Academic News Math – This week students have been studying the characteristics of circles. They have worked on calculating problems involving circumference and perimeter. Compound figures have also been studied and analyzed. A 3-week assessment was given today. Algebra –Students began a unit studying the basics of Geometry. Applications problems involving the area of parallelograms, trapezoids, triangles and circles have been presented to and analyzed by the students this week. Next week we will work with the volume of different shaped containers. Reading – Students in Mr. Reinhart's reading classes completed their 3 week assessment. The focus was specifically on paraphrasing, imagery, and symbolism. This assessment correlated to Common Core Standards 4 and 10.
Applied LA – Students have finished their study of the Roaring Twenties with an assessment this week. We are not starting our study of the Great Depression and the New Deal. We will be working on citing evidence from primary and secondary sources. This is Common Core Standard 1.
Science - This week in science students learned about water pollution and conservation. We looked at a watershed model city to understand how different types of pollution can quickly spread through a habitat. Next week we will be learning about ocean currents and waves.

Fine arts/Clubs/Sports/Intramurals Spanish – Students in 8th grade Spanish finished studying
time and are reviewing the locations around a school. They will also be studying two new verbs.
Art – Art students are working on African masks and also working on designing posters for the ISATS.
PE - The 8th graders in PE classes have been working on a hockey unit. They are learning the technique for dribbling, passing, and shooting. This week we also held our Hoops for Heart event. The students participated in activities such as a 3-point shoot out, partner 3-point shoot out, free throw competition and fancy lay-up. The students did a great job participating and raising money for the
American Heart Association.
