M exico´s publishing industry has experienced continuous growth over the past few years, as evidenced by the number of

New Horizons Awards received by several Mexican publishers at the Bologna Book Fair.

In 2008, the National Chamber for the Mexican Publishing Industry (caniem) set up the Children and Young Adults´ Book Committee, comprising 24 publishing houses, both private and public, working jointly in the promotion of authors and illustrators.

This catalogue includes a brief selection of these publishing houses´ backlists. It provides an introduction to some of the works we consider most suitable for the sale of foreign rights.

to Deserve a bookMerecer un libroVicente Quirarte

A collection of short essays. A precise and poetic description of the book´s allies: paper, “which confronts us during the very first readings in a qui-et and solitary dialogue with ourselves.” The bookseller, not the container but “the people whose interests revolve around the creature called book; to offer, take care of, manage, and live off its transit honorably.” The library, which “doesn´t exist without visitors who justify their existence […] where every book is in sync with each desire.”

And the reader, “who develops not only the commitment to read but also to keep the book. Only then will the sol-itary pleasure of owning a book be equivalent to that of the author who wrote it and the editor who realized it.

Generational differences reflected in the everyday relationship between a grandchild and his grandfather are treated delicately and amusingly in this book. Federico the grandfather can put the record player on, but if an email has to be sent, who takes care of it? Federico the grandson, of course! The parents wonder who takes care of whom—if Federico grandson looks after Federico grandfather, or if it´s the other way around.

The “true” story about why the elephant has such a long trunk. One day the little elephant, who asked questions all the time, asks the rest of the animals, “What does a crocodile eat for dinner?” The little elephant begins a long journey in search of the answer. Artes De MéXiCo

A rtes de México began publishing over twenty-five years ago. During this period we have created a series of books and magazines that allow readers to reflect about Mexican culture from very diverse perspectives. Thus, for example, we have issued a collection about

our national symbols, which gives us a better understanding of who we are, how others perceive Mexico, and how this notion has influenced our fantasy. Our collection on national fiestas is equally important: each issue reveals Mexico’ s celebratory side, the clearest portrait of our country. These were all created with a single purpose in mind—to find pleasure in the contemplation of our culture, and to find even greater pleasure in understanding it.

A Huipil for Deathun huipil para la MuerteEsmeralda Ríos

One day, Lady Death was feeling lone-ly and thought that maybe if she had a pretty huipil she´d be able to make new friends. before, way before Antes, mucho antesAntonio Ramos Revillas & Armando Fonseca

This brief text is a beautiful evocation of childhood and maternal love. A mother talks to the little girl that lives in her belly about the beautiful world that awaits her, the same one she now lives in, and the one she once lived in during her childhood. Antonio Ra-mos´text is not only a story but it is also a lullaby of a sort. Armando Fon-seca´s illustrations give rhythm and enrich the language. The images defi-nitely support and embrace, just like the mother who´s reading it.

Antonio Ramos Revillas ◆ One of the country´s most important writers under the age of 40, accord-ing to Hay Festival, British Council, and conaculta ◆ His book, Mi abuelo el luchador (My Grandfather the Wrestler), obtained the Book Bank of Venezuela Award ◆ His novel, La guarida de las lechuzas (The Owl´s Lair), was granted the 2014 Cuatrogatos Foundation Award, The International Latino Book Award, and a mention in The White Ravens

Planet treloPlaneta treloAlberto Peraza & Víctor Manuel García Bernal

Trelo is a planet where an extremely tall woman, her very small husband, and all their children live. The coexist- ence of these characters on Earth is affected not only by their physical char-acteristics, but also by the lack of ap-propriate environmental conditions.

The particular style of Victor Garcia´s illustrations stand out for their ele-gance, technique, and textures which, along with the book format, achieve a harmonious visual unit with this story.

Alberto Peraza ceballos ◆ Poet and children´s book writer ◆ He has received awards and mentions in national and international com-petitions, such as Hermanos Loynaz, Ismaelillo, and Edad de Oro ◆ He has more than thirteen published books

Víctor Manuel García Bernal ◆ Craftsman, illustrator, furniture man-ufacturer, and graphic designer ◆ He has illustrated for many publi- shing houses ◆ He earned a special mention in the White Ravens International Youth Library Catalogue

i Hit you, you Hit Meyo te pego, tú me pegasAntonio Ramos Revillas & Amanda Mijangos

This book approaches the topic of phys-ical, verbal, and psychological abuse among children and adolescents. It brings the feelings and actions to light, both of the abuser, who enjoys intim-idating and submitting, and also of the abused, all from a poetic and intimate perspective. However, the roles of abus-er and abused aren´t permanent. They exchange throughout the course of life as their character develops.

Bar-tolomé´s poetry is illustrated with cloth creatures made by indigenous craftsmen from Chiapas called Tzotzil and Tzeltal. This is a journey to the original places where our elderly moth-er lives: nature.

women Are Human beingsLas mujeres son seres humanoslaura lecuona González & Jazmín Jotavé Velasco

We´re born a girl or a boy. We go to the bathroom where there’s either a figure with a skirt or one with pants. We dress up as cowboys or princesses. Being one way or the other seems very simple but if we dig deeper it´s actually a more complex issue that is full of strong vo-cal opinions either in favor or against it…but, in favor or against what? What is the difference between sex and gen-der? Is there more than one sex or gender? If so, who imposes them or how do we discover them? Do we de-cide or do others do it for us? If culture is the one that dictates how we ought to be, how is it that there are people who decide to switch genders or mar-ry people of their same sex? It´s not an easy subject but it´s a passionate

one and this is a good starting point.

the night of the batrachiansLa noche de los batraciosMartha Riva Palacio Obón& carlos Vélez

Ana arrives to an island along with her ailing mother. During her quest to make friends, she encounters Moé at a mangrove and they instantly become friends. Even though Moé seems harm-less at the beginning, she´s actually an ethereal and hungry creature who´s opened a door for other fanciful, mis-chievous, but potentially dangerous creatures to come into this world. However, the profound void because of her mother´s sickness and her con-dition of being a newcomer on the is-

land will be too much for Moé´s hun-ger, who´ll end up going back to where she came from but not before she and the other creatures cause havoc among the island´s inhabitants.

Goose, the main character of this story, has a self-sufficient personality that makes her disregard the friendship of other animals of the woods because she feels they are unnecessary. the Pirate Genieel genio pirataJaime Alfonso Sandoval & Manuel Monroy

Tomás finds a lamp from which a “pi-rate” genie appears to grant him wish-es, but they are low quality wishes. He offers knock offs and substitutes to everything he asks for. A t SELECTOR we feel proud to be a 100% Mexican company with over 60 years in the business. We´re a company dedicated to satisfying the need for non-specialized information with affordable books that expose current topics for the general public.

This editorial approach, combined with a group of authors who are true leaders of opinion, make SELECTOR´S titles a synonym of high quality. All of this is achieved because of our key positioning in sales outlets throughout the country and our distribution in Latin America´s main countries. SELECTOR innovated with a system of non-traditional retailers: superstores, department stores, pharmacies, coffee shops, restaurants, bus terminals, hotels, tobacco stores, airports, etc. A strategy that allowed SELECTOR to acquire the public´s liking. We are constantly inviting people to read, to the point where it´s become the motto for our name SÉ LECTOR (BE A READER).

One of their main qualities is to be inclusive and reach children who can´t see, hear, or have difficulty finding books in indigenous

languages. The most important thing for this publishing house is to promote reading, for which they conduct activities in isolated communities around Mexico. They do this because they believe that reading is the key to transforming generations to come.
