Background – insulin & glucose
Glucose is a carbohydrate and the most important simple sugar in human metabolism
Two sources of glucose: food & liver Used as a source of energy for cells Brains main source of fuel Pancreas (B cells) secrete insulin Insulin takes glucose from the blood
stream into the cells.
Pre-diabetes
Fluctuations of blood glucose levels Might not be indicative of diabetes
Type II diabetes
Cells become resistant to the action of insulin
Pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance
Type I diabetes
Combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors
Auto immune disorder
Risk factors
Type II Weight Inactivity Age Race Gestational diabetes Polycystic ovary syndrome

Type 1 Genetics Environment Presence of damaging immune
system cells Race Geography
Type II – symptoms
Frequent urination Thirst Extreme hunger Unusual weight loss Fatigue
Type I – symptoms
All the symptoms of Type II are applicable
Frequent infections Blurred vision Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal Tingling/numbness on feet/hands
Complications
