PSLE - a placement exam
• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of students among their peers
• Places students into different courses according to their academic ability
• Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice
Aggregate Score
The Aggregate score is calculated by adding the T-scores of the 4 subjects
AGGREGATE
T-Score vs Raw Score
• T-Score gives the relative position of your child’s performance as compared to the performance of all other students in that subject.
• Raw score obtained in the exam shows how well the child has done in the subject BUT not how well she has done as compared to others.
The T-Score
• Calculation of T-score for each subject:-
where:-
X : student’s mark for the subject
Y : average mark (mean) scored by all students
Z : spread of marks around the average (SD)
T = 50 + 10 (X - Y) Z
Example
• Student’s mark (X) in Math : 50.0
• Average mark (Y) scored
by all students of the cohort : 68.0
• Spread of marks (Z) around
the average mark : 14.0
T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68) 14 = 37.14
