About our services

Child and family health nursing services provide health and developmental checks for babies and children. A list of these checks can be found in your child’s Blue Book (My Personal Health Record). Child and Family Health Nurses also provide support, education and information on parenting at any time you have questions or concerns. Age group: birth to five years.

Child nutrition services are provided by early childhood dietitians and include consultations for babies and children who are above or below the healthy weight range. Dietitians also see children for common nutrition issues such as iron deficiency anaemia and cow’s milk protein intolerance. Age group: birth to before starting school.

Counselling services, including psychologists and social workers, see children and their families to

emotions, social functioning or behaviour. Age group: three to 12 years.

Early childhood social work services provide assessment and counselling to support adjustment to parenting, post-natal emotional distress, domestic violence, child development and related family and relationship issues. Age group: birth to three years.

Hearing (audiometry) services assist with early identification of ear disease and hearing impairment. Audiometry can make referrals to other health professionals and educators. Hearing checks are available from nine months of age. Age group: nine months to 12 years.

Occupational therapy services provide assessment and

everyday activities such as play, self-care, handwriting, getting dressed and other activities where they need to use their hands and fingers. Age group: birth to 12 years.

Physiotherapy services provide assessment and treatment for babies and children who are having

learning to sit, crawl, walk or reach for toys) or with their balance and coordination (such as jumping and hopping). Age group: birth to 12 years.

Speech pathology services provide assessment

communication and feeding. This could include learning to talk, understanding others, expressing ideas with words, speaking clearly and being understood. Age group: birth to 12 years (assessment and consultation only for school age children).

Vision (orthoptics) to identify, diagnose and manage vision disorders. Age group: birth to 12 years.

Specialised services

Your child needs a referral from your doctor or other health professional to access the following services.

Community paediatric services provide medical assessments for children. These assessments help families to learn more about their child’s physical health and growth as well as emotional health and development. You will need a referral from your local doctor to access this service. Age group: birth to 18 years.

Disability specialist unit provides comprehensive developmental assessments, health services and support for children with or suspected to have developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. The team includes psychologists, social workers and doctors. You will need a referral from your paediatrician to access this service. Age group: birth to 18 years (with priority given to birth to six years).
