What is Child Protection?

‘child protection’ is a set of measures and structures toprevent and respond to abuse, neglect, violence andexploitation affecting development of children.

• According to UNCRC Article 32,34 & 35 recognized Children’s right to beProtected

• Economic exploitation & hazardous work

• Sexual exploitation

• Trafficking

• More than one million children are trafficked every year

• More than one million have been orphaned or separated• More than one million have been orphaned or separated

• 50 million girls and 73 million boys becomes victim of raped or subjected to otherforms of sexual violence

• Around the world 115 million children are involved in the worst forms of childlabour

• Just over one billion children live in countries or territories affected by armed conflict

• Three out of four children experience violent discipline at home.

• In Bangladesh, 64% of women get married before the age of 18.

Why focus on Child Protection?

1. Healthy women and children are agents of sustainable development (1992 Rio Declaration on

Environment and Development, Principle 20)

2. Investing in women and children (i.e. in the health and education) will reduce child and maternal mortality, slow population
