We still support Salmon In The Classroom; Casting For Recovery; Hooked on Fishing and PHWFF, Project Healing Waters Fly fishing, (Disabled American Veterans) our newest program. I hear fishing at Baum has picked up; but, be careful!!! I just heard of a potentially serious accident that occurred when a gentleman stood up in his boat to??? and the boat tipped over. He had hundreds and hundreds of flies; numerous rods and other gear went floating away. They were able to save the man...but, he wasn’t able to swim and between all the boats and people helping they did get him to shore and into a warm truck...Be aware, this isn’t the time “you” want to go swimming.... Please check out the fly fishing trips listed in this news letter and call the person in charge of that trip for questions...Thank you!!! Please feel free to vote for Awards to the person “you” feel deserves a special recognition as well, classifications attached. Mike Elliott aka Dirty Mike Discover Montana Outfitting’s owner and operator, Mike Elliott, is com-monly known around the Madison Valley as “Dirty Mike.” Mike has been a licensed Montana guide for over a decade, and passed his outfitter exam in 2017 (Montana Outfitter #30309).His passion for fly fishing started long before he turned it into a career. He spent his childhood tying flies and exploring Northwest Montana on his pedal bike, fishing pole in hand. He graduated from Polson High School, and found his way to the Bear tooth Wilderness and Yellowstone National Park guiding back country hunting and fishing trips. He moved to Ennis in 2011, and has spent every year since learning the ins and outs of the Madison River, as well as the other waterways Southwest Montana offers. In the fall season, Mike is busy operating his hunting outfitting camp. After the last clients leave for the season he hunts everything from big game to birds. By hosting fly fishing trips to South America, he is able to warm back up in winter. He also does ranch work in the winter and spring, spending his days with cows, calves and his horses.

Fishing in the Beautiful Month of January

Well, it is now the new year and a new season of fishing, by the way, do not just run out of the house without buying a new license, as I almost did. Fishing in January usually con-sists a fisherman using a variety of highly specialized tech-niques to catch a cold. A few of us, the ones who view this as an extreme sport, like to flirt with hypothermia, trench foot, and frost bite as well. There is something very special in my mind about fishing in conditions so cold that it would scare

off most people, standing in a freezing river, hoping for an occasional fish. Some of this may be my general philosophy about steelhead fishing; You know, less is more. As fate would have it, I was downtown at the outdoors store retuning some things when I happened upon a conver-sation between a young man and the store clerk about winter fishing. It seems this pleasant fellow was off for his first steel-head adventure and was seeking advise on footwear. He had already bought the usual things, boots, insulated waders, but was concerned that his feet would still be cold. The clerk was

Bass fishing Lake Picachos Jan 8-13, 2020: By Pat & Don Our group of 12, had a wonderful time; and, we’re all talking about the next trip Jan 2021 to Lake Picachos owned by Angler’s Inn, Mexico. The weather was cloudy most of the time though the temperature ranged in the low 80’s. Fishing this lake is quite fun as the water has a tea like color in most areas due to the abundance of foliage around the lake sides; though there are sandy beaches, as well, where you can drag your fly into the water from and, catch quite frequently a nice bass with a clouser, popper or minnow imitation; Hitting some of the surrounding foliage, this time, seamed to be a favorite of mine; and then…most days, it would fall into the water with a bit of “mild” finesse; and, ohhhh….snag! I believe this and taking into consider-ation the lake was full, with water going over the dam, gave us more fishing locations allowing its maze of islands we daily fished around, exist. Our group of Fly fishermen and women who caught and released over 2000 Black Bass in 4 days of fishing had our arms and backs a bit sore; and all this with only one broken fly rod. The fish ranged between 1 lb and 7 lbs. We used poppers, small minnow patterns and clousers. Don & Pat did a lot of popper dropper fishing and caught a great deal of doubles: our first day had 7 to the boat. The majority of our fish were caught on the surface using poppers. Angler’s Inn International owned by Billy Chapman “always” pro-vides the most outstanding service of any lodge we have ever fished out of!!! Next year we’ll be back again with outfitter: https://patsflyfishing.com

Fly of the Month, February, 2020The Found LinkBlue Wing Olive is the generic name for the Mayfly more cor-rectly known as a Baetis. In fly fishing books you will see both terms as well as the shortened BWO used, but they all mean the same thing. It’s a small, more or less olive colored, Mayfly. The heaviest hatches of BWO’s occur from late fall, through the winter and early spring. The best condition for getting into a hatch is an overcast chilly day. In fact, a light snow storm will often bring them out in big numbers. While usually associ-ated with moving water, there are times when their imitations will work in a lake. An obvious example is Baum Lake with its moving current. However, a couple of years ago, I had run out of WD40’s on Manzanita lake, The closest I could come was the Olive, and they took it without hesitation.Over the years, there have been several postings in the FOTM featuring different stages of this bug. Among them are the WD40 in November of 2012 and Higa’s SOS in April of 2015. That’s what caught my eye when I saw the video on the Evil Olive. The video was done by Tim Flagler. Again, if you aren’t familiar with him, correct that oversight as soon as possible. In my opinion, he puts out some of the clearest, most succinct tying videos available today. Putting his name in the search box of You Tube will keep you occupied for some time. In the video, Flagler points out he likes the fly because it is a composite of two of his favorite flies, the above mentioned SOS and WD40. He also states he isn’t sure if it is really a BWO imitation, or just a good attractor pattern. My experience on Manzanita might suggest it’s both.Hook: Scud type hook like a TMC 2488 16 & 18. The hook has a 2X short shank, so it’s smaller than the number indicates.Bead: Black 5/64 or 2mm.Thread: 8/0 Ultra in Light Olive Rib: Gold wire, size smallTail and Wing Case: Wood Duck flank or Mallard Flank, dyed Wood DuckAbdomen: Tying threadThorax: SLF dubbing in Olive, or similarLegs: 2 strands of Pearl Krystal FlashBubble: UV Resin

1. Debarb the hook, thread on the bead and place the hook in the vise.

2. Start your thread right behind the bead and take a few wraps down the shank, then cut off the excess tag.

3. Tie in your ribbing wire by placing the end inside the bead, and then wrap it down, with touching wraps, all the way to a point well down the bend of the hook. Allow the thread torque to take the wire to the side of the hook away from you.

4. Pull a good sized clump of the Wood Duck or Mallard, trying to keep the tips as even as possible. Tie it in where you ended tying down the wire with a couple of fairly loose wraps. It’s easier if you tie it down much longer than you are going to need and then pull the clump forward until the tail is about a hook gap long.

5. Wrap the material, again with touching wraps, all the way to the bead, keeping the feathers on the top of the hook. Leave them sticking out over the bead.

6. Wrap your thread all the way back to the tie in point of the tail, and then wrap up and back forming a slight taper toward the head. If using Ultra Thread or UTC, wrap it back to the tail, and spin it counter clockwise. This will flatten it out, and as you wrap back up to the bead, give you a nice, smooth body.

7. Spiral wrap the wire up to the bead. Tie it off and helicopter it so it breaks off.

8. Now wrap your thread back so it hangs just a bit behind the hook point.

9. Pull the tail material back to that point and tie it down, keeping it on top of the hook. Wrap your thread back and forth a couple of times to give you a smooth base.

10. While Flagler calls for Olive SLF dubbing, I didn’t have any, and didn’t want to track some down to buy it. I used Olive Ice Dub, and so far, the fish don’t seem to have penalized me for doing so. Dub a very slim noodle on your thread, and wrap in the Thorax.

11. Take two strands of the Krystal Flash and tie them in right behind the bead. Use a couple of figure eight wraps to hold them down. You should then be able to manipulate them a bit to pull them to the sides of the hook. Use a couple of thread wraps to hold them there.

12. Pull the wing case feathers back to the bead and tie them down. Cut off the excess and then whip finish your thread and cut it off.

13. Pull the Krystal Flash back and using the back of the hook as a guide, cut them off there.

14. Place a good drop of the UV Resin over the Wing Case. Use your Bodkin to spread it around a bit so it covers all the feathers. Make sure it goes over the front so it is also on the bead.

15. Cure the Resin and the fly is done.
