ELDER ABUSE

The Queensland Government wants all Queenslanders to know “There’s no excuse for

elder abuse” and they are seeking our help to spread the word. Elder abuse is any act

within a relationship of trust which results in harm to an older person. Sadly, the

majority of elder abuse is committed by sons, daughters, spouses or grandchildren.

Posters are displayed at the Centre and these highlight three of the most common

types of abuse - skimming or stealing money, forced assets transfer and emotional or

psychological abuse. The brochure (enclosed with our Newsletter) is tailored to older

people experiencing abuse and includes case studies and key contact details.

MEDICAL REPORTS

Could you please mark your calendar on your next doctor’s appointment to ask for an update of your medical history. It is so important that we have up-to-date information on your files in case we need to phone an ambulance.

If your doctor could print out your medical diagnosis and your current medications it would be very helpful and could even save your life.

Just for fun ….

Two elderly friends were catching up and one was heard to say to the other “My memory is gone Mildred, so I have changed my password to “Incorrect. ” That way when I log in with the wrong password, the computer will tell me… “Your password is incorrect.”

Incontinence is not just an elderly person’s condition – it can occur to anyone at any age during their lives. Incontinence can often be treated and managed if identified in the early stages.

Women are more likely to be affected by incontinence than men. Some of the factors which increase the risk of continence in women include menopause, pregnancy, childbirth, already having children, being overweight and suffering from urinary tract infections. In men, incontinence can be related to prostate problems. About 60% of men are affected by incontinence after prostate cancer surgery. Other medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, constipation and chronic cough can cause or aggravate continence problems.

Understanding exactly the nature of incontinence is the first step.

It is important to realise that with help incontinence can usually be managed and in many cases it can be cured.

The condition manifests itself in different ways and some of the signs of poor or weak bladder or loss of urine control include –

frequency – wanting to go to the toilet frequently

nocturia – waking up to go to the toilet more than twice at night

urgency – sudden urges to go to the toilet

involuntary or unintentional loss of urine from the bladder – wetting yourself or wetting the bed.

Sufferers can help to reduce the impact of incontinence by following some simple steps and making lifestyle changes. Make sure you drink enough to stop becoming thirsty, but try to reduce your intake of drinks that have caffeine in them such as coffee, tea and some soft drinks. Also, limit your alcohol intake and don’t smoke. Keeping your weight at a healthy level is important as is eating plenty of fruit, vegetable and grains.

ISIS COMMUNITY CARE is designed to provide flexible CARE OPTIONS to the frail and elderly, younger people with disabilities and their carers. By offering a range of basic support services, the Community Care Service may provide an alternative to residential care, thereby assisting to maintain elderly or disabled people in their homes, within the community. Funding through the Community Home Support Program and the Queensland Community Care Program.

At just a few months of age: an infant can look at pictures, listen to your voice, and point to objects on pages. Guide your child by pointing to the pictures, and say the names of the various objects. By drawing attention to pictures and associating words with both pictures and real-world objects, your child will learn the importance of language.

Children learn to love the sound of language before they even notice the existence of printed words on a page. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. When the rhythm and melody of language become a part of a child’s life, learning to read will be a natural as learning to walk and talk. Even after children learn to read by themselves, it’s still important for you to read aloud together. Reading stories that are on their interest level, but beyond their reading level, you can stretch young readers’ understanding and motivate them to improve their skills.

1. Research shows that up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first 5 years.

2. Children learn best from the important people around them.

3. Babies and children love sharing stories. It’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

We enjoy cooking

Too many cooks spoil the broth! Not in this case, the children at OSHC chose to make gingerbread biscuits and cupcakes and finished them off with icing and decorations. Just the way they like them.

Recipe: Fairy Cakes

125g butter

2/3cup castor sugar

2 eggs

1 cup plain flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 tablespoons milk

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees C. Lay out 24 cup cake papers on a baking tray.

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Sift flour and baking powder into mixture and add milk. Mix thoroughly but do not beat. Place tablespoonful of mixture in each paper case. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until cooked.

Yum! Yum! Someone had to clean the bowl and Cayden was very will-ing to help out.

Incursion with Aunty Jenny

We celebrated NAIDOC with Aunty Jenny who visited us at OSHC and shared a special story and her drawing which we coloured in.

NAIDOC week, which is celebrated annually in the full first week of July, stands for ‘National Aboriginal and Islanders Day of Observance Committee’. The week began in the 1957 when Aboriginal organisations, state and federal governments and a number of church groups came together to support its formation. However, its roots can be traced back to the 1920s and the 1938 Day of Mourning march and conference.

Isis Outside School Hours Care is jointly funded by the Bundaberg Regional Council and the Department of Employment Education and Workplace Relations. Outside School Hours Care offers After School Care and Vacation Care. After School Care is available from 2.50pm to 5.50pm each school day.
