The area now known as Chesterfield Valley was formerly known as Gumbo Flats. Located at the intersection of what is now Chesterfield Airport Road and Long Road, Gumbo was named after its rich soil, which although was wonderful for farming, turned into gumbo mud when wet. Gumbo’s mud was used to make a type of gravel that was used for the streets and sidewalks in Forest Park for the 1904 World’s Fair. Until it was razed in 1998, the Twenty-Five Mile House, which was named because of its distance from downtown St. Louis, had been a notable Gumbo landmark, for years.

In 1937 the Chesterfield Mercantile Company opened at the end of what was then, a long dirt road. This area landmark is now known as the Smokehouse Market.

In the 1950’s Rosemary Rombach began selling produce from the family farm at a small vegetable stand along the roadside. Through the years the farm started growing & selling pump-kins and added family activities—which made Rombach Farm the popular fall destination that it remains today.

In late 1958 and early 1959, Paul D. Haglin, an aviator and private pilot became frustrated at the high volume of air traffic at Lambert Field. He researched the possibility of another airpark, started viewing various sites that could serve the needs of general aviation and business, and found the perfect location in Gumbo. In 1964, Spirit Airport was opened.

In 1993, heavy rains and rising rivers brought big change to the valley. Flood waters spilled through a section of the levee, filling the entire Chesterfield Valley with more than 8 feet of flood water and debris. After the water receded, some businesses abandoned the area for higher ground while others cleaned up and rebuilt. In 1994, work began to raise the levee's flood protec-tion by increasing the height of the levee, widening it, and adding seepage berms, gates and flood walls. The city of Chesterfield created a tax-increment financing district to rebuild the levee and revitalize the area. Developers saw potential for this prime location and, as a result, Chesterfield Valley has become one of the region's hottest retail markets. Its success has spurred other cities to develop their flood plains, as well.

The Chesterfield Valley that we’ve come to know and love includes The Commons, the largest outdoor shopping center in America…a 200 acre golf course, biking trails, hotels, execu-tive and medical offices, a cinema, unique shops, many services and a variety of restaurants that are sure to appeal to every taste.
