A Message from the PRESENT Residency Summit Committee:

Welcome Podiatric Residents, Directors, Faculty and friends from across America, to the first PRESENT Residency Education Summit. 8 years ago, we at PRESENT had a vision that podiatric residency education could be better. A number of prominent residency directors came to us, told us that they needed help providing good standardized educational programming for their programs and asked us to create an online repository of Power-point files where they could share these resources with each other. We asked them for 6 months to develop something even better and in 2004, introduced the online multimedia lecture series now known as PRESENT Online Podiatric Residency Education, that is now in use at over 90%

of podiatric residency programs. In many ways, this conference is the natural extension of that service, and it’s big brother, PRESENT Podiatry.

There is a wonderful fraternity and of course, now a sorority among podiatrists, with all of our female colleagues. Podiatry has a kind of collegiality that doesn’t exist in other medical specialties. It provides a richness to our profession, and has contributed in a real sense to our upward trajectory during the last 3 decades. That’s part of why we at PRESENT wanted to get as much of the US foot and ankle residency education community together in one place for this conference. Because as a profession, we have a tradition of sharing with each other, and that sharing has fueled our rapid growth. All doctors teach each other, but we do so with a passion and dedication that is unique to our proud profession. That sharing happens every day within your programs. This conference, the first PRESENT Residency Education Summit, is for extending that sharing between programs. We all have so much to teach each other, not just about how we treat patients’ particular issues, but also, how we run our programs and how we manage our careers as developing foot and ankle surgeons.

I encourage you all to take advantage of this opportunity to get to know your colleagues from programs around the country here at the Summit, and compare notes on your career paths and what you have planned for the next few years.

As much as anything, this conference is a tribute to the teaching that gen-erations of podiatrists have done so selflessly since we were first organized as a profession by the New York State Podiatric Medical Association way back in 1895. Welcome to the first Podiatric Residency Summit. We at PRESENT, and podiatry as a profession, are so very proud of you.

Welcome

Pinning the Finest Podiatric Residency Programs in the Country Against Each Other in a Academic CompetitionNO HOLDS BARRED

$2500 in Cash Prizes (per Team)There are 213 Podiatric Residency Programs in the country.

Which one is the best?PRESENT Podiatry boldly seeks to answer this question by challenging residents to an academic competition that will knock them right out of their shoe covers. The ultimate winner gets the bragging rights to say they are PRESENT Podiatry’s “Best Program in the Country”.

Saturday Night at 8 pm – Following Dinner in the Lecture Hall

Rules and ProceduresAll residents attending the conference participate. Programs with 4 or more residents attending will compete with their fellow residents as a team. Programs with 1, 2 or 3 residents attending will be paired up into teams of 4. We have residents from over 70 pro-grams competing, but there will be about 40 teams.

We’ll have 2 rounds. We’ll start with a Qualifying Round in which all teams compete together. They’ll be 60 questions in one hour. Each team will receive a keypad and you will get 20-30 seconds to answer each question (depending on the question) which will be dis-played on the screen. Responses will be graded both on getting the correct answer and on speed of response. Faster responses will be rewarded with higher point awards. Teams with the top 5 scores at the end of the Qualifying Round will advance to the Final Round. The top 5 winners will receive prizes as listed below.

The Final Round will determine the Rumble Champions. Each of the 5 teams advancing to the Finals Round will choose 2 champions to step up to the stage and face 10 Final Questions. These 10 Questions, among the most challenging of the Rumble, will determine the winners. In addition to bragging rights, all of the five final teams will be awarded prizes.

See handout in your registration package for your Team Assignment. When you enter the Lecture Hall, there will be signs on the tables indicating where each team will gather. Each team has a number. Find your team number, meet your team members, and plan some strategy. We recommend one member of each team be chosen to submit answers via the keypad.

Breakout Sessions

Podiatric Fellowship Presentation

Residency Genesis Workshop

With the recent approval and adoption of the CPME 320 document, a fundamental change will occur in the way we train residents. We have now joined many other health professions in recognizing the importance of using adult learning principles and accelerated teaching techniques in our residency programs. With this change comes an added challenge for residency directors and your faculty to beginlearning and utilizing these techniques. Additionally, resident evaluation and remediation must also be stepped up to meet the new de-mands. The program was arranged by Jeff Robbins, DPM and is designed to help you meet these challenges. Presenters will be medical education experts Daniel Wolpaw, MD, Director of Undergraduate Clinical Education at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Susan Padrino, MD, Director of Physical Diagnosis Course at Case, and Jeff Robbins, DPM, Director, Podiatry Services, VA Central Office, Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC

There is so much more to the career development of a podiatrist than academics. There is even more than surgery. For an hour on Friday, we’re all going to break up into 20 groups of 9 Residents and a Group Leader, get to know each other, and have an informal discussion on one of the many issues regarding your life as a resident and your career path once you finish your training. Each session will be lead by an experienced Residency Director or Faculty member who will provide mentorship and their sage advice to you.

See your conference materials for the handout showing you the group that you’ve been assigned to, the group leader, and the topic you’ll be discussing. Immediately following the Breakout Session is dinner time. You’ll be going into a Grand Reception in the Exhibit Hall with your new colleagues, where you can continue the conversations started in the Breakout Sessions.

There will be a special presentation by Vickie R Driver, DPM during the Residency Faculty Leadership Workshop on developing a Fellowship program at your hospital.

There will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A.

1. List advanced learning techniques that may be effective in a podiatric residency program.2. Describe how you could customize these techniques into your program.3. Describe new evaluation techniques you may be able to use in your program.4. Describe remediation issues in your residency programs.5.
