Élos Soft plates have the refined and sinuous profile of a wave that gives personality and importance to the environments; Élos Smart plates are characterized by essential and modern lines that blend in with any furnishing style.

Élos was selected in 2003 as one of the best products competing in the Design section of the prestigious Intel Design “Augusto Morello” award.

The design of Chiara is the expression of the best Italian creativity combined with the excellence of the ABB technological and production processes. Chiara has a very broad appeal and enhances any environment, from the most sophisticated to the most essential one, with a range of components that allow you to design the main application solutions in residential and tertiary environments. Flexibility is one of Chiara’s characteristics, also in terms of installation.

Chiara, the name says it all: light and harmony. The elegant white pushbuttons and devices are immersed in the evocative colors of the plates: white, sand, stone, volcano and the pastel shades. The devices are 22 mm wide devices and can be fitted into all round (60 mm diameter) and rectangular flush-mounting boxes. The supports and the plates are available in two, three, four and seven module versions that can be fitted respectively into the standard rectangular two, three, four and six module boxes.

During power cuts the extractable lamp can be of practical use: it turns on automatically in the event of an interruption to the power supply and can also be used as a torch.

Élos and Chiara combine looks with safety for people and property: against overloads, short circuits and overvoltages specific protection devices should be installed that range from thermal overload and residual current circuit breakers to overvoltage limiters; in case of leaks of methane and LPG, dangers and damage must be prevented by detection and warning devices, detectors and warning repeaters that close the solenoid valve.

Élos, the ABB wiring accessories series The components range

All the products in the range for which conformity to the specific standards is required have obtained the IMQ mark.

Sockets2P+G 10-16 A plug versions for 250 V lines are available in Ita-lian and German standards, with safety shutters and side/central earth. The range also includes interlock sockets, standard Euro-pean and American shaver sockets, SELV sockets for very low voltage safety sockets and other special sockets. Various types of connectors for telephone and data transmissions are available complying with the most frequently used and advanced interna-tional wiring standards.

Control devices One and two-way switches, pushbuttons, reversing switches, relays and change-over switches in different versions to configu-re functions and control points of the devices in the most flexible and suitable way for each residential and working context. The range includes devices with warning lights to indicate the status of the controlled devices used for night-time localization; articles fitted with a key make it possible to limit their usage according to specific conditions. The torpedo and ampoule-shaped bulbs for warning light devices must be ordered separately; the codes are listed amongst the accessories.

Key covers To identify available functions and connected devices with different symbols. They are used to replace the standard keys supplied with control devices. In 1 and 1/2 module versions.

Protection devices These come into action in the event of overloads, short circuits, power surges and other phenomena that are hazardous for the users and prevent the connected devices from functioning correctly. They provide protection downstream without interfering with the power supply to other points on the electric plant.

For each of the two lines, Élos Soft and Élos Smart, a wide range of devices, plates and accessories are available; in the order quote the codes of the line that you wish to install, referring to chapters 2 and 3 of this catalog.

Warning devices Warning lights to indicate the operating status of the connected devices, bells and buzzers (also available in one single device). The path light is used as a courtesy light to illuminate pedestrian paths and areas, for example, corridors, garages, cellars, etc. The torpedo and ampoule-shaped bulbs fitted to the warning lights must be ordered separately; the codes are listed amongst the accessories.

Devices for safety and comfort To optimize the functioning of the electrical devices and increase the comfort of the environment, the range includes devices for programming, adjustment and timing, thermostats and electronic programmable thermostat and clocks. In the event of methane or LPG gas leaks the detectors automatically close the solenoid valve that they are connected, to stop delivery and prevent dangerous situations; the alarm can be extended in many points with the signal repeater. The anti black-out lamp switches on in case of interruption in the power supply and provides light for 4.5 hours. If the lamp is removed from its socket it can be used as a torch.

IP40 and IP55 boxes The IP40 boxes conform to CEI 23-48 and extend the Élos field of application where standard CEI 64-8 requires an IP40 degree of protection. The IP55 containers conform to standard CEI 23-48 and enable Élos to be used in particularly deman-ding environments in which there is dust or flammable fluids in conformity to standards EN 60079 and CEI 64-2. In both versions, they are available in RAL 7035 grey and are made of self-extinguishing and fire-resistant thermoplastic material (650 °C wire test) in accordance with IEC 60695-2-1 standard; they guarantee dimensional stability between -20 to 85 °C, high resistance to UV rays, impacts, heat and to chemical and atmospheric agents.

Installation components Blank module for unused modules and 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 module supports for installing devices and components in rectangular flush-mounted boxes, one-pole plates with box for profiled sections.

Materials and finishes of the plates Élos Soft plates are available in glass in both satin and glossy versions; those in metal and technopolymer have a glossy finish, also in the mica-colors version. The metal plates are also supplied with special surface treatments: glossy chrome, brushed steel, natural zama, and glossy gold. Élos Smart plates are made in technopolymer with mica-colors versions and a satin finish. An Élos Soft 3 module plate measures 121 x 86 x 14 mm and an Élos Smart 3 module plate version measures 119 x 88 x 13 mm.

Accessories Complementary articles and spare parts for devices and components in the range are available.


IP55 covers They conform to CEI 23-48, with protection grade guaranteed and defined by standard EN60529 (CEI 70-1). They are available in white and anthracite and are self-supporting.

Control devices One-way switches, pushbuttons, two-way switches, reversing switches, relays and change-over switches in different versions to configure utility functions and control points in the most flexible and suitable way for each residential and working context. All the control devices, except for relays and change-over switches, have a warning light. The bulb fitted to them must be ordered separately. The codes are listed amongst the accessories.

Chiara residential series includes a wide range of articles: devices, plates and accessories. All the products in the range have obtained the IMQ mark as required to compy with current reference standards.

Comfort devices To optimize the functioning of the electrical devices and increase the comfort of the environments, the range includes devices for programming, adjustment and timing, such as thermostats and electronic programmable thermostat and dimmers. The anti black-out lamp switches on in the event of a power cut and provides light for 4.5 hours. If the lamp is removed from its socket it can be used as a torch.

Installation instructions for systems with relays and luminous pushbuttonsLEDs and lamps have to be parallel connected. In addition, the LEDs have to be mounted in phase with all the cathodes, which are identified by the cables marked “ABB 230V” that are connected to phase or neutral.By using the one-pole step-by-step relays 2CSE1012EL, it is possible to connect up to nine LEDs and up to four fluorescent lamps: adding a 0.94μF capacitor to the heads of the relay enables up to twelve fluore-scent lamps to be connected.By using the two-pole step-by-step relays 2CSE1013EL, it is possible to connect a LED or two fluorescent lamps: adding a 1.41μF capacitor to the heads of the relay enables up to twelve fluorescent lamps to be connected.

Key covers Customization of keys of control appliances Élos wiring accessories series enables control devices to be personalized thanks to the wide range of key covers that are available. They are very easy to replace as they do not require special tools and components do not have to be dismantled. The control appliances can be customized both for devices with a one-module key and for those with a half-module key. The range comprises key covers with/without function warning and with/without symbols.

The residual current function with 10 mA sensibility acts also in the pre-sence of non-sinusoidal fault currents (alternating currents mixed with monodirectional pulsed currents).

As prescribed by the plants standard, they are particularly suitable for protecting:- terminal devices in places in which there is a greater risk of electrocu-

tion (baths, showers, etc)- sockets that supply class I devices with electronic circuits- sockets for portable appliances in domestic and similar environments

(irons, drills, etc).

The automatic or residual current trip switch that is interlocked with the socket supplies power to the holes only after the plug has been inserted and automatically disconnects power from the sockets before the plug is completely removed.The plug is then inserted and is always extracted without an electric arc.The lever of the circuit breaker can be closed only after the plug has been inserted, without the plug the lever does not have any effect and does not therefore close the circuit breaker.Interlocked sockets with automatic residual current switching have:- supply voltage: 230 V~ - 50 Hz- residual current (sensibility): IΔn 10 mA- operation dependent on network voltage: must be installed downstre-

Plug sockets for dedicated lines The plug sockets for dedicated lines enable the socket points to be diffe-rentiated according to particular applications, avoiding incorrect connec-tion of devices that are not intended to be connected.Different coloring of the cases (red, orange, green) distinguishes them from the common current sockets.There are no longer prescription on the correspondence between the co-lor of the socket and the type of supply. To distinguish the application range the following conventions are used.

Red: continuous supply with UPS (uninterruptable power supply) through an isolating transformer.

Orange: supply protected by mains-power unit through an isolating transformer.

Green: safety supply with mains-power unit.

Shaving socketThe shaving socket of Élos wiring accessories series has protection against overloads that disconnects the main circuit if the power supply exceeds 20VA. The socket in fact contains a 20VA power insulation tran-sformer that resists short-circuits and is supplied by a pushbutton that is driven directly by the plug inserted into the socket.

After the device has cooled, it is reinserted automatically.

Standard CEI 64-8 states that in the case of appliances for domestic and similar use the shaver socket can be installed in non-dusty environments and where no special protection against water penetration is required.

Double insulation separates the secondary supply circuit, to which the so-cket cells are connected, and the primary circuit, to enable the elimination of additional protection on the socket cells.

TV/SAT coaxial socketsThe recent evolution of television transmission systems and services to the user has made it necessary to increase the level of performance and quality in terms of signal distribution systems.The new EN 50083 reference standards (distribution systems via cable for television and sound signals) define the European standard, prescri-bing the requirements for the system components, including the terminal sockets.The coaxial TV/SAT sockets of Élos wiring accessories series enable the devices to be connected to audio and video analogue and digital signal distribution systems, whether satellite, terrestrial and cable on bands between 5 and 2400MHz. This ensures optimum distribution of the ana-logue and digital signals, as requested by providers for access to the services.

The socket shutters are enclosed in metal cases and conform to current regulations and protect the sockets from EMC in the environment.The direct sockets enable the remote voltage/current supply and the con-trol signals to be transmitted to the user port (max. 24V – 500mA). The 75 ohm resistance (code 2CSE1610EL) enables terminal sockets to be made in combination with through sockets. The TV/SAT coaxial sockets with 5 dB attenuation (sockets with conditional use) are special through sockets.The input port must always be connected to a 75 ohm load (SAT receiver, television, video recorder or other 75 ohm devices).

Terminals 3 and 4 are connected by the contact inside the telephone (closed when the handset is on the base). Disconnecting the receiver interrupts the line downstream (L1), ensuring the confidentiality of the conversation.

Each socket takes the signal from the line (there is no conversation se-cret).

Note: extracting one of the plugs causes the sockets downstream to be disconnected. To prevent this, it suffices to insert a plug into the socket from which the telephone was removed with a jumper between the ter-minals 3 and 4.

Adaptor for connectors of structured cablingThe structured cabling systems for data transmission are distinguished by flexibility of use, commissioning that is independent of the location and use of the terminal outputs. The suppliers of components and systems for structured cabling, in terms of systems of a certain complexity and extent, must be able to supply conformity certification for the installation, either directly or through accredited fitters.ABB meets this need through the adaptor of Élos wiring accessories series, which is compatible with different Keystone connectors that are available on the market. This makes it possible to integrate Élos wiring accessories series and the components for the transmission of data of the structured cabling systems.

- Sensibility (operating current) of 10mA and ability to operate even in the presence of non-sinusoidal fault currents (alternating currents and mo-no-directional pulsating currents) enable the protection devices of the Élos range to be classified as “type A” residual current circuit breaker (identified by the symbol ), which are particularly suitable to protect:• terminal devices where there is a greater risk of electrocution (baths,

showers, etc), as prescribed by CEI regulations;• sockets that supply class I devices with electronic circuits (computers

and accessories, electronic scales, electronic typewriters, cash regi-sters, etc.). In domestic and tertiary-sector networks non-sinusoidal fault currents often occur due to the use of electronic cards in dome-stic appliances.

- The electromagnetic part of the circuit breakers ensures protection against overloads and short-circuits; the residual current protection of the devices, for current values of 10mA, ensures protection of people against contact voltages.

- To close the circuit: press the circuit breaker manually at the symbol “I”.- To open the circuit:

• manual, press the circuit-breaker leaver at the symbol “0” or the yellow test key;

• automatically, for tripped thermal overload protection (overload), magnetic protection (short-circuit) or residual corrent protection (earth fault current).

- The device must not be used as an operating switch.- To check that the circuit breaker has been installed and is operating

correctly: press the yellow test key every month. If the device is correctly installed and supplied, the circuit breaker is tripped. If this does not hap-pen, contact the technician who installed the circuit breaker because safety has been compromised. After the test, press the main switch at symbol “I” to reset the circuit breaker.

Surge arresters The surge arrestor is a varistor arrestor that protects a terminal circuit from surges caused by operations or atmospheric discharges that entail a risk for personal safety and compromise the correct operation of the connected devices. The varistore absorbs the surge peak when the voltage value is greater than the striking value. The surge peak does not reach the device or rea-ches it much diminished. If the varistore develops a fault (indicated by the relative LED switching off), a fuse prevents a short-circuit.

Acoustic warning devicesThe multipurpose acoustic warning devices are designed to provide two signals that are easy to distinguish (e.g. pushbutton call to bathroom rod and entry bell).

The wiring diagram can be altered to obtain a three-tone sound (mi, fa, sol) or a buzz. Operating mode

The thermostat has three different operating modes: - AUTOMATIC- MANUAL- OFF/ANTIFREEZE/PROTECTION AGAINST HIGH TEMPERATURES To switch from one mode to another, use the MODE key.

Automatic operation In automatic mode the thermostat uses a

program that can be set by the user that can also be different for each day of the week. The message AUTO appears on the display together with the measured ambient tem-perature and the set point symbol for the current quarter hour. In the time profile the column flashes that shows the current time and the active set point.

Manual operation In manual mode the thermostat uses a tem-

perature set point permanently, which can be set freely by the keys .

The message MAN and the measured am-bient temperature appear on the display.

Antifreeze and protection functions The antifreeze and high-temperature protec-

tion functions are active respectively in he-ating and conditioning mode. In these two cases the thermostat uses an antifreeze/hi-gh-temperature protection temperature set point. The message OFF and the measured ambient temperature appear on the display.

Electronic dimmer with rotary control for resistive and inductive loads The electronic dimmers with rotary control for resistive and inductive loadsof Élos range are equipped with a two-way switch that makes it possible to switch on and switch off the connected devices from a second point (by two-way switch itself) or from several points (by reversing switches). Pressing the knob of the devices switches it on or off; rotating the knob adjusts the level of light. Methane gas detectorsThe gas detectors of Élos range are suitable for detecting, in a domestic environment, concentrations of unusual levels of methane gas that are nevertheless well below the hazard threshold. These detectors have:- tin dioxide semiconductor sensor- output relay with hermetic contacts for controlling solenoid valve for

checking gas- acoustic/luminous alarm warningThe devices operate only in the presence of supply voltage. If there is no supply voltage or during installation, they delay their functioning by about a minute to enable the electronic components to stabilize.

The tin dioxide semiconductor sensor reaches full power after 10 days of being supplied with power.

Operation

When the detector is first switched on it runs through the initialization phase for about 60seconds, during which the device is not ope-rational.

At the end of the initialization phase the detector is ready for normal operation.

In the event of a detector sensor fault the green LED and the yellow LED shine with a fixed beam.

Alarm device.As soon as the alarm threshold is exceeded the green and red LEDs light up and the acoustic alarm is set off. After 20 seconds the relay switches (solenoid-valve command).

At the end of the alarm the detector returns automatically to normal operating status.

WARNING! If there is an alarm:1 - Extinguish all naked flames.2 - Shut off the gas meter stop cock.3 - Do not switch lights on or off; do not use electrically powered appliances or devices.4 - Open doors and windows to increase the ventilation of the environment.

If the alarm stops, identify the cause of the alarm and take the necessary measures. If the alarm continues and the cause of the presence of gas cannot be identified or eliminated, leave the building and from outside alert the emergency services.

WARNING! you may smell gas before the appliance sets off the alarm.

Application examplesThe gas detector does not exonerate users from complying with all the rules governing the features, installation and use of gas appliances, ven-tilation of premises and the evacuation of combustion products prescri-bed by the regulations implementing article 3 of law 1083/71 and legal provisions.

Installation instructionsThe detector must be installed only by authorized technicians in strict compliance with the information set out below. The IP40 degree of pro-tection refers exclusively to the appliance in normal installation conditions.Warning! Do not install the detector near cooking appliances, sinks, extractor fans and in any places where ambient conditions may affect the detector’s efficiency.

Manually reset solenoid valve for gas systems Manually reset solenoid valve for gas systems of the Élos range is a valve of the normally open type. If the coil is supplied, the closing device is trip-ped to interrupt the flow of gas. The electric pulse to the coil can be sent by a gas-leak detector, by a safety thermostat or by other appliances. In the event of activation of the valve, check the cause and above all check that there are no gas leaks; the solenoid valve can be reset manually by lifting the knob above the coil.Operation of the device and safety are not compromised by any buzz from the solenoid valve when it is supplied: this is an operating feature of the valve supplied with alternating current that is used for the system’s acoustic alarm.

Extractable anti black-out lamp Extractable power-cut lamp miniaturized electronic device patented by ABB that can be used as:- a source of auxiliary lighting in the event of a power cut, pluggin the

device in a supplied socket.- the device is plugged into a power point to be charged and can then be

unplugged and be used as a pocket flashlight.

The lamp can be plugged into Schuko and P10, P11 P17/11, P30, P30/17 sockets.It should be used in domestic settings (preferably one per room) as a source of auxiliary lighting in the event of black-out.

FeaturesThe extractable anti black-out lamp is plugged into a socket and can also be used as a source of auxiliary lighting in the event of a power cut thanks to the rechargeable buffer batteries.It can be recharged:- with the auxiliary lighting function disabled (circuit breaker in position

“0” and red LED on) to prevent the lamp turning on if there is a power cut;

- with the auxiliary lighting function enabled (circuit breaker in position “I” and green LED on) to enable the lamp to come on if there is a in the event of a power cut and switch off automatically when the power supply is restored.

The two LEDs on the front part indicate lamp status when it is powered up:- the red LED indicates that recharging is in progress and that the lamp

will not come on in the event of a black-out (battery-saving status, pre-ferable in the event of prolonged power cuts);

- the green LED indicates that recharging is in progress and that the lamp will come on in the event of a black-out and switch off automatically when power is restored.

IR movement detector The IR movement detector of the Élos range perceives heat variations, closing, in function of the ambient light, the contact of a relay. After the movement, the contact reopens automatically after an adjustable preset time. To prevent its being tripped when it is not necessary, the device has a twilight sensor with an adjustable tripping threshold.The appliance is designed to control small fluorescent lamps directly that have no power-factor correction or similar loads. The appliance is not designed for fluorescent lamps with a power-factor correction capacitor.

Interlocked sockets with automatic thermal overload protection. These sockets should be installed in plant terminations to protect the electric load supplied by the socket from the dangers of short-circuits and overloads and to protect the user from contact voltages.

Residual current circuit breaker with 10 mA sensibility also intervenes in the presence of non sinusoidal fault currents (alternating currents mixed with monodirectional pushbutton currents).

As prescribed by the plants standard, they are particularly suitable for protecting:- terminal devices in places in which there is a greater risk of electrocution

(baths, showers, etc)- sockets that supply class I devices with electronic circuits- sockets for portable appliances in domestic and similar environments

(irons, drills, etc).

Instructions on installation and operationTo use in dry and non dusty places.- Temperature between -5 °C and +40 °C.- Suitability of installation upstream of a socket or appliance to protect

the appliances against overloads and short-circuits and at the same time protect users against contact voltages.

- Sensibility (operating current) of 10mA and ability to operate even in the presence of non sinusoidal fault currents (alternating currents and mono-directional pulsing currents) enable the protection devices of the Chiara range to be classified as “type A” residual current circuit breaker (identified by the symbol ), which are particularly suitable for for protecting:

• terminal devices in places in which there is a greater risk of electrocution (baths, showers, etc), as prescribed by CEI regulations; • sockets that supply class I devices with electronic circuits (computers and accessories, electronic scales, electronic

typewriters, cash registers, etc.). In domestic and tertiary-sector networks non-sinusoidal fault currents often occur that are due to the use of electronic cards in domestic appliances.

- The electromagnetic part of the circuit breakers ensures protection against overloads and short-circuits; the residual current part of the devices, for current values of 10mA, ensures protection of people against contact voltages.

- Closing the circuit: press the circuit breaker manually at the symbol “I”.- Opening the circuit: • manual, press the circuit-breaker leaver at the symbol “0” or the

yellow test key; • automatically, for tripped thermal overload protection (overload),

magnetic protection (short-circuit) or residual current protection (ground fault current).

- The device must not be used as an operating switch.- To check that the circuit breaker has been installed and is operating

correctly: press the yellow test key every month. If the device is correctly installed and supplied, the circuit breaker is

tripped. If this does not happen, contact the technician who installed the circuit breaker because safety has been compromised. After the test, press the main switch at symbol “I” to reset the circuit breaker.

- Thermomagnetic intervention with characteristic “C” (see time/current automatic tripping curves set out below).

- Two-pole circuit breaking with one protected pole + N, type A for alter-nating fault currents and monodirectional pushbuttons.

- Operating current (sensibility) IΔn 10mA; the circuit-breaker connection must comply with the wiring diagram set out below.

circuit-breaker input (for example in three-phase 380V~ systems the circuit breaker prevents incorrect ‘phase-phase’ connection instead of “phase-neutral”).
