From Our Pastor For the last fourteen years, one of my favorite days of the year has been Palm Sunday. It is the beginning of

Holy Week, and the end of Lent is in sight. But those aren’t the only reasons. For those fourteen years I was

stationed at Saint Agnes in Arlington. The Director of Music there was a wonderful man and a great singer,

Michael Vaughn. Michael is a truly gentle man, a man of great faith. Michael also has one of the most beautiful

voices that I have ever heard in a Church. Knowing the depth of his faith and the beauty of his soul just make his

voice all the more moving. Every Palm Sunday Michael would sing Jerusalem. That beautiful song, and

Michael’s powerful rendition of it, would make me feel as if I were present for Jesus’ triumphant entry into

Jerusalem. It would help to set the stage for what was about to unfold in the week ahead. Michael would sing

that song at three different Masses and I would make sure that I heard it every time.

This Sunday, Jesus does make his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and we are invited to make that entrance

by his side. Palm Sunday, however, is just the beginning of something. It is the beginning of the holiest time of

the Christian year. It begins Holy Week. Palm Sunday is an invitation to each one of us to, not only enter Jerusa-

lem with Jesus, but to make the journey through these most holy of days. On Thursday we will gather to remem-

ber the Last Supper. In the beautiful liturgy of that night, we will be invited to witness the great gift of the

Eucharist to the Church. On Good Friday we are asked to watch as our God shows us the depth of His love for

us as His only son lays down his life for each one of us. On Saturday we will wait as Our Lord rests in the

Tomb. On Sunday we will be present to celebrate the greatest event in human history, the Resurrection!

So begins Holy Week! I hope that you will join us as we commemorate the great acts of God that have led to

our salvation. In the bulletin, you will find the time for our Holy Week Liturgies. Please come, and please invite

others to come with you. I pray that this may be a blessed time for you and your family. I pray that this will be a

blessed time for our collaborative.

Our readings today are all too familiar. We know too well how the story ends. The challenge for us is to listen and ponder as if hearing for the first time. “…at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” The cost of discipleship is real. It demands that we be willing and ready to share His remarkable love for us with others. Will you trust that the Lord has given you a well-trained tongue to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them? Look for an opportunity this week to share your love of Christ with another.

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.
