The GRUFFALO

Looks: Very stylized, all significant objects have clear black outlines, Relatively busy with central characters, diverse range of colours and shades to catch the eye.Picture technique: Painted. This gives it a disticnt style which appeals to the eye.Font: clear to read but slightly stylized, italics used on significant sentences, fair gaps between lines. As the age range is for more developed readers, there is a slight style on the wording and there isn’t as much of a diffusion of colour where text is.Text per page: Around 4-8 lines per page mix of easy to learn words and more complex words. So that the target audience doesn’t get overwhelmed by it’s numeracy.Product dimensions: 32 pages, size- 8.5x10.6 inches, large to fit a lot of illustration in with it.Creators: Julia Dohaldson and Axel SchefflerAge range: 5-8 years

Personal opinion: I remember reading this book as a child, and if someone told me to think of a children's book this would definitely be in the top 3. and that shows how successful it is, that even those that are older now, can still remember it. So I would like to replicate it, one of the things that I think kids reflected on was the fact that there was a pattern, all the animals would want to eat him, but get dissuaded by the thought of the Gruffalo, and then it twists at the end to give a happy ending.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar• Looks: very simple almost child like overlapping and under-lapping, diverse range of

colours, mostly bright, giving clear contrast with text and characters to background.• Picture technique: All painted with no need for the colours to be blocs and very

collage-y. gives te characters and objectsa very textured look.• Font: simple and clear to read, fair gaps between lines. This was most likely done

because of the target audience, as it is those who are only just starting to read it needs to be all these things otherwise they might not be able to understand it.

• Text per page: no more than three lines, not much text, very simple words, in plain areas of the page. This makes it easyer for the target audience to learn to read.

• Product dimensions: 26 pages, 17.9x13.1 cm. Enough to be sturdy and accessible. • Creators: Eric Carle• Age Range: 9 months- 2 years

• Personal Opinion: Again this is another book that would rate in my top 3 children’s book of all time. Again I need to reflect upon what made it so successful, one part was the simplicity of it. The pictures while done with a range of paints could be easily replicated by children. And again there is a pattern in this, book where the caterpillar keeps on eating bigger and more exotic fruit, with a twist at the end where he turns in to a butterfly.

Dear Zoo• Looks: Simple images that pop-out of the page and reveal different animals. Easy

for little eyes to see and get to understand the image.• Picture techniques: colouring pens, helpful if audience what to practice.• Font: Very large, simple, and easy to read text. Because it is for first time or early

readers, the text is very big and there is a big contrast between the black text and the white surrounding it. This is probably for the target audience as it is hard for them to differentiate anything more complex.

• Text per page: one line of a few simple words, reasonable gaps per line, usually in area of low or no illustration.

• Product dimensions: 18 Pages, 17.7x17.7. Sturdy and fits well in hand.• Creators: Rod Campbell• Age range: 1-4 years

Personal opinion: This would have to be the last in my top 3 favorite children's books. This book is one of the most basic books that I ever read, because It was designed for extremely young children, and this was successful because it was so simple it was easy for all ages of young children to get.
