11..00 CChhiilldd ttoo CChhiilldd:: WWhhaatt iiss iitt??Child-to-Child (CtC) is an approach to health promotion andcommunity development that is led by children. It is basedon the belief that children can be actively involved in theircommunities and in solving community problems. CtCprojects involve children in activities that interest, challengeand empower them. In so doing, the approach "encouragesand enables children to play an active and responsible rolein the health and development of themselves, other children,their families and communities".1

In CtC projects, "health" is defined in broad terms andrefers to an individual’s overall sense of physical, mental,emotional and social well-being. "Community health" and"community development" refer to efforts made to improvethe physical, social, economic, political and environmentalconditions in which people live.

CtC projects aim to achieve positive change on three levels:

1. Communal impact on families, children, localprofessionals and others, including increased knowledgeand positive changes in health attitudes and behaviours,well as improved relations between adults and childrenor institutions and children.

2. Personal impact on children involved in the project,including increased knowledge and skills, improved self-confidence, and the development and strengthening offriendships and other relationships.

3. Professional impact on facilitators, including increasedrespect for children’s ideas and abilities and increaseduse of child-centred learning and teaching methods.

CtC projects have taken place in all of these differentsettings. In the UK, teachers, school nurses, youth workers,parents, community development officers and child careproviders have used the CtC approach to support children,aged 9-13 years old, in developing and initiatingcommunity projects and awareness campaigns about issuesof concern to them. For a group of around 30 children wehave found 3-5 adult facilitators optimum, as the facilitatorscan then provide more focused support during small groupwork.

This manual can be used to help you set up a project (seesection 9.0), plan the sessions, overcome problems andbarriers if and when they arise. It can also help you achieveyour priorities:

empowering because it enables children themselves to selecttheir own priority issues. In this way, CtC projects canbroaden community dialogue and include the views ofchildren in significant and important ways.

It is our hope that this manual will evolve, and that users willlet us know what information needs clarification and whatadditional information is required. Teachers can use the CtC approach to achieve manyCitizenship and Personal Hygiene and Social Educationobjectives. CtC activities can also be integrated into othersubject specific teaching, particularly English (Speaking andListening and Literacy Hour) and Numeracy.

School Nurses can use the CtC approach to further theirgoals of health promotion and education about issues suchas nutrition, healthy lifestyles, community development andrelationships.

Youth Workers, Community Development Officers andChild Care Providers can use the CtC approach to engagewith children on issues of concern to them and to activelyinvolve them in the development of solutions to communityproblems.

Parents can use the CtC approach to strengthen theirrelationships with their own and other children, to learnmore about classroom activities and learning methods, andto have fun and learn alongside children.

This manual outlines a structured process for working withchildren on projects that are child initiated and led. It isdeliberately structured in a broad manner in order thatchildren’s ideas and concerns form the framework withinwhich CtC projects take place. As adults, we often askchildren what they think about particular issues, but rarelydo we step back and ask them what things matter most tothem, what they think are the most pressing problems intheir community, and how they would like to be involved insolving them.

The CtC process outlined in this manual provides us with thetools to ask these more general and important questions.While CtC projects sometimes focus on specific issues suchas smoking, drug abuse and environmental care, we believethat the open nature of the CtC process is useful and

44..00 PPiillllaarrss ooff CCttCCTwo main pillars underlie the CtC process and its associatedactivities as we have used them in London: namely populareducation and child participation.

Popular education, or education for social change, is oneof the key theoretical pillars underlying the CtC approach. Firstarticulated by Paolo Friere in his literacy work with Brazilianpeasants, popular education has been used in both poor andrich countries as a tool to raise people’s awareness of howtheir personal experiences are linked with larger socialproblems. As an educational approach, it helps us to makesense of the world around us by placing our understandingand experience at the heart of learning. It is not about learning"expert knowledge" from others. Instead, it is about buildingon the knowledge that we already have to address issues thatare relevant to us. In this way, learning becomes easy.

33..00 BBrriieeff HHiissttoorryy ooff CChhiilldd ttooCChhiilldd

The CtC approach to health educationwas first introduced in 1978, followingthe Alma Ata Declaration on PrimaryHealth Care and in preparation for theInternational Year of the Child. It wasdeveloped by a team of health andeducation professionals at the Universityof London, with advice from prominent

international advisors, as a way for school-aged children tolearn about and pass on basic health messages to theirpeers and younger siblings. The underlying premise of theapproach is that children, if given the opportunity, can makeimportant contributions to the health and well-being ofthemselves and others. Today, it is estimated that more than250 CtC projects have taken place in more than 70countries worldwide.

Initially, CtC activities were designed for children in theworld’s poorest countries and were focused on primaryhealth care issues such as malaria and diarrhoea. However,by the early 1990s, recognition of the flexibility andappropriateness of the approach for children in othercontexts led to the adaptation and implementation of CtCprojects in Manchester, UK. In 1999, the National HealthService (NHS) chose to build upon this global and nationalexperience and to launch the first CtC projects in London.This work has taken place under the auspices of the HealthAction Zone of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham and todate projects have taken place in primary and secondaryschools, after-school clubs and summer play schemes. Thismanual is based on the experience of the first two years ofthis programme.

To be genuine and effective, child participation meanslistening to children and respecting their views and the wayin which they choose to express them. It involves recognisingand nurturing their strengths, interests and abilities throughthe provision of meaningful opportunities to contribute to theirown development and that of their peers, families andcommunities. In this way, child participation encouragesmutual learning between children and adults as well as theestablishment of respectful relationships across generations.

Adults have a crucial role to play in the promotion andfacilitation of child participation. If children are truly tobenefit from their involvement in community health anddevelopment activities then they need the support andguidance of caring adults who wish to ensure that childrenhave every opportunity to develop to his or her fullpotential. Children gain immense confidence andexperience from adults who are willing to facilitate theprocess of participation and to provide children with thetools they need to learn and contribute to their community.

Popular education is about people learning from oneanother. It is based on learners’ concerns and involves themin choosing what and how to learn. It is an educationalmodel in which there are no "experts" and everyoneteaches and everyone learns.

CtC is based on this model of learning. The approachbegins by drawing out children’s experiences and lookingfor shared patterns of experience and knowledge. Newinformation and ideas are then explored and integrated.Children practice various life skills (e.g. decision making,communication, team work), plan for and take action andthen reflect on what they have learned and how things havechanged as a result of their work. In this way, the CtCapproach facilitates children’s empowerment and inclusionin efforts to make a difference in the world around them.

Child participation is the second theoretical pillar of theCtC approach. In its broadest sense, child participationrefers to children playing a meaningful role in the worldaround them.

The principle of child participation is firmly rooted in theUnited Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC),which asserts that children have the right to participate as fullmembers of society. In short, the CRC recognises that childrenare not merely "adults in training", but people who are able toform and express opinions, to participate in decision-makingprocesses and to influence solutions. This recognition thatchildren have the right to be involved in decisions that affectthem means that community development programmes need tolearn from and engage with children on issues of concern tothem. This process involves children identifying problems intheir community and working to solve them. This view thatchildren have a valuable contribution to make to theimprovement of their communities underlies the CtC approach.

55..00 FFaacciilliittaattiioonn ooff CCttCCAs mentioned above, facilitation is animportant component of the CtC approach.The term "facilitation" comes from theFrench word facile, which means easy. Thejob of a facilitator is to make a processeasy for a group by planning in advance,listening well, and being flexible.

In CtC projects, adults support and guidechildren through the 6-step process. In so doing, facilitators’efforts are less focused on giving children new informationand facts and more on empowering them to learn through asystematic process. The role of a facilitator is thereforecritical to the CtC approach. Facilitators need to:

The CtC process begins with ice-breaker activities and co-operative games which build on the children’s group workskills and provide an opportunity to explore issues such astrust and the value of listening to others’ points of view. Thegames and activities in this step are designed to be fun andinformal discussions about them prepare the groundwork forthe rest of the project. The activities used in Step 1are a

leaflets, drama, puppet shows, etc). After they have decidedupon their message and target audience, and planned theiraction, they go out and do it!

Children evaluate the CtC process and activities at everystage in the six step cycle. Nevertheless, the final step isexplicitly intended to provide an opportunity for the childrento reflect on the process, what they have learned, what theyhave achieved, what they would do differently next timeand how they might sustain the action they have taken andbuild on the skills they have learnt. Project workers andothers, such as parents and teachers, who have beeninvolved in the process also contribute to the evaluation ofCtC projects.

Before beginning a CtC project, it is necessary to haveexplained the process to the children that you work with.Children, like adults, work better when they have an idea ofthe whole picture. It is helpful to discuss not only theimportant role that children can play in their communities,but also the other things that are possible in the project,such as:

Once the children have a good sense of what the project isabout, and have had a chance to ask any questions theymight have, it is best to give them the opportunity to say

valuable part of each step in the CtC process as they helpto ensure the ongoing comfort and co-operation of thegroup.

Facilitators ask children a focused question about the healthissues that they are concerned about or about the problemsthat they see in their community. Children then share withone another a whole range of issues and these arerecorded and then discussed.

From the list of issues generated in Step 2, children prioritiseone or two issues that they feel are most important andrelevant to them.

Once the children have decided on an issue, the next step isto find out what they already know about the subject andwhat additional information they would like to know.Children decide how to gather the required information.Examples include interviews with "experts", telephone calls,visiting libraries, conducting surveys and many otherapproaches. Throughout this step, children are supported inrecording the information that they gather so that they canuse it in their action plans.

SStteepp 55:: PPllaann aanndd TTaakkee AAccttiioonn

Drawing on the information that they have gathered in Step4, children decide how best to address the issue or situationthat they have chosen. There is a range of strategies thatthey might choose, including hands-on activities (e.g.clearing litter or building a play structure) and/ordissemination of health messages (e.g. through song, rap,

This step is designed to lay the foundation on which the restof the project will be built. One of the core aims of the CtCapproach is to strengthen children's life skills, of whichgroup work and exploring feelings are an essential part.Also, as much of the CtC process is based on group work, itis important that children learn these skills from the verybeginning and that they come to understand the CtCprocess and its 6 steps. Games, activities and discussionform the basis of this step.

There is a good range of resources available oncooperative games. You or the children may know somealready. Be creative! Using games that children alreadyknow can build their confidence and set the tone of mutuallearning that is an important part of the CtC process. Askthe children to teach you the games they like best and withtheir help, alter them if need be. All of the games andactivities listed are explained in detail in Section 11.

Activities and Games to Build Co-operation: Thesegroup work games can be a powerful tool for learning. Besure to discuss them with the children in order to reflect onthe things that helped - or hindered – their ability to worktogether during the game. The importance of skills they usedsuch as listening to each other, taking part, andcompromising can be highlighted.

In schools it is often notpossible to provide children with other activities on aregular basis. You can, however, ask the children whetherthey think the project sounds of interest to them and whetherthey have reservations about any aspect of it. If they do it isimportant to ask them what they think could be done toimprove it. It is also important they know that if they don'twant to take part in particular activities they don't have to,and that as facilitators you want to hear their ideas abouthow to make the project as fun and as engaging aspossible.

Activities and Games for getting comfortable withthe process: It is important early on to check that everyoneknows what the project is all about and feels comfortablewith it. It may be helpful, for instance, to revisit thediscussion you had before the project started and to outlinethe six steps of the CtC process. If the young people don'tknow each other, name games can be helpful. Activities thatallow the young people to establish ownership of the projectare also important. Giving children the opportunity to namethe project, for instance, works well.

Establishing 'Ground rules' or a 'Guide for working together'is a helpful way of concluding Step One. The children'sreflections on what helped and hindered their co-operationduring the games can be used as a basis for the guide /rules. This can be referred to throughout the course of theproject as an aid to group work during the sessions.

Activities and Games for expressing feelings: Asthe project will focus on issues of importance to the children,it is best that the group is comfortable talking about theirfeelings from the beginning. Sometimes children choosedifficult and emotive topics on which to work. Having hadthe chance to practice expressing difficult and sensitivefeelings, to explore the different ways in which peoplecommunicate and to get to know more about each other,can help if difficult issues arise throughout the CtC process.

3 It is helpful to have a plan for the day written up for

everyone to see. It gives the groups a sense of structure

and can be useful to go back to at the end of the session

to establish what has been achieved.

3Debriefing the games is essential to draw out the key

learning points. But don’t overdo it – it can get boring!

3Often working in a big group can be difficult and breaking

it down into smaller groups may be a good idea. There

are many ways to divide a large group up into smaller sub-

groups. See page 81 for some fun suggestions.

3 For the groups that finish their activities first, it is good to

have another activity to do whilst the others are finishing.

3At later stages in the CtC process, you may want to refer

back to some of the games that you played at the

beginning of the project, or play new ones, in order to

draw out particular concerns or issues, such as and

think, ‘if only we could change that, this would be abetter, happier and healthier place to live?’"

In a large group: Ask for and write down - so thateveryone can see - all the young people's suggestions.

NNBB:: The advantage to this method is that all the childrenhear all the other children's ideas, it doesn't take verylong (half an hour maximum) and does not require verymany materials. Some children may, however, not feelable to contribute in a large group because they maybe shy or uncomfortable sharing their ideas out loud. Ifthis is the case, try doing the activity in small groups.

In small groups: One method you could try is to askeach young person to write down every problem theythought of on a separate piece of card, writing on as manypieces of card as they want. The young people can thenstick the cards down on a large piece of poster paper andgive the poster a title. These posters can be displayed sothat everyone can circulate and look at the issues raised.

NNBB:: The advantage to this small group method is that thechildren may feel more able to contribute their ideas.Remember, though, working in small groups does takelonger and requires materials such as small pieces ofcard, markers, glue, scissors, pens, and poster paper.

The purpose of this step is to provide children with anopportunity to say what they think are key issues of concernin their community. Which question is asked at this stage isvery important because it will influence the responses thatchildren give. For example, if you ask them what are theproblems associated with drug abuse, you will elicit anarrower range of responses than if you ask the childrenabout the key problems in their neighbourhood.

Many people are concerned that a broad question will bedifficult for the children to answer or that it will elicit toomany or too broad a range of issues. Our experience is thatchildren welcome a broad question. They have clear ideasabout the problems in their community. Their views mayreflect concerns that defy adults' expectations andassumptions. You can ask a broad or more narrowlyfocused question - but remember this sets the whole projectin motion.

Ask children to reflect on issues of concern to them and toshare these with the group. This can be done in a largegroup or in smaller groups. We have found one techniquethat works well is visualisation. You may want to play somemusic, whilst asking the children to:

"…. Imagine that you are about to go to sleep. Foldyour arms, put your head on the table and close youreyes. As you lie there you are thinking back overyour day - about your home, your school, yourcommunity. What are some of the problems that you

children to identify where they are in the six step process.

going to ask and write it on a flipchart so that the children

can read it while thinking about their responses.

anything goes!

3Write things down in the children’s own words, or have

spelling is not important in this exercise)

If theyfeel one issue is much more important thanany other they can place all of their dotsbeside that issue. Alternatively they candivide up their dots and allocate themaccording to their various preferences. Onceall the children have placed their dots andthe dots have been counted up the issue withmost dots becomes the issue of choice.

In this step the children need to decide which of the manyissues they raised is the most important. All the issuesselected in step two are important; they would not havesuggested them unless they were of concern! But it is notpossible to take action on everything. So your role is to helpthe children decide which are the most important to themand which they want to take action on. You can use anumber of different techniques to help the children select theissue/s.

We have found it helpful to break this step into two stages.The first stage is to narrow down the list (perhaps to around6-8 issues, for instance through small group discussionand/or dotmocracy). The second stage is then aboutselecting from the short list the one, or perhaps two, issueson which the project will take place. This can be done, forexample, through a discussion and then a secret ballot.

Narrowing the list down and then selecting one or twoissues to work on can be done in various ways:

issue", "who is affected by that?", "how serious do you

think this is?"

3 Keep the discussion moving, don’t get bogged down in

too much detail. This can be boring for the group.

3 You don't always have to plan the way in which a

group will select an issue - they can also decide. The

children will have their own ideas about how to

prioritise in a way that is fair.

3A discussion about the different ways in which people

vote - for purely personal reasons or more altruistically -

can be useful at this stage in the CtC process. Doing

so is an important part of the process of learning about

democracy and citizenship.

3 If you think the voting may take some time it can be a

good idea to have a game running in parallel so that

everyone has something to do whilst the young people

go up one by one to vote.

3 For fun you could set up a voting booth, with the

group's list of issues displayed. Give each child a

voting slip to mark and place in a ballot box. Two or

three children could be responsible for counting up the

votes and presenting the count back to the whole

group.

3 It is important at this stage that children and adults

really listen to one another. It can be useful to refer

back to the listening games at this point and the guide

for working together.

3As always it is useful to have a lesson plan and to

make sure that everyone knows which step of the

process we are at, what came before and what is

Now that the children have selected the issue on which theywant to work, the next stage of the process is for them tofind out as much about it as possible. It is an important step!It doesn't follow that just because you know something is aproblem that you know why it is a problem and whatpossible solutions there might be. So it's important that thechildren are able to base their action on the bestinformation they can get hold of.

The children will already have some knowledge of the issue.They will also have ideas about what else it is they wouldlike to know, and how they might go about finding out thatinformation. It may be hard to resist the desire to tell thechildren what you think they need to find out and wherethey could get that information, but this is the children'sproject. Your role is to support them when they need it, butnot to lead it.

SSuuppppoorrtt

For a CtC project to be successful, support must be securedat all levels. Doing so may involve making contact with yoursupervisor, management committee, centre manager,parents, teachers, colleagues, project partners (includingLocal Authority Departments, regeneration partnerships),potential funders and others. It is important to explain thepotential benefits of the project and the process involved. Itis also necessary to explain that it is the children who willchoose the issue that they feel is most important to addressand it is the role of adults (both facilitators and supervisors)to support them in doing so. Children may choose sensitivetopics and this fact needs to be clearly understood andsupported by those who have overall responsibility for thechildren. It is critical that this support be given before aproject gets underway. For many, child-led projects such asCtC are new and may challenge traditional ways ofworking with children. Be sensitive to their questions andconcerns.

CChhiilldd PPrrootteeccttiioonn

It is important that all facilitators are familiar with childprotection policies and procedures before a project beginsso that in the unlikely event that a child discloses informationabout abuse everyone knows how to deal with it. This maymean ensuring that those who are not familiar with childprotection procedures receive training. Agreeing on ashared approach is important as professionals from different

backgrounds may follow slightly different child protectionprocedures from one another and need to agree how theissue will be managed in this project.

RReessoouurrcceess

In some contexts, additional human and material resourcesmay be required in order to undertake a CtC project:

SSttaaffffiinngg:: It is always useful to have a least one member ofthe team who is known to the children, and is used toworking with them. Experience of working with the group isvaluable when planning and implementing the CtC sessions.Facilitators need not have any specific professionalbackground. However, it is essential that all involvedsubscribe to the philosophy and principles of the CtCapproach. The actual number of facilitators needed for eachproject will depend on the number and age of the childrenyou are working with. Experience would suggest 3-4facilitators for a class of 30 primary school children.

TTrraaiinniinngg:: Training in the principles and practicalities of theCtC approach is available in London. Some people alreadyhave a lot of experience of working in the way described inthis manual. Others with less experience may find that thetraining which complements the guidance given in thismanual is helpful. You can contact us for more details by e-mail at [email protected].

MMaatteerriiaallss:: CtC projects can succeed on a very limitedbudget. Many sessions use little more than a flip chart (orwhite board), paper and pens. These materials are oftenavailable on site. If not, a budget of up to £100 should besufficient.

move around freely for games and activities. Ideally, itworks well to have several spaces where the children canbreak into small groups but also come together as one largegroup when desired. If the children's work and posters canremain on the wall or in the room between sessions, somuch the better. In most cases, space can be provided bythe school, club, church etc. where the project is takingplace.

If you need funding in order to undertake a CtC project,there are a number of funding bodies you could contact.The involvement of children in community improvement is agrowing priority for many organisations, both statutory andvoluntary. For instance, you may want to approach:

The exercises outlined below are classified in terms of"evaluation tools" and "reflection tools". However, withsmall changes, each can be used in either capacity.

use as criteria for evaluating the project. If the list isparticularly long, it is not necessary to evaluate every oneof the rules, only those the children feel to be mostimportant. For example, if 'be quiet when someone else istalking', 'have a go' and 'have fun!' were chosen by thechildren at the beginning as important issues for the groupto remember when working together, then these can beevaluated using the wheel.

Ask each child to draw a wheel with the same number ofspokes as there are items to be evaluated. Each spokeshould be clearly labelled with the item it is intended tomeasure. Tell the children that they will be evaluating eachitem on a scale of 1-10 (the scale can be smaller foryounger children, or can include "likes" and "dislikes").The centre of the wheel represents a "1" and the outsideedge a "10". For each item to be evaluated, the childrenshould mark the spoke at the appropriate place. Once allspokes have been marked, a line can be drawn betweenthem. The result is a visual way of comparing the children’sview of the CtC project and the template which representsa "perfect 10".

PPrroocceedduurree:: Write all of the different elements to beevaluated on a flipchart and paste it on the wall for all thechildren to see. Go over each of the items to be evaluatedto be sure that the children recall exactly what each itemrefers to. Then give each child five happy faced stickersand five sad faced stickers. Ask them to think carefullyabout each of the things being evaluated. After about 5minutes, ask the children to go up one by one and stick thehappy faced stickers beside those items that they thinkwere the "best" and the sad-faced stickers beside thoseitems that were the "worst". Once all the children haveplaced their stickers on the wall, go through the list of"bests" and "worsts" and discuss why certain thingsworked well and why they liked some activities more thanothers.

NNBB:: If you are concerned that the children will beinfluenced by the selections of their peers, this exercise canbe adapted by giving children happy and sad faced cardsand asking them to place the appropriate cards in smallenvelopes beside each of the items on the list.

PPrroocceedduurree:: Ask children to place themselves along arating continuum. One wall in the room, or part of anotheropen space, represents positive feelings, the opposite wallrepresents negative feelings, and the middle of the spacerepresents neutral. Item by item, the facilitator asks forfeedback on each major part of the project, day’s agenda,or individual activity, by having children positionthemselves along the continuum and asking each to sharewith the group why they placed themselves in a particularspot. It is important to keep the pace fast, allowing justenough time for everyone to get a sense of how everyonefelt about the different parts of the project (or activity).

PPuurrppoossee:: to provide children with a stimulus fordiscussion and group analysis about theproject, what worked well, didn’t work well,etc. This technique can be used effectively forStep 6. (Photos can also make a nice additionto an evaluation report for a funder, or otherinterested body and can be displayed in theroom where the project is taking place so thechildren can see the project developing).

Games have many purposes: relaxing the group,having fun, getting to know each other, learning new skills,etc. It is best to know what you aim to achieve by using agame at a particular time and to choose the gameaccordingly.

It is often helpful to talk about the games once they areover. You can ask the group an exploratory question, suchas: 'what helped your group complete the task so quickly?','what made the game so difficult?'. The responses thatchildren give can be used as a springboard for discussionat any time in the project.

The games listed below have been used in CtC projects inLondon and elsewhere. Each is explained in detail.However, small adjustments may need to be madeaccording to the number, age and abilities of the childrenand how well they work together. During step one you mayfind it useful to play several games in a row and then to talkabout them all together afterwards.

This technique can also be used in only onecircle of children, if the group size is small.

MMaatteerriiaallss:: Make up a set of cards with the name of afamous person, or an animal, on each. Youcould get the group to do this themselves.

PPrroocceedduurree:: This game is suitable for small or largegroups and can be played in different ways. Each personcan have a card with an animal or a famous person stuckonto his or her forehead or back. Everyone then rotatesasking questions of one another, which can only beanswered 'yes' or 'no', to determine who they are. Youcould limit the number of questions to 20. Alternatively in agroup one person can be given a card that they then actout. The people in the group then take it in turns to askquestions.

The parachute ismade to balloon up, and as it reaches its full height thefacilitator or one of the children call out a characteristic ofappearance e.g. blue shoes, white socks, people wearinga watch, etc. Whilst the parachute is still in the air,everyone with that characteristic has to swap places.Repeat the game. If children are all given a number (saybetween 1-5) before the game starts, when their number iscalled they can all change places.

MMaakkiinngg aa tteenntt -- Lift the parachute into the air andwhilst it is falling to the ground everyone puts their edgebehind them and sits on the edge of the parachute on thefloor, making a huge tent. You can then play other gamessuch as swap shop.

MMeexxiiccaann wwaavvee -- you need a ball for this game. Holdthe parachute at waist level. Participants raising andlowering the parachute one after the other can create awave. If a ball is then placed on the parachute, the aimcan be to keep it rolling around the edge without it fallingoff or ending up in the middle.

BBoouunncciinngg bbaallll:: everyone holds the parachute at waistlevel, the ball is placed on the parachute. You bounce theball on the parachute. If the ball comes your way you tryto stop it, if it is moving away from you, you try to roll itoff the opposite edge.

PPiiggggyy iinn tthhee mmiiddddllee -- one person at a time takes it inturn to stand under the parachute. That player has to try toknock the ball off the parachute, whilst those in the circletry to keep it on. Whoever is nearest the ball when it fallsoff the canopy has to swap into the middle.

There are a number of ways in which facilitatorscan instruct a large group to get into several smallergroups. The participants can be asked to self-select theirgroups or they can be randomly selected or asked to joinpre-allocated groups. It is good to vary the ways in whichgroups are formed and a few suggestions are listed belowof how this can be done in a fun way.

Procedure: Ask each group member to get a chair, form acircle with them and sit down. The facilitator stands in themiddle of the circle and asks participants in sequence for thenames of different fruits (or you could use animals). If youwant to break into four small groups afterwards, get thenames of fours fruits only and then ask everyone to repeat insequence (e.g. banana, apple, orange, pear, banana, apple,orange, pear, banana etc….) The person standing calls outthe name of a fruit and then all those of that fruit changeplaces. The person left in the middle calls out the name ofanother fruit and all of them change places. People can alsocall out fruit salad in which case everyone has to move. Wheneveryone has had a chance to move about the facilitatormakes sure they are left in the middle at the end of a changeover so they can ask the apples to form a group, all the pearsanother etc. so moving into small groups for the next activity.

PPrroocceedduurree:: Ensure you have a large clear space andinvite everyone to stand there. Ask everyone in the groupto look around and silently choose one person in the groupto be their 'A' and another person to be their 'B'. Theydon't have to use any special criteria to select individuals,they can select anyone they want.

Once everyone has made their choices ask everyone to tryto get as close to their 'A' person as possible and as faraway from their 'B' as they can. People can move asquickly as they like but they should not be allowed to holdonto anyone. After a few minutes you can change itaround so that everyone has to try to get as close to the'B' and as far away from their 'A' as possible.

10 mins Aims of Child-to-Child: explain these are to:have fun; learn something about working ingroups; to do something about a problem in yourcommunity; and to feel good about having donesomething important to help others in yourcommunity.Steps of the project: go through the 6 steps on aflipchart (asking the children what they think thesteps might be about).

25 mins Feelings cards: Break into small groups (ofabout 5/6 – random selection numberingeveryone 1-5 and then asking all the ones, twosetc to form groups). Make sure everyone has apiece of paper and a pen and give everyone a

few minutes to complete the sentences (seeabove). Then in pairs discuss your answers witheach other. Then your partner introduces you toeveryone in the small group. Have the questionswritten up at the front of the room.

Briefly draw out: the importance of listening toeach other, learning things about each other,different people have different skills, everyone hassomething to offer and contribute to the project.

25 mins Charades: ask everyone to get into groups of5/6 (let them choose their own groups) and worktogether to figure out how to mime a: rowingboat / rubbish lorry / space ship / motorbike /steam train…then act it out to everyone else and see if theycan guess what they are.

15 mins Develop a Guide for Working Together:referring back to the feelings cards and thecharades ask: what helped the groups work welltogether? What was missing when they weren'tworking so well? What do they think are themost important things for a group to do if theyare to work well? Write down their ideas andexplain that this will form a guide for workingtogether which will be used to help us during thewhole project.

Facilitators to feedback – reflectingperhaps that there are lots of similar issues on thedifferent posters and some different ones too –and that all are important. Let them know thatnext week they will need to narrow it down a bit– and start to think about choosing the issues thatare the most important.

15 mins Scavenger hunt (see games section) – inplayground weather permitting.

15 mins Debrief the scavenger hunt. So - who speakstwo languages? And who likes brussel sprouts?Who finished first? How did you manage tocomplete it so quickly - what helped? Draw outthat these are the kinds of things that might helpthem when they do the finding out step.

Revisit the objectives of the session and ask themto place themselves on a scale to evaluate howmuch / little they liked the scavenger hunt andwhy.

10 mins Finish by explaining that next week the classwill vote to select just one of the issues presentedin the session - refer to the flip chart of the steps.
