Chaplain’s Message:

Brother Knights and Friends:

In January 2017 I was asked by then Chapter President Scott Hawkins, to be Chaplain for Archdiocese of Chicago Chapter. I had a long history with the Knights of Columbus since joining in 1981 as a member and Chaplain of Chicago East side’s Trinity Council. I said yes. I had not been active since arriving in Chicago in July 2016.

A member of the Servite Order, I was transferred from St. Louis and took up residence at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica Community at Jackson and Kedzie, Chicago. I assumed the position of the U.S.A. Province Archivist-Historian.

I looked forward to being reacquainted with Chicago Knights. I had left Chicago in 1991 for pastoral assignments that led to my involvement as Chaplain to 3

rd

degree Councils and 4th degree

Assemblies in New Jersey, Florida, California, and Missouri. I left Missouri as the outgoing State Chaplain and St. Louis Chapter Chaplain.

The Executive Board of the Chicago Chapter is hardworking Brothers dedicated to improving the qualities of Knighthood in the Archdiocese. We meet the 4

th

Thursday of the month traveling to various regions of the Archdiocese. Times and locations are listed in this newsletter. I encourage all District Deputies, Grand Knights and Faithful Navigators to consider attending. Our work to support all of you can

only be as successful as your willingness to be one with us.

I pray that you are enjoying a Happy Easter Season. See you soon at an upcoming meeting.

God Bless,

Fr. Paul Fr. Paul Gins, O.S.M.

Spring has finally sprung and with it we have warmer weather, new leaves on the trees, and the start of baseball season! It feels as if only yesterday we were enjoying football and turkey dinner with family at Thanksgiving and preparing for the cold desolation of winter. But now as I peel the remaining Easter eggs, I wonder where did the time go?

As a Catholic, my time spent in Lenten self-scrutiny and service to others, helped to redirect thoughts away from the ridiculous and often horrific events with which we are bombarded daily through the media, and refocus my attention on parish community, family, and inner soul. Spring is a great time for this as we renew our commitment to our Catholic faith by acknowledging at Easter, the Lord’s dying and rising again for us. But now, how many of us feel that with Easter past we can relax into a comfortable Catholic routine, an obligation satisfied by some in attending weekly Mass? Not for me, and not for my brother Knights of Columbus in Illinois!

As Knights we herald Easter as the pinnacle of Catholic Faith inspired by the teachings of Jesus demonstrating Christian values and selflessness. Likewise, we appreciate the importance of Mass, remembering the acts of

Jesus and sharing in the Eucharist. But we also recognize the need get out and live those Christian values and serve selflessly.

We know we cannot be “deer in the headlights”, as Notre Dame Cathedral burns in Paris and Christians are slaughtered for their faith around the world. We must take action! We do this by praying together and working together and visibly demonstrating we WILL stand up and support what we believe in as Catholics. Our Order encourages us to do so, by unifying us in good works and prayerful deeds, activities illustrated in “Faith in Action” programing provided by the Supreme Council to guide us in practicing our faith in a proactive way.

How many brother knights have strengthened their Catholic faith and their Catholic community by providing Helping Hands to those in need or gathering and leading our fellow Catholics in a Novena of prayer or even staged an abortion protest?? If your council has not yet organized these activities go to www.kofc.org/faithinaction and be inspired.

This world is closing in around Catholics, holding us to a double standard with expectations that we be tolerant of immoral acts like abortion and religious persecution without acknowledging our values. We are faced with immeasurable hate. Now is the time for our Councils to get involved by organizing and leading our Catholic communities in putting our Faith into Action and show our love, strength, and resolve as Jesus has taught us.

It was General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic who designated May 30, 1868, “as a day for strewing with flowers” or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, or hamlet churchyard in the land.

“It is the purpose of the commander-in-chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept from year to year while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of the departed."

USCCB RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

CHAIRMAN ANNOUNCES

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WEEK

FROM JUNE 22-29, 2019

Catholics across the United States are encouraged to pray and act in support of religious liberty at home and abroad during Serving Others in God's Love: Religious Freedom Week 2019, which begins on June 22, the Feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, and ends on June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul.

The chairman of the USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty states: "Religious freedom allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God's love in ministries like education, adoption and foster care, health care, and migration and refugee services. We encourage people of faith to reflect on the importance of religious freedom so that we might have the space to carry out our mission of service and mercy, and we invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who face intense persecution in other parts of the world." Resources for Religious Freedom Week and other religious liberty resources can be found at: www.usccb.org/ReligiousFreedomWeek and www.usccb.org/freedom

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston ever year.

In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national

Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state.

President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

What is the Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby?

It’s a signature annual fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Illinois! Mark your calendars for the 13

th Annual Windy City Rubber

Ducky Derby on Thursday, August 8, 2019. Thousands of spectators will join us as more than 70,000 yellow rubber ducks splash into the Chicago River from the Columbus Drive Bridge and race to the finish line.

Ducks Adoptions are only $5 for one entry, a Quack Pack is $25 for six entries, Flock of Ducks (24 Ducks for $100) or Diamond Duck Pack (240 Ducks for $1,000.00).

Be sure to join us on race day at the Family Festival located outside the Wrigley Building (400 N. Michigan Ave.). We’ll have face painting, games, free food and appearances by several sports mascots! Its fun for the entire family, and it’s all for a great cause—the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois!

Have you ever seen 70,000 rubber ducks drop off a bridge into the

Chicago River and race towards the finish line? Well, we can promise you it’s an amazing sight!

For the past nine years, Special Olympics Illinois has held the Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby in downtown Chicago, raising more than $1.5 million for the 23,000 Special Olympic athletes in Illinois.

How can you help?

Adopt a duck for only $5 at www.duckrace.com/chicago or get together a group of friends, co-workers or family and start a team. There are no minimums to sell and no financial commitment required in order to be involved. You’ll have the opportunity to win fun prizes, attend our team kick-off party in early June and best of all, your support enables the over 23,000 athletes and 20,000 young athletes to participate in Special Olympics Illinois programs and the sports of their choice, at no cost.

What if my Duck wins? You could be the winner of one of our great prizes including a 2019 Chevy Equinox, $2,500 cash or an All-Inclusive Apple Vacation to Cancun!

In the United States, the first modern Father's Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia.

It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the

service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December.

This explosion killed 361 men, many of their fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother's Day, which was recently celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away.

Dear Friends and Family, The Knights of Columbus Waukegan Council 731 is pleased to announce our 9th Annual Father’s Day Golf Outing on Saturday, June 15th, 2019. This year’s event once again will be held at the beautifully remodeled Big Oaks Golf Course in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, and will include various contests, raffles and prizes. The event will be followed with a dinner that is included. Our Knights of Columbus Waukegan Council 731 represents three Catholic parishes in Waukegan and North Chicago. With the support and generosity of local businesses, our Council has raised over $25,000 annually for charitable area non-profit organizations. Some of these organizations include: Holy Family Food Pantry, Holy Family SPRED (Religious education for the developmentally challenged), St. Dismas SPRED, Countryside Association (Little City), Ann M. Kiley Development Center, Haitian relief and other Knights of Columbus Charities. While we will continue our efforts in supporting these and other local organizations, our focus for the Annual Father’s Day Golf Outing will be and always has been to raise money for Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan to assist Lake County families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. In 2019, the Knights of Columbus Waukegan Council 731 will once again partner with the Holy Family Food Pantry to bring these holiday meals to local families in need. This partnership has resulted to date with over 3600 families being able to celebrate the holiday season with a warm meal. The need is still overwhelming, and our goal, with your support, is to add another holiday to the list and sponsor 700 meals this year. We kindly ask for your support in reaching this goal by donating to the Knights of Columbus Waukegan Council 731 and our Annual Father’s Day Golf Outing. If you or your business would like to donate towards this event, we would certainly look forward to working with you. This is an opportunity to promote your business while making a difference in your community. There are many ways you can help continue to make this event a success and assist us in reaching our goal. Monetary contributions towards the catering and other gift donations towards raffle and contest prizes are also very much appreciated. Please feel free to contact me at (847)736-7530 or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding this event. Donation opportunities include:

Hole sponsorships: Includes a plaque at either the tee or green with your company logo and information displayed as well as any message you would like to convey. Beverage Cart Sponsorships, Food and Beverage Sponsorships: Include your company logo in our program with the same information as you could place on the course plaque. And of course the Raffle and Contest Sponsorships .
