Soup to Nuts Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered

Written by Rabbi Dovid CohenA service of the Chicago Rabbinical Council2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES .Q. I am looking into homeo-

pathic solutions and I cameacross several halachic concerns, such as kishuf (forbiddenwitchcraft), gevinas akum, stamyayin, and other kosher-sensitiveingredients. I was wonderingwhether the cRc had moreinformation and maybe even anofficial position on these“medications”.

A. You are correct that theactive and inactive ingredientsused in homeopathic remediesmay be non-kosher, and youshould definitely consult withyour local Rabbi beforeconsuming any of these items. He will consider the ingredientsin the given product and otherfactors in deciding whether it isappropriate for you.

SEA-BAND.Q. My friends recommended

that I chew Sea-Band gingergum to relieve my pregnancy-related nausea. Do you know ifit is kosher?

A. We contacted the companywho told us that although thegum is known to be acceptablefor vegetarians, it is not certifiedas kosher. In addition, they havenot been able to provide koshercertificates for some of thekosher - sensitive ingredientsincluded in the gum. Thereforewe are unable to recommend it.

However, the company didsuggest that you try their Sea-Band wrist band which (they

claim) is also able to reducenausea merely by wearing it onone’s arm. Of course, this itemis not ingested and does notpose a kashrus concern. [Asalways, we have no idea as to theefficacy of either the gum orwrist band, and are justcommenting on the kashrus partof this issue.]

KASHERING A POT

Q. How does one kasher alarge pot?

A. To kasher a pot, you shoulddo the following:

▪Clean it thoroughly on boththe inside and outside

▪Let it sit unused for 24 hours▪Fill a larger pot with water

and bring that water to a boil(this pot must be clean and notbeen used for 24 hours)

▪Submerge all parts of thesmaller pot (including the cover)into the larger one. It is okay tosubmerge different parts of thepot separately, as long as all partseventually get submerged.

▪If you do not have a largerpot, fill the pot which will bekashered with water and bringthat to a boil. At the same time, bring a small pot (which is cleanand hasn’t been used for 24hours) to a boil. When bothpots have come to a boil, carefully lower the smaller potinto the larger pot, which willcause the water to overflow fromthe larger pot. Be very careful tonot get scalded by the boilingwater.

After this, it is customary torinse the kashered pot in coldwater, and you may then use it aspareve, dairy or meat.

CHEESEBURGER FOR A NON-JEW.

Q. May I give a non-Jewishperson a cheeseburger (since itmight be basar b’chalav)? May Igive a non-Jewish person acoupon for a free cheeseburgerthat is basar b’chalav?

A. The answer to bothquestions is “no”.

Meat and milk which werecooked together are called“basar b’chalav” and one maynot have any benefit or pleasurethem. If you were to give thecheeseburger to a non-Jew thatwould generate goodwill be-tween the two of you, and thatgoodwill is considered a forbid-den direct-benefit from thecheeseburger. For that reason, you cannot give the cheese-burger or a coupon for one to anon-Jew.

Rav Schwartz did however saythat if one had a cents-offcoupon for a cheeseburger [i.e. adiscount for the cheeseburgerrather than a coupon for a freecheeseburger] then it would bepermitted to give that coupon toa non-Jew. He reasoned that thegoodwill generated by givinghim that coupon is too indirectlyrelated to the basar b’chalav, andtherefore does not pose aconcern.

KOSHER ALERTSThe following "grab and go" fruit / vegetable

and cheese packs from 7 Eleven under the'Fresh to Go' brand contain non-koshercheese and were mistakenly labeled with a cRc.Corrective action has been taken.

• Apple Red, Greenw/Cheese • Carrot,Celery w/Cheese • Red Grapes w/Cheese

Glory Foods Black Eyed Peas (canned), bearsan unauthorized Star-K symbol. The productis not certified by Star-K and contains dairyingredients. Corrective measures are beingtaken.

The Vaad of St. Louis logo inadvertently ap-pears on a variety of Ready Pac prewashed sal-ads such as the Santa Barbara and Spring Mix.This was printed in error as these products arenot certified by the OV due to concerns of in-sect infestation. Triple washed iceberg andcoleslaw varieties continue to be acceptable.

We all have someone in our liveswho is especially challenging, whoreally gets to us. Someone who

makes us “see red,” and takes us to a differentplace, a dark, painful place where we act inways that we don’t recognize, sometimes say-ing things we wish we could erase, to just hitthe delete key. But we can’t. It may be one ofour children or our spouse. There is no onewho forces us to look at ourselves more thanthey do. There’s nothing like living with a mir-ror. Nachmanides, the great Ramban, wrote a

well known letter to his son in which he urgeshim to adopt an approach to life founded onpatience and, “speaking softly, to all people, and at all times, saving you from hurting oth-ers with anger.” Not long ago, I met awoman who told me that she had never heardher father yell in anger. Then she paused, andcontinued: “the truth is I never heard himraise his voice at all. If he wanted to tell oneof the children that she had a phone call, he

would walk up the one flight to notify her, in-stead of shouting up the stairs.” Can youimagine, for a moment, what that must be like,a role model who always speaks gently, a par-ent you can trust to speak and act respectfully, both caring and careful of your feelings anddignity. The trick is being ever conscious of the in-

tegral importance of patience. And speakingsoftly. Fostering the patience within, pushingmyself, reminding myself, that mychild/spouse is fragile. And yes, he/she is sohurtful at times, and yes, she/he is not carefulof me, but still… it’s not ok to take revenge, and I still, I still, need to be careful. Fragilemeans that my words have tremendous power, they cut and slice, and leave gaping woundsthat take a long time to heal. Loving some-one means being extra sensitive in my interac-tions with him, and working so hard to controlmy rage, my destructive rage, and keeping itin check, to not damage the relationship. It may help to think of the following: The

AND AN ANGELSHOUTS “GROW!”

By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

Talmud tells us that each and every blade ofgrass in the world has an angel standing overit, shouting “Grow!” and so it grows. I hopeyou realize that the absolutely best growthagents in our lives are our children and/or ourspouse. So, the next time that “someone”pushes your buttons, you know who I mean, yes, that one, I want you to take a deep breath, look inside, and say to yourself, “I know thatG-d has sent me this angel, this beautiful angeljust for me, to help me grow, grow in control-ling my anger, grow in patience, grow in com-passion, grow in my commitment to caring forthe feelings of others, and to grow as a humanbeing, and as a Jew.” And then, if you can, give that angel a hug. Angels (this kind) needlots of hugs.

Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practicein Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, andfamilies, for many years. He lectures and writes ex-tensively on topics relating to psychology, relation-ships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

At NCSY, we understand Jewish teens bet-ter than anyone. Because we work with

them 365 days a year. And we’ve been doing it for 56 years.

One thing we’ve learned along the way: noth-ing inspires, motivates and builds teens like an NCSY summer. That’s because NCSY Summer is built on a simple mission - provide Jewish teens with a growth-oriented, meaningful and fun summer.

It starts with our staff and advisors. We have a simple philosophy: hire the best. That means positive and relatable role models who care about each teen and want to make a difference in their life. Those that can lead a learning group with teens in the morning, play sports

with them in the afternoon and hang out with them at night.

We view summer as the ultimate growth op-portunity. It’s when teens are free to make their own choices. And when you put them in a growth-oriented environment with positive reinforcement, they learn to make the right choices. In the summer, during the year and for the rest of their lives.

After a summer with NCSY, teens come back feeling more connected to their heritage, more appreciative of Shabbat, more committed to davening and more in love with Israel. Because when you take teens and give them a chance to run a camp for unaffiliated Jewish children in Austria on JOLT or bring public school teens to

Israel on TJJ so they can experience first hand the beauty of their country, they rarely ever see things the same. Years later, past participants look back on their summer as a turning point in their religious and spiritual growth. And quite often, the best summer of their lives.

Last summer, the parents and grandparents of 890 teens chose to send their kids on an NCSY Summer Program. This summer, let us show you what we can do for your child in 42 days or less. After all, you deserve it.

How to inspire your teenager in 42 days or lessYou’ve invested time and money instilling Jewish values in your children.

But are they passionate about being Jewish? This summer, they just might be.

"THE MEZUZAHS"A wealthy Jewish manbuys a fabulous homein Beverly Hills. Hebrings in a local work-man to decorate theplace.

When the job is fin-ished, the homeowneris delighted but real-izes that he's forgottento put mezuzahs onthe doors. He goes outand buys 50 mezuzahsand asks the decora-tor to place them onthe right hand side ofeach door except thebathrooms.

He's really worried thatthe decorator will chipthe paint work or won'tput them up correctly. However, when hecomes back a fewhours later, he seesthat the job has beencarried out to his entiresatisfaction.

He's so pleased thathe gives the decora-tor a bonus.
