The Children’s Scholarship Fund aims to maximize educational opportunity for all children: for those in need by offering tuition assistance in grades K-8 for alternatives to faltering conventional

schools, and for all children by supporting and cultivating education reform and parental choice efforts.

Most sincerely and gratefully,

Darla M. RomfoPresident & COO

If any two words capture both the mission and impact of Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF), they are opportunity and hope. Since our inception in 1998, CSF has awarded scholarships worth more than half a billion dollars to 139,000 children nationwide. In

doing so, we have given every CSF Scholar the opportunity to attend the school that best meets their needs. And we have offered CSF Scholars and their families hope for a brighter future.

Fittingly, Opportunity and Hope: Transforming Children’s Lives through Scholarships is the title of a new book by journalist and author Naomi Schaefer Riley. In this book, Ms. Riley chronicles the lives of ten young men and women whose scholarships gave them access to the tools and opportunities they needed to succeed and fulfill their potential. You will get a taste of their stories in this report, and if you want more than a taste, call me and I’ll send you a copy of the book!

The successes these young people are already enjoying despite their humble beginnings can make us all hopeful that the relatively small investment of a CSF scholarship, combined with the family’s own contribution, can change a child’s life trajectory for the better.

Thank you very much. Through your support, you are giving opportunity and hope to thousands of CSF Scholars and their families.

Cathiana VitalScholarship Fund for Inner-City Children alum (Newark, NJ), Gates Millennial Scholar, Syracuse University graduate (BS and MS), and associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

One of the most important lessons that Cathiana learned from her teachers at Our Lady Help of Christians is “putting myself in others’ shoes.” At the end of what are often her very long days on the job, Cathiana always offers to stay later to help. “I know you’re going to be working for another five hours. Is there something I can help you with so you can only work three extra hours today?”

SilaS FaRlEYCSF-Charlotte alum, graduate of the Professional Children’s School and School of American Ballet, and current member of the New York City Ballet.

“I’ve been incredibly blessed. I can’t imagine being who I am apart from the Children’s Scholarship Fund because CSF put me in the settings where a whole village of nurturers trained me to be the person I am.”

alEYSha taVERaSCSF New York alum, National Park Service Park Ranger, Manhattan College junior, and future high school teacher.

The atmosphere was not particularly strict, but “with every teacher we had, we knew what they expected of us. This is what we did every day. We had order. We had a schedule.” Her teachers in elementary school and high school, she says, “taught me how to be organized. This is where I’m owning my skills.”

• In Fiscal Year 2013, CSF and our partner programs distributed more than $42.4 million in scholarships for low-income children. CSF distributed nearly $23.3 million with the remaining $19.1 million raised in our local partner program communities.

• In 2014, CSF was awarded a three-star rating by Charity Navigator for exceeding or meeting industry standards for efficiency and fiscal responsibility.

• CSF was also awarded the “Best in America” Seal of Excellence by the Independent Charities of America for meeting the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. Fewer than 5 percent of U.S. charities meet these standards and earn the ICA Seal.

• Last October, CSF was honored with a Top-Rated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations. The Top-Rated Award was earned by receiving a large number of positive reviews from CSF volunteers, donors, and scholarship recipient families.

• Management and fundraising costs are funded by our board members and a few key donors, allowing 100 percent of other contributions to go directly to CSF scholarships.

Like many recipients of these scholarship programs, Mira spends some time every few months writing thank you notes to the donors. She says she wishes she could do more to support the program, but it probably won’t be possible until she finishes school. For now, writing these letters gives her a great feeling. “It’s that ‘Oh Wow’ moment. It feels good that I’m not alone like I thought I was.”

It is hard to imagine how someone like Nyawuor, who has lived through so much and who devotes so much of her time to others, can really have it in her to give back more. But she tells me: ”I think that because I was faced with different events in my life, I can help people who are faced with similar things.”
