Charles was in the Spanish American War. He was inCo. C, 1st. Regiment Volunteer Infantry. Cora's fatherwas Charles Phelps of Leicester, Vt.. Charles & Corawere married by Charles' father, Rev. Harvey Rickert.Charles spent a number of years in the Vermont NationalGuard. He was in Co.;C, 1st. Infantry. In 1910 he wasQuarter Master Sergt.. His brother Burton was Corporalin the same outfit. That year, their outfit was the firstcompany of the-Vermont National Guard to go on maneuversat Pine Camp, N.Y.. Charles Phelps was also in that samecompany. Charles Rickert was a large man and while inthe National Guard, his company gave him the name "BigHorse." He moved with his family to Elaine, Washingtonin 1911 and was mayor of that city for some years

VBurton Rickert or Burt as he was better known by, wasa blacksmith by trade having been taught by his olderCousin, William R. Rickert. Burt served in the Verm- wfcu-ront National Guard as Corporal in Company C, 1st. Inf-antry in 1910 along with his brother, Charles. Burtonmoved from Vermont to Buffalo, N.Y. in 1926. He char-ged his third wife with infidelity and received thedivorce on those grounds.

Burt was a blacksmith in West Salisbury, Vt.where he rented a house from Eugene Newton. Thatplace burned with most of the contents in the earlypart of Sept. of 1915. .

Burt then went to live in West Cornwall, Vt.where he again operated a blacksmith shop. Againbad luck struck as the blacksmith shop burned down.

Burt then went to a place on the highway betweenU.S. 7 and the North end of Lake Dunmore, in the Townof Salisbury where they lived until moving to Buffalo,N.Y.. Burt was well liked.

He died from an acci-dental fall down an embankment which fractured his skull.This happened at Bridlevale, Ore. and he died in routeto the hospital. Mrs. Lula A.
