that it made for so many people, bothin our company and in the Chilliwack com-munity,” Williams said. “This is anotheropportunity to make a difference and togive back where we’ve been really blessed.”
The co-ed scrimmage Saturday will startat 2:30 p.m. and feature four 30-minuteperiods, raffles, a silent auction, music, avendors village and more.
The cost is $25 for skaters; spectators getin by-donation.
To donate raffle and silent-auction items, email [email protected]. Direct dona-tions can be made to TD Canada Trust 0274,account 6445026. Email transfers can besent to [email protected] or [email protected].

I’m not greedy—at least, I don’tthink I am.And I recognize that the work I
do is far less important than slap-ping a lump of rubber across asheet of frozen water.
That’s why I would happily sitout the rest of my season—until, say, the warm weather returns inMay or June—for a lot less than$7.3 million.
All things considered, I’d seri-ously consider accepting as littleas a paltry one million to stayaway from the office.
I would even promise not tocomplain—publicly.
It would be a hardship, but onethat I’d be willing to accept for thesake of the team.
The Montreal Canadiens’ deci-sion to pay Scott Gomez a solidseven-figure bonus to keep hisuniform clean and pressed—per-manently—has generated a lotof buzz, both negative and posi-tive (on the negative side, a lot ofpeople don’t like it, and the restare positive they don’t like it).
But the whole icy issue hasbeen quickly buried beneath anavalanche of misunderstanding.
What’s wrong with paying a guynot to play, er, work, er, whatever?
For instance, farmers in the1930s were paid not to growwheat after it was determinedthat growing wheat was part ofthe cause of the infamous DustBowl.
And Scott Gomez’s on-ice sta-tistics have been growing dust at
an alarming rate. That’s also why it would have
been dangerous to send him downto the Canadien’s farm team, andthe Canadiens club has appointedhim to grow moss instead.
Perhaps the most remarkablething to me is that people careat all.
By people, of course, I mean“hockey fans,” even though bymany definitions it requires acertain level of intelligence to becounted among the species sub-set “people.”
Here’s reality: just days ago itseemed as though hockey fanswere reacting rationally to thedespicable way they were beingtreated by both the NHL manage-ment and professional hockeyplayers (although, I feel I shouldinsert here that “professionalplayers”—in any sport—hasalways struck me as an oxymoronon the order of “military intelli-gence” or “postal service”).
Fans were fed up.They were mad as hell and
weren’t going to take it anymore.Sports radio talk shows were
filled with angry voices express-ing angry sentiments formulated
by angry fans.Teams and their owners, the
angry voices voiced, had practi-cally priced themselves out ofthe market, and now were ask-ing—no, demanding!—more.
There was a growing recogni-tion among even the hardest-nosed fans that they were theones paying for the players’ fatpay cheques and the owners’growing margins.
Failure to provide expectedentertaining bouts of hockey wasan affront to every fan.
Talk show hosts—both radioand television—commiserated.until prospects for a rump of aseason materialized, after all.
And now we learn through Mr.Gomez that the only way to stopthem is to pay more.
Indeed, I suspect there areheads shaking out there in Read-ership Land right now, wonderingwhy nobody has offered to payme to not write this column.
Do you want this foolishnessto stop?
Would you like to sideline me?Permanently glue my butt to thebench? Teach me a lesson I won’tsoon forget?
No problem! Just show me themoney!
Small denominations and allunmarked bills, please.
And the worse you feel I havetreated you, the more I expectyou to pay.◗ Bob Groeneveld is editor of theLangley Advance.
Now’s thetime to makea new ruleNow is the time for the BC Liberals to
steal some ideas that members ofthe Opposition like to raise before
an election, and then conveniently forgetif and when they are successful at forminggovernment.
Premier Christy Clark is in the perfectposition to act on some of the kinds of ideasthat politicians prefer to maintain within therealm of study and discussion—the kinds ofthings that politicians like to promise beforean election, but tend to slip from their mem-ories after the votes are counted.
After all, the BC Liberals can’t seriously bethinking that they’ll still be on the govern-ment side of the legislature when the elec-tion dust settles this May.
They don’t have to worry about insti-tuting important legislation that may beunpalatable to voters, because frankly, anoverwhelming number of voters alreadyfind the BC Liberals unpalatable anyway.
And for the same reason, they don’t haveto worry whether they will be boxing them-selves in by making rules now that they’llregret having to follow later.
In fact, they have a rare opportunity todo something that should have been donelong ago—and the best part is that theycould saddle the (probably) incoming NDPgovernment with its own suggestion.
The B.C. NDP is calling for provinciallegislation prohibiting any governmentfrom using public money on advertising topat itself on the back—clearly in responseto the millions of tax dollars that the BCLiberal government is spending to promoteits own programs and put a positive spinon some rather questionable labour andgeneral economic statistics.
We all know it’s mostly a political ploy onthe part of the NDP—and a ploy that hasteeth, because ordinary citizens are trulyfed up with the waste of their tax money insuch an obtuse fashion.
But if the Clark government were tointroduce and pass such legislation beforeMay, the incoming NDP government wouldbe forced to abide by the very restraint theyare calling for now, instead of convenientlyforgetting about it after they are in charge.
No loss to the BC Liberals—and the realwinners would be the taxpaying public.

Editor:As a former reporter and
editor for two communitynewspapers and as a com-munications specialist fortwo large energy corpora-tions, may I complimentChilliwackTimes reporterPaul J. Henderson for hiswell-written and balancedarticle, “Even more oil couldflow through Abbotsford”(AbbotsfordTimes, Tuesday,Jan. 15, 2013, Page A4.)
However, with respect toparagraph eight, “The issueof oil transportation . . .” mayI point out that the KinderMorgan storage containerat the company’s SumasMountain “tank farm” didnot fail (April 3, 2012). To beprecise—which is how thereporter should have wordedthe sentence in order to showthat his reporting/writing wastotally objective and unbi-ased—the sentence shouldhave explained that a numberof operational mistakes weremade that caused the spill of110,000 litres (24,000 gallonsor what would fill an averagebackyard swimming pool).
Those mistakes were:1. a roof drain valve on a
tank was left open when itshould have been closed;
2. an external nozzle andthe valve were not winterizedor insulated, which causedthe water in the system tofreeze and the pipe flangegasket to fail;
3. the control centre opera-tor did not respond to alarmsin the prescribed manner;
4. there were improperalarm settings in the SCADAsystem that collects and ana-lyzes the data that flows intothe control system.
The storage container didnot “fail,” as the reporter hascited, as that would lenditself to readers’ visions ofcatastrophic damage withmillions of litres of oil previ-ously stored in the large tankscascading down the slopes ofSumas Mountain surging intothe FraserValley. There werea number of minor and moreserious operational errorsmade that Kinder Morgansubsequently attended to atthe direction of the NationalEnergy Board in order to pre-vent the recurrence of suchan incident.
As to the “Strong odours(that) lingered through theday . . .” the reporter shouldhave worded it as “nui-sance” odours that may havebothered people, such asthe exhaust from any of the
region’s many diesel buses orvehicles. If I recall properly,no one was hurt or killed andno private property was dam-aged and there was no threatof any kind to the public atlarge. Residents were advised,as were school children, tostay indoors until evaporationand dissipation by the windhad rendered the gaseousstate of the oil totally harm-less within a few hours.
As for the concludingthree paragraphs concerningopposition to the expan-sion of the Kinder Morganpipeline, it would be advanta-geous if your reporter couldelaborate on:
1. the concern that oppo-nents to the KM project haveregarding the increase in therisk of tar sands oil that couldaffect local aquifers;
2. the furtherance of risk toocean ecosystems and localbusinesses by increased tank-er flow in Burrard Inlet.
In light of the advancementsmade in oil transmission/pipeline engineering —including tanker transport—during the past two decades, could these nameless indi-viduals or groups present theircredentials in making suchgross sumnatory statements?Hyperbolic statements dolittle to give opposition criticsany credibility but only havemore sensible people clas-sifying them as Chicken Littleaficionados. What risk analy-ses have these people/groupscarried out?
As for Ms. Sheila Muxlowof the FraserValley anti-pipe-line group PIPE UP, couldyour reporter also recallwhat engineering creden-tials this former activist inthe Alberta oil tar sands hasseeing that her educationalbackground is only havingearned a liberal arts diplomafrom the University of theFraserValley and a bachelor’sdegree in InternationalRelations and Globalization
Studies from the Universityof Ottawa? Being a directorof the Sierra Club of Canada -Prairie Chapter and a regionalorganizer for the Council ofCanadians does not auto-matically strike me as beingthe most redoubtable quali-fications to challenge KinderMorgan’s proposal.
G.E. MacDonellAbbotsford
Shedding somelight on vandalsEditor:
I was catching up on read-ing some of the local papersand read the article aboutPromontory school beingvandalized once again.
Mrs. Carradice said that itwas best to keep the schoolsin darkness because in heropinion the damage wasbeing done by kids trying toentertain their peers and ifit was too dark for them tosee, then they did not havean audience. I had thoughtMrs. Carradice was hired forhuman resources when shecame to our district, thenswitched to finance, but I amnot sure when she took onthe role of crime reductionspecialist. I somehow thoughtthe RCMP were more of theexperts in this field.
Not many years ago theRCMP did a walk aroundat CSS and had them addlights to the side of the schoolbecause it was so dark and itopened it up to crime beingcommitted. It seems to meif the school is lit up that itwould be more likely thatit would deter crime as theRCMP suggested at CSS andalso allow those living aroundthe school or driving by toreport anything they maysee that is suspicious to thepolice.

BY REV. WILLEM H. VAN DE WALLCooke’s Presbyterian Church
It was in the month of October,five-year-old Abby asked hermother how long it was until
Christmas. Each day her mom had to
answer the same question overand over again as they counted thedays off.
On Christmas Day Abby’s momclosed her eyes and whispered,“Thank goodness, it’s finallyhere.” Guess what happened theday after Christmas? Abby asked,“Mommy, how long before wehave Christmas again?”
It seems that much of our life isspent waiting. In a small sense wewait in line for a vanilla latte, wewait for our car to fill up with gas,we wait for the cable guy to showup between 8 and 12 and thenwhen it’s closer to 12:30 he showsup.
In a bigger sense we wait to meetthe man of our dreams, we waitnine months for our baby to beborn, we wait for a job promotionor a pay increase. Waiting is a factof life on earth and most often wesee it as a curse.
Many people don’t regardIsaiah’s words as a comfort whenhe talked about waiting on the
Lord. In Isaiah 40: 31 we read, “Butthey that wait upon the Lord shallrenew their strength; they shallmount up with wings as eagles.”How can that be a blessing to waitfor God to answer us?
The key to God’s blessings inwaiting is to be found in the word,“renew.” Renew comes from theLatin word “renovare”, meaning“again.” To make again new or tomake over is what God had in storefor His people in distress. Theywere in exile in Babylon and wait-ed so long for deliverance. In theend their waiting was rewarded.
The life story of Joni Earecksonis one that always speaks to me.
She was just 17 years old when shebroke her neck in a diving accidentin 1967. She was left paralyzed forthe rest of her life, and had monthsand months of therapy.
Later she gave her testimony andsaid, “God used time to bring meto the highest level of my spiritual-ity. As much as I rebelled, He knewhow long it had to take for me toarrive at the right place in my life.”
We should see each day on earthas an opportunity to be renewed. There is no person on earth that issupposed to stay the same as whathe has been a year before. Let’swait and see what God will do inour lives through all the opportu-
nities that He will bring before usin 2013.
But we have to understand, towait upon the Lord doesn’t meanthat we can sit back. No, in ourdaily lives we have to strive to doour best in our personal lives, inour family lives, in our communityand the world.
Our lives are God given gifts andwe have to use it to the best of ourabilities.

Fresh on the heels of twoCanadian Folk Musicnominations and chart-topping radio play with her
new album “Grandma’s Rules forDrinking,” Annie Lou will be bring-ing original string-band music onher CD release tour to the HarrisonMemorial Hall, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m.
Annie Lou is built around theoriginal songwriting of Anne LouiseGenest, who spent 20 years livingin theYukon woods. Now relocatedto the balmier shores ofVancouverIsland, Genest carries the spirit ofan old storyteller inside her, andthis voice, mixed with the string-band sounds of fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and upright bass, traces ajourney through days gone by to the
here and now.Genest founded Annie Lou after
finding herself drawn to old timemountain and traditional countrymusic. It was in these older musicaltraditions that she found her museand set out to explore her originalmusic in the context of old timestring-band sounds.
“This music has a profound edgeto it—there in the voices and in theplaying is the lament we all carry aspeople trying to get by in this beauti-ful, terrible world,” says Genest. “Joyand grief are two sides of the samecoin. The older music expresses thattension so perfectly.”
Genest’s first outing as Annie Loubrought 2010 Juno andWesternCanadian Music Association nomi-
nations. This latest release, “Grand-ma’s Rules for Drinking,” broughtnominations for English Songwriterof theYear and Solo Artist of theYearat the 2012 Canadian Folk MusicAwards.
The album was at the top of theInternational Folk DJ charts forNovember, taking the number oneand number two spots for top songs,as well as the top Canadian albumspot, coming in at number two onthe international list in a tie with IrisDement.
“Grandma’s Rules for Drinking”features beautifully crafted songsthat range from rousing and boister-ous to gentle and poignant. Theymap a homescape of hard-drinkinggrandmas, rural dancehalls, bluecollar fashions and the deep snowsand silences of a Canadian winter.
Touring with Annie Lou are someof Canada’s finest acoustic musi-cians, including Genest (guitar, banjo, vocals), with Kim Barlow(banjo, guitar, vocals), Andrew Col-lins on mandolin, fiddle, and vocals
and Max Heineman on doublebass and vocals. Collins, a mul-tiple Juno nominee and foundingmember of some of Canada’s mostcelebrated string bands (includingThe Creaking Tree String Quartet)is an accomplished composer andmulti-instrumentalist. Heineman isa vocalist and bass player known forhis work with The Foggy HogtownBoys, and Barlow is a well knownJuno nominated singer-songwriter.
◗ Annie Lou is Jan. 26 at the HarrisonMemorial Hall.Tickets are $22 andcan be purchased by phone at 604-796-3664, online at www.harrisonfes-tival.com or in person at the RangerStation Art Gallery in Harrison, orAgassiz Shoppers Drug Mart.

Then this is a day you must experience!!!
Laura van Dernoot Lipsky will offer a compelling mix of personal insight, cutting edge research, and humor to help us understand the cumulative toll ofbeing exposed to suffering over time and gain concrete skills to reconcile it.
Participants are welcome from all professional disciplines and lifecircumstances.
We are pleased to offer Continuing Education Credit for those who request it:CEUs for all disciplines (i.e. legal, medical, social work, etc.)

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Jan. 20 - Jan. 26, 2013★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks aheadbring social joys, popularity, entertainment, lightromance, group activities and wish fulfillment – in aneven stronger dose than most Januaries/Februaries.Life seems worthwhile again! Though the pressureis off at work, bosses still favour you, so a momentof socializing with them (say Monday, Tuesday) can’thurt. Sunday’s for shopping – early, before ten.Travel, paperwork, casual friends, errands and variety fillMonday/Tuesday – be curious. Head for homeWednesday eve to Friday: be sluggish, recuperate, nurture family. Romance crescendos Saturday.
Taurus April 20-May 20: An ambitious monthbegins. Your energy and magnetism are tops Sunday, but there’s little worth doing. Charge after moneyand possessions Monday/Tuesday – a great twodays for investments, wiping out debt and sensualgratification. Your career and social reputation facea lucky opening. Trips, errands, paperwork andcasual friends/siblings fill Wednesday eve to Friday:good mixes with bad, so be on your toes. Legal andgovernmental zones might not go well, but yourcareer faces even more opportunity, If you havean ambitious hunch, act on it without delay. Home, family Saturday.
Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead featureintellectual activities, far travel, love and weddings, cultural projects, higher learning, religion, philosophy, insurance and statistics. The small of these willproceed swiftly, but the big is sluggish, will grow Jan.30 onward. Retreat and rest Sunday: DON’T handlesharp equipment. Your energy, magnetism, sense oftiming and effectiveness soar Monday/Tuesday: startnew projects, declare your love, see and be seen(and heard!). Chase money Wednesday eve to Fridaynoon: open doors and barriers mingle: buy cautiously.Errands and friends, Saturday.
Cancer June 21-July 22: The month aheadfeatures sex, intimacy, high finance (investments, debt, etc.) mysteries and research, health diagnosis, lifestyle changes, commitment and consequence. This area is super-charged now; testosterone is high;so is human attraction. You could be tempted to stray.Investing in (or researching in) your career can yieldbenefits. Sunday’s friendly, happy, but avoid practicalgoals. Retreat to rest, plan, and fulfill old obligationsMonday/Tuesday: you might receive a “gift” foryour charitable or spiritual efforts. Your energy andcharisma soar Wednesday eve to Friday.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The weeks ahead emphasizerelationships, opportunity and opposition, negotiation, dealings with the public, relocation possibilities andfresh new horizons. You feel ambitious Sunday, but anice rest will gain more. Your popularity rises Mondayto Wednesday. Social delights, light romance, entertainment, optimism and wish fulfillment flowin. Someone you meet or woo could be a potential, viable life mate. Retreat Wednesday night to Friday:rest, contemplate, plan, be spiritual, charitable.Your energy, charisma and timing soar Saturday– approach someone to solve a problem.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sunday’s mellow, loving, but don’t start major projects – contemplate, orread. Be ambitious Monday to Wednesday – greatluck accompanies you. A month of work and healthconcerns has just begun (Jan. 19) and this dovetailssplendidly with your career, prestige and statusdesires. Monday/Tuesday (not so much Wednesday)are one of the prime intervals in this trend – if youwork eagerly, you gain. Approach higher-ups with aplan or proposal those two days. Friends, popularityand optimism visit you Thursday/Friday. Retreatfor some “down time” Saturday. Contemplate lovebarriers.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of romance, creativity, of pleasure, charming children andspeculative urges starts now. Indulge some of thosespeculative urges – you’re on a winning streak! There will be a bump, especially around Jan. 30 (nextweek) – one that might raise the problem of moneyor unequal socio-economic positions. And in general,if you want to turn love into living (i.e., co-habitation)or marriage, you face problems involving domesticity:where you live, or step-kids, etc. Still, you couldhardly pick a better time this decade, to love andmate! Monday/Tuesday show how/why. Lucky!
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Until late February, examine your relationships and projects – jettisonthe old, stale and unworkable, to make room for thenew little green shoots that you now must nurture.Err on the side of gentleness in this, for you aretemperamental all January in domestic and othersituations – “dumping someone” roughly can createa long-term enemy. At home, kindness is key. Ingardening, go light on fertilizer. Sunday’s intriguingbut without result. Sexual urges, mysteries, highfinance, investments, fill Monday-Wednesday –luckily so! Mellow thoughts late week. Be ambitiousSaturday.
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks aheadfill with casual friends, siblings, errands, short trips, communications, details, reports and paperwork. It’s a very busy but not terribly important time. Send“love letters” over the two weeks ahead, both literallyand metaphorically (e.g., the right glance or tone ofvoice is a “letter” also). Tackle routine chores Sunday– nothing big. Relationships excite and are splendidlylucky Monday/Tuesday – be eager to join, diplomatic, flexible: others hold the power. Deeper themes – sex, intimacy, financial commitments – need caution lateweek. Mellow joy Saturday.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The month aheadfeatures money and possessions. You have alreadyexperienced heightened money flows since lateDecember: now these become more serious, as your“net worth” is affected. So it’s very important to stopuseless, nervous or frivolous outflows, and to invest, ifyou do, carefully. The best time to invest for machinery, tools, work is Monday/Tuesday – two great days toapply for employment or begin a project, also. Thebest time for other types of investment (or reducingdebt) is January 27. Sunday’s beautiful but useless.Relationships demand care Thursday/Friday.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, effectiveness, timing and charisma reach a yearlyhigh over the next few weeks. Start importantprojects, see and be seen, vie for romance (one ofthe bigger ones of your life seems likely to arrive,or has arrived, between June 2012 and June 2013).Ask favours, they’ll be granted. Sunday’s for rest, period. Romance, a creative surge, charming kids, speculative success, fill a splendidly lucky Monday/Tuesday (and Wednesday, but with little result). Tacklechores Thursday/Friday – keep an eye on safety.Relationships contain a hidden barrier Saturday.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Withdraw mildly nowto late February. This is your recuperation time ofyear: rest, protect your health, contemplate whereyou stand now and make plans for future action. Becharitable, spiritual – it will come back to you. Youfeel like visiting or communicating Sunday: littleresult. Charge into domestic, real estate, gardening, nutrition, children, security and retirement zonesMonday/Tuesday – you’ll succeed, in major ways!Romantic notions, creative urges and pleasure drivesswell Thursday/Friday, but you might be wise to letthese remain notions only.
