“Every time I go to Israel it is in

many ways like going home, it is

welcoming and comfortable to be

in the only country where what

we do as Jews is the norm and

the way of life.”

Charlie Niederman

I am excited to lead our trip to

Israel this upcoming April! I’ve designed this trip for both

newcomers and experienced visitors to Israel. You are

welcome to join us whether you are a member of Temple

Beth David or just feel a connection to our community.

We will explore the

Old City of Jerusalem

with its sacred sites to

Judaism, Christianity,

and Islam. There will

be festive Shabbat cel-

ebrations. In Jerusa-

lem, we’ll enjoy a tasting tour of the Arab market and en-

joy shopping opportunities. There will be unique opportu-

nities to learn about the religious diversity of Israel in his-

tory and current day.

In Haifa, we’ll learn about the Druze community,

view the famous Baha’i Gardens, and learn about the

plight of Jewish refugees coming to the land before it be-

came a state. We’ll enjoy wine tasting and great Israeli

food.

Then in Tel Aviv, we will stand with

Israel as the Memorial Day siren

sounds all over the country and visit

the Rabin center. This is dedicated

to the history of democracy in Israel.

And we will celebrate Israel’s

birthday with music and dancing as fireworks light up the

sky.

On the Western Wall: “Y ou see pictures of it in books, and

in the news you see people praying there, but when you

are right next to it and can touch it, a whole different feel-

ing came over me…I just stared at the wall and realized

Israel is my home as well as the United States and I will

always feel that way.” Lynne Horn

Wednesday night, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m.

I hope you can join us.

I agree that visiting Israel can seem like going home, but

one where there is always something new to learn or see,

even in such a small country. Cathy Niederman

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!

By Anne Farber, Sisterhood President

SISTERHOOD MATTERS…

What an enjoyable membership brunch many

of us attended last month. Love the new

addition to my garden.

Sisterhood is sponsoring the back page of the

new Temple Member Directory. Look for yours

at the Hanukkah carnival. Speaking of the

carnival, we have 27 vendors for the boutique

and many new items purchased for the gift shop,

plus delicious latkas and brotherhood's bar-b-q,

game booths and much more.

We are dedicating the carnival/boutique in

memory of Edie Schwartz who spent many years

organizing this annual event. Please plan to attend

the carnival. Much work goes into planning the

carnival and we appreciate your support.

Hope you had an opportunity to browse the

historian’s scrap book. Phyllis is a pro at this!

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I want

to extend wishes for a wonderful holiday from

your board of directors.

Shalom ,

Anne Farber, President

In what turned out to be a follow up to last month's

article I attended a lecture at the Alpert J.C.C. by Dr.

Steven Spiegel (UCLA) on “The Middle East and the

Trump Administration." He did not feel that US

Ambassador to Israel, David Freeman, was really a

player in the Trump administration. His main theme

was that Donald Trump really wants to conclude an

Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty. According to Dr.

Spiegel, a special envoy has been sent to work with

both sides. To say I'm skeptical is an understatement.

The leaders of the American Conservative and

Reform movements will meet shortly with the Prime

Minister Netanyahu to push for restoration of the

2016 agreement to create an egalitarian prayer area at

the Kotel (Western Wall). It probably will be a less

than cordial meeting.

Both the Economist and New Yorker have run

articles about Avi Gabbay, the new leader of the

Labor Party, elected in a July primary. Gabbay is the

seventh of eight children of a Morrocan immigrant

family who rose to head Bezeq, the internet service

provider for most Israelis, after it was privatized. His

prior experience in politics was working with the

founders of Kulanu, a political party whose primary

issues are improving the economic condition of the

lower middle class. It is part of the ruling coalition

and although he was not a Knesset member,

Netanyahu appointed him to be Environmental

Protection Minister. He broke with Netanyahu when

the coalition took a turn to far right and resigned in

protest over the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman

as Minister of Defense. In December last year he

joined Labor. Traditionally, Labor leaders have come

from the military, the Kibbutz Movement, or labor

movements; so he has broken that mold. He has

initiated changes in policy that move Labor to the

center, and now Labor shows new strength in polls.

In the next election, if he continues on his current

path, Labor stands a realistic chance of creating its

own ruling coalition. As the Economist put it,”The

anomaly of Israeli politics is that a majority of voters

supports the left’s two-state solution but continues to

vote for right-wing leaders. Perhaps that will change

if Labour is led by a right-winger."

There is a bill in the Knesset, initiated by14

members from mostly far right religious parties, that

addresses the "Basic Law: Israel - The Nation-State

of the Jewish People" often referred to in pleadings

before Israel's Supreme Court as "Basic Law" and in

the Knesset bill as the "Nation-State." This law and

related legislation now being proposed in the Knesset

is the result of Israel not having a constitution after

nearly 70 years of trying.

The provisions of the bill are extensive and it is

highly controversial. It purports to advance the

principles Israel's Declaration of Independence that

describes the state as democratic and pluralistic.

One area of extreme concern is the addition of

Halakhic Law (Jewish Law) as part of the basis for

court decisions. Defense Minister Avigdor

Lieberman, who is the leader of Yisrael Beiteinu that

is not a friend of the left, was critical of the bill,

saying he feared it would be used to turn Israel into a

state governed by halakha, Jewish religious law. He

said, “I have great difficulty with the nation-state law.

Instead of turning Israel into a Jewish state they’re

trying to turn it into a halakhic state,” Lieberman

continued that "our position is to take the Declaration

of Independence and legislate it.”

He was referring to the provision which specifies that

courts rule “in light of the principles of Jewish law”

in the absence of clear legislation or legal precedent.

This provision has been changed to a separate bill for

ordinary law, so it is not now part of the current

version of the Nation-State Basic Law bill and it can

be overruled. The Jewish Law provisions have been

criticized over concerns that they discriminate against

women, non-Jews and homosexuals.

A coalition of ten women's groups says the law could

undermine the status of Israeli women. The groups

fear that the effort to strengthen the state’s Jewish

characteristics by making religious law part of

modern law will be detrimental to women. They say,

“A number of bills being advanced in the Knesset

undermine the right to equality by granting

unprecedented status to religious law in Israel,” the

organizations also expressed their concern about

“giving halakha the power to affect the status of

numerous populations and substantially broadening

the authority of the rabbinical courts.”

We are sure to hear more about the Nation-State bill.

The High Holy Days are Over...

Now what?

You have experienced beautiful Jewish holidays....now what should you do to gain

part ownership of Temple Beth David? For, the best way to really be part of a

family is to PARTICIPATE in the life of that family. Here are some suggestions to

help you on your way. If you choose just ONE of these ideas, you will be a life long

member of the Temple Beth David family because you will own its spirit, its ruach.

Attend Shabbat services REGULARLY.

Join Brotherhood or Sisterhood (perhaps Brotherhood will open up to the female

gender, just as the Boy Scouts did!!)

Join the Choir (reading music not required).

If you work, attend weekend activities, such as Mind, Body, Spirit, or the special

programs that are offered regularly.

Be a Shabbat greeter.

If you do not work, attend Club 55 programs, Lunch and Learn with the Rabbi, or

volunteer to help in the office.

Tell Eileen Tobey you would LOVE to bake for oneg shabbats.

Find Lynn Horn or Debbie Lelchuk (no, they are not actually lost) and volunteer

to work on social action projects.

If you have children in religious school and/or youth groups, be an active parent.

There are probably more suggestions, but any one of these will put you well on your

way to BELONGING in the truest sense.

Shalom and love, Florence Florence Sudakow

The Temple Beth David Library is finally all cataloged and automated.

The Online Public Access Catalog will be on the Temple Beth David website soon. The Library will be completely organized sometime in November.

Once the catalog is up on the Temple’s website feel free to use. The library has 2,200 books and about

100 multimedia items.

To check out a book take the card out of the book pocket and write your name and phone number and

date of check out on the card. Put the card in a plastic box which will live in the wire basket. Take a card out of the plastic box and write the due date on the card and place it in the pocket in the book.

Check out is 4 weeks. When you return items to the library find the card in the plastic box return it to the

items pocket. Return the card in the items pocket to the plastic box.

Place the item on the black six shelf book truck. I will file the items away

once or twice a month.

To Our Temple Beth David Family:

As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of

services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent

economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to

the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money

on many purchases that you normally make!

We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more

than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then

will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on

the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as

well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some

examples of companies that participate in the program:

Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,

Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,

Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the

Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the

Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at

the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and

the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the

Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for

the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for

charitable organizations with this program.

Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through

Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet

search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will

also add up to real money for the Temple.

We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for

the generations to come.

With best regards,

Neil Kornswiet Eric Schiffer Nancy Meyers
