Paul Reddam. On Saturday, the Canadian-born, California-based business- man was on hand at Churchill Downs to watch his Red Rocks (Ire) stage the 10-1 upset in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf. That would be enough for most people to uncork the bubbly, but Reddam had rea- son to postpone the celebration. After making the 70-mile trip down to Lexington for yesterday=s Fasig-Tipton November Selected Mixed sale, Reddam watched as two fillies he raced set off pair of furious bidding duels. When the dust settled, it was Reddam=s mul- tiple Grade I winner Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band) that brought the sale=s top price of $3.4 million. The BBA Ireland=s Adrian Nicol made the winning bid. AIt=s for an interna- tional partnership, but that=s all I can say,@ said Nicol. The sale of Sharp Lisa came about two hours after Andujar (Quiet American), another filly that wore Reddam=s purple and white colors, was knocked down to My Meadowview Farm for $2.5 million. AI was sur- prised,@ admitted Reddam. AActually, I thought Andujar would bring more than Sharp Lisa. [But Sharp Lisa=s] got the bloodlines, she=s all racehorse and they made a good pur- chase. Dixieland Band is a great broodmare sire and having Dynaformer on her bottom side is great. She=s a Grade I winner on dirt and a Grade II winner on turf and she was all heart.@ Sharp Lisa, who was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, is out of the Dynaformer mare Winter=s Gone, a half to MGISW Bien Bien. Looking For Lisa... Purchased privately by Reddam and partners PabloSuarez and Mark Schlesinger after beginning her careerat Calder, Sharp Lisa ran second in the 2004 GIIAlcibiades S., then came back at three to annex the GILas Virgenes S. and GII Santa Ynez S. As a four-year-old of 2006, she also won the GII Santa Barbara S. onthe turf and, in her career finale, finished sixth in Satur-day=s GI Breeders= Cup Distaff. AShe ran very well yes-terday and was probably a little unlucky she wasn=tcloser,@ said Nicol, who did his bidding from the rearwalking ring. AWe liked her physique, we liked her page, and we like her racing ability. It=s very hard to buy thesesort of animals.@

Distorted Humor Gets a New Girlfriend... Add one Kentucky Oaks winner to the book of maresset to visit Distorted Humor in 2007. Bidding on behalfof WinStar Farm, Elliott Walden outlasted all competi-tion to land Summerly (Summer Squall), winner in2005, from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. AShe=s an awesome physical,@ said WinStar President

Doug Cauthen. AObviously, it=s agreat sale and it=s tough to buyanything. We=ve been trying tobid on some horses for BluegrassCat and Distorted Humor and wewere getting shut out a little bit,but we were happy to get thisone. We felt this was a mare wehad to get.@ Cauthen believes themating to Distorted Humor is apromising one. AShe=s got great

balance,@ he explained. AWe think it=s a great physicalmatch. [Distorted Humor] can go with so many kinds ofmares. He can go with a mare that=s 15.3 or a marethat=s 16.3. She=s right in the middle of that and wethink it could be a rocket ship.@ WinStar went deep intothe bidding on Sharp Lisa with the intent of sending herto Bluegrass Cat. WinStar bred Sharp Lisa from theDynaformer mare Winter=s Gone. WinStar has that marein foal to Storm Cat and also own and race Sharp Su-san (Touch Gold), a maiden winner over the Belmontturf Sept. 29.

Jackson Gets Hooked... Jess Jackson outlasted Betty Moran after an ex-tended bidding war to land hip 102, the 10-year-oldmare Hookedonthefeelin (Citidancer). Consigned byTaylor Made for the ClassicStar dispersal, Jackson,

seated beside his advisor JohnMoynihan, responded to a $2.8-millionbid from Moran and company with a$2.9-million offer of his own andwalked away with the attractivechestnut, winner of the 1999 GI LaBrea S. AWe didn=t expect to have togo that high, but she=s a very beauti-ful mare--one of the best in the sale,@a smiling Jackson commented whilesigning the ticket. Added Moynihan,AShe=s a beautiful, beautiful mare, aGrade I winner, she has beautiful ba-bies. The two-year-old is a very nice

horse and we hope he is going to run well.@ Ownedduring her racing career by Mike Pegram,Hookedonthefeelin was logically bred in her first year atstud to Pegram=s Real Quiet, the 1998 Kentucky Derbyhero. The result was Pussycat Doll, a homebred forPegram who emulated her dam by winning last year=sLa Brea. For good measure, she tacked on a win in thisyear=s GI Humana Distaff H., upsetting stablemateBehaving Badly in the process. Pegram soldHookedonthefeelin in foal to Deputy Minister for$1.525 million to ClassicStar at the 2002 KeenelandNovember sale. Moynihan went to $600,000 for a two-year-old colt by Unbridled=s Song at last year=sKeeneland September sale. The dam of a Vindicationyearling of this year and a weanling by Unbridled=sSong, Hookedonthefeelin sold in foal to Distorted Hu-mor. Moynihan indicated that Stonestreet would sellthe subsequent produce from the mare.

>Lady= is a Star... Hill >n= Dale Bloodstock went to $1.3 million for thethree-year-old Diplomat Lady (Forestry), winner of lastterm=s GI Hollywood Starlet. Stationed to the right of

the press box on the secondfloor of the sale pavilion, Hill >n=Dale=s John Sikura fought offall challengers for the filly, whowas purchased for Aa group ofus guys,@ said Sikura. Out ofthree-time stakes-winnerPlaycaller (Saratoga Six), Diplo-mat Lady has won four of her12 starts for over $550,000 in

earnings. In addition to the Starlet, she captured the2006 GII Stonerside Beaumont S. at Keeneland in April. Most recently, she was second in her turf debut, theOct. 15 Harold C. Ramser Sr. H. at Santa Anita forowner Charles Cono. Cono sold the filly as hip 60through Taylor Made Sales Agency. AI just thought shewas really good value, being a Grade I winner,@ saidSikura when asked what attracted him to the filly. AIthought she was a $1.5 to $2 million mare, so in thismarket, I thought she was well bought. I really liked herphysically.@ Sikura said Diplomat Lady would stay intraining, but said a trainer had not been picked out.AWe=ll get her home and start all over on her,@ he said.AWe=ll figure it out from there. There=s no hurry.@ Askedif he thought one of his stallions matched her particu-larly well, and if he bought her with that in mind, Sikurasaid, AWe just try to buy a nice horse. If we have suc-cess [with her as a racehorse], we=ll continue for awhile. If not, we=ll bring her home and breed her, andwho knows what sire opportunities will be available atthat time.@ A $120,000 Keeneland September yearlingin 2004, Diplomat Lady resold for $400,000 as a Fasig-Tipton February juvenile to trainer Christopher Pasch, who conditioned the filly for Cono.

Skar-ing Off the Competition... He had some determined rivals bidding in the front ofthe sale pavilion, but Skara Glen Stables= Ira Gumbergheld fast and landed the lone offering in the sale he bidon, the Storm Cat filly Kamarinskaya. Gumberg pur-chased the three-year-old dark bay, who was catalogedas a racing or broodmare prospect, for $2.2 millionfrom the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. AI thoughtshe had the best page in the sale, and with her racerecord, we thought she was an outstanding broodmareprospect,@ said Gumberg, who did his bidding whileleaning against the rail of the rear walking ring. Theimpeccably bred Kamarinskaya was produced by Mr.P=s Princess, a Mr. Prospector half-sister to MGISWMenifee and MGISW Desert Wine, thus makingKamarinskaya a half to dual Group 1 winner and three-time champion Fasliyev. Bred by Pacelco S A and racedby Michael Tabor, Kamarinskaya lived up to her pedi-gree on the track. At two, she was twice placed instakes company while still a maiden, in the G3 C.L.Weld Park S. and in the Listed Flame of Tara EuropeanBreeders Fund S. She was still a maiden at three whenshe won the G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstownin her sophomore bow in April. She went unplaced inthe G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guin-eas) and the May 29 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas in whatwould be her final career start. AWe=re going to breedher [next year],@ confirmed Gumberg. AWe haven=t de-cided who we=ll go to, but I think with her pedigreesomebody like Mr. Greeley, a Gone West stallion, mightbe good.@ Skara Glen, an operation that breeds primarilyfor the sales, bred and sold this year=s GI Belmont S.hero Jazil.

What They’re Saying At The Sales...

Vacare Heading East... Lothenbach Stables= Vacare (Lear Fan) is headed tothe barn of Christophe Clement after Jon Kelly went to$2.8 million to acquire the GI Queen Elizabeth II Chal-

lenge Cup winner from theconsignment of DrewNardiello=s Chesapeake Farm.Kelly, who was the co-breeder and co-owner ofMGISW Borrego, had to workto attract the attention of theclosest bidspotter as hejumped into the fray at aboutthe $2-million mark, but suc-

cessfully saw off all bidders. AEverything,@ he respondedwhen asked what he liked about the three-year-old.AShe can be bred across the board. She a little small, reminded me a little bit of Megahertz, but she=s donewhat she needs to have done this year and I look for-ward to the next racing season. It=s pretty exciting.@Vacare will race for Kelly and his wife Sarah and DonCimpl. Added Nardiello, AIt=s over 100 times more thanwhat we turned down as a yearling and Mr. Lothenbachis ecstatic. She did everything we asked her to do as aracehorse. She=s a delight to be around, she=s pureclass. She=s one of the few fillies you saw here that hada shank over her nose and not a lip shank. It=s a puredelight to have raised a Grade I winner like this.@ Aperfect four-for-four in her young career, Vacare tookthe GII Pucker Up S. in addition to her QE II triumph. She has earnings of $466,000.

John Sikura, Hill >n= Dale Farms: AI saw a lot of horses bought back early in the sale. Ithink sometimes people have unreasonable expectations.Sometimes you take them home and that proves cor-rect, and sometimes you wished you would have sold. It=s a very fluid thing, values going up and down, andsometimes it takes years to see if you did the right orwrong thing.@

An Island Unto Himself... On more than one occasion, Island Fashion(Petionville) has been entered to sell at auction and onmore than one occasion, owner Jeff Nielsen decided tohang onto his prized mare, withdrawing her prior to thesales. Nielsen, who operates Everest Stables, finallyallowed the gray mare to go under the hammer atFasig-Tipton last night, but once again, Nielsen decidedto retain the mare, as she failed to meet her reservewhen bidding stalled out at an even $2 million. AWewere hoping for a little more than that,@ said PopeMcLean, whose Crestwood Farm consigned the six-year-old. AShe=s such a nice racemare and we felt shewas worth more than that. She was so versatile.@ IslandFashion proved to be one of the best of her generationin 2003, when she took the GI Alabama S. going 10furlongs at Saratoga and closed the season with avictory in the seven-furlong GI La Brea S., attractingmore than a few votes for an Eclipse Award. She racedon nicely at four, winningthe GI Santa Monica H. be-fore running second toSouthern Image in the GISanta Anita H. and alsoplaced twice in the GI JohnC. Mabee H. on the turf. Inthe end, it was too toughto part with the mare if themoney wasn=t there. AWehave mixed emotions aboutit,@ McLean continued. AI know Jeff would hate to seeher go, and maybe he=s somewhat happy that he stillhas her. She=s like a member of the family for theNielsens. It=s once in a lifetime that you have somethingthat good. In the long run, we=ll probably come out wayahead. Hopefully we=ll get a good foal out of her andthere=s no telling what that could bring.@ McLean addedthat Island Fashion would return to Crestwood Farmwhere a decision will be made on her immediate future.

First Things First for Reddam... Playing the warm-up act to Sharp Lisa was Andujar, who sold as hip 135. Reddam was sitting to the leftside of the sale pavilion when the Grade II winnerstepped into the ring, which, as it happened, put himright in the middle of the action. As bidding raced pastthe million-dollar mark, two groups near Reddam lockedhorns and went at it until Lincoln Collins, acting onbehalf of My Meadowview Farm=s Leonard Riggio, secured Andujar at $2.5 million. AShe=s a lovely, big, scopey mare,@ said Collins. ATo me, she=s everythingyou=d want to see in a broodmare. We=re starting abroodmare band, and this is the kind of mare youwant...if you can afford it.@ Collins said that Riggio, who sat alongside Collins with trainer Nick Zito, waslooking to start a Asmall but very selective@ band ofbroodmares who will most likely be based in Kentucky.Collins added that Andujar would be bred to A.P. Indy(AIf we can get to him,@ he said modestly), in part be-cause the A.P. Indy/Quiet American cross producedBernardini and A.P. Warrior. My Meadowview is bestknown as the owner of Noble Causeway. After thesale, Reddam was all smiles, but admitted to havingmixed emotions. AIt=s kind of bittersweet, because[Andujar] was a big favorite of mine,@ he said. AShe wasa fantastic mare and it was unfortunate that she gotinjured on the racetrack, because I thought her bestdays were ahead of her. I think she=s going to make agreat broodmare. If I were in that business, she=s theone I=d jump on.@ After beginning her career in Europe,Andujar was purchased privately by Reddam andbrought to America. She won three of her first fourstarts in the U.S., including a rousing seven-length tallyin the GII Milady BC H. in 2005. She also finished aclose-up third in last year=s GI Vanity H. On a nightwhen several high-profile lots failed to meet their re-serve, Reddam said he had come to Newtown Pad-docks to sell. AWe set a very low reserve, because weweren=t here to play games,@ he said. AThe folks at[consignor] Taylor Made said there was enough actionon her and weren=t really concerned about that. I wasconfident she=d bring over $2 million, but how far over,I didn=t know.@ In the 1980's TV show the A-Team,George Peppard=s ever-succinct character Hannibal usedto say AI love it when a plan comes together,@ and it=shard to think of a better way to sum up Reddam=sweekend. AThis is the best of all possible worlds, to buya horse privately for reasonable money, have a greattime racing them and then sell them for a big profit onthe end,@ Reddam said. AIt doesn=t get any better thanthat.@ A-men.

Close But No Cigar on Belva... Always a game performer, the four-year-old grassstar English Channel came up a bit short in Saturday=sGI Breeders= Cup Turf, finishing third behind Red Rocks

(Ire). It was a similar story yes-terday for his dam Belva, whowas led out of the Fasig-Tiptonsale ring unsold at $2 million.Things started quickly for theeight-year-old mare, in foal toHorse of the Year Ghostzapper, with bidding escalating pastthe seven-figure mark. Slowing

as the price neared $2 million, bidding stalled out com-pletely at that mark as auctioneer Terence Collier im-plored buyers for more, perhaps indicating the reservewas close to being surpassed. Charlie McKinlay, thefarm manager for owner and consigner Keene RidgeFarm, confirmed that was the case. AYeah, we weren=tfar away,@ he said. Hamming It Up... Tim Hamm, a leading trainer on the Ohio circuit, wentto $20,000 for a then two-year-old filly named RoseColored Lady (Formal Dinner) at the 1996 OBS AprilSale and made the most of that purchase, training herto eight wins, including one stakes success, for earn-ings of $139,294. As solid as she was as a racemare, the dark bay produced three stakes winners from herfirst three foals, the third of which is an Ohio-bred sonof Rubiano named Too Much Bling. A 19 1/2-lengthmaiden winner at second asking, Hamm and his family, which operate Blazing Meadows Farm, accepted anoffer from Stonerside Stables to sell an 80-percentinterest in the colt. In 2006, Too Much Bling has be-come one of the top sophomore sprinters, with wins inthe GII Carry Back S., the GII San Vicente S. and theGIII Bay Shore S. Yesterday, Hamm and his familyparted ways with Rose Colored Lady, selling her to JessJackson for $750,000. AShe was our first stakes win-ner that we ever raced and trained,@ Hamm explained.AIt=s sad to sell a horse that have been with you andthat have been good to you, but at the same time, she=s getting a great home. We have four daughters outof the mare, all stakes winners. She=s been great to us.No regrets.@ The conditioner also reflected on Satur-day=s GI Breeders= Cup Sprint. AIn that race, whoevergot the best trip--and [Saturday] maybe had the onehole--was going to have a big advantage. He ran a goodrace, he gets beat seven for all of it and three lengthsfor second and he had a lot of trouble, as did half thefield. But I thought he ran a good race.@ Hamm esti-mates that Blazing Meadows has made about $2.3million from their original $20,000 investment. Headded that Too Much Bling will likely be pointed for theGI Malibu S. at Santa Anita Dec. 26.

Honey Ryder Stays Put... Not seconds after the hammer dropped did JohnGreathouse have trainer Todd Pletcher on the phone. AI know it=s an imposition and all, but I want her back

with you as soon as possible.@He was speaking of HoneyRyder (Lasting Approval), whowas led out of the Fasig-Tiptonsales ring unsold after a finalbid of $1.8 million. AShe was-n=t anywhere close to selling,@Greathouse said, adding thatthey were Aa little more than

halfway there.@ Coming off her third-place finish behindOuija Board (GB) in Saturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Fillyand Mare Turf, Honey Ryder made a lovely appearancein the ring, and Greathouse is only too happy to hangon to her for a six-year-old campaign. AShe won $1million this year [$988,500], she won $1 million lastyear [$910,979],@ he said. AWe always felt that shewould be better at four than she was at three and asgood or better at five than she was at four and at sixthe same way. Todd remarked to me the other morning,>you find me another five-year-old with ankles and shinsand knees as cold as this mare.=@ And with that, it wasoff to an awaiting Sallee van. AShe leaves in the nextfive minutes to go right back over [to Churchill Downs]and it=s the last time she=ll ever go through a sales ring,@Greathouse stated unequivocally. AI tried to sell herthree times and haven=t had any luck yet. She=s veryspecial to us and it was a pretty easy decision for us[not to sell].@ Currently, Honey Ryder has 12 wins from27 starts, all on the grass, and earnings of $2,043,309.

BREEDERS’ CUPWRAP UP

NO PROBLEMS WITH OUIJA BOARD Connections of Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})have sent the mare on her travels after the five-year-old

was reported to be none the worse forSaturday=s exertions. Following her 21/4-length defeat of old foe Film Makerto record win number two in the GIBreeders= Cup F/M Turf at ChurchillDowns, the seven-time Group 1 winnerbegan her journey to Tokyo for theNov. 26 G1 Japan Cup, departing Lou-isville for New York yesterday. AThere isno problem at all with her and she=sgreat,@ said Robin Trevor Jones, assis-tant to trainer Ed Dunlop. AShe ate ev-erything on Saturday night and she did-n=t have a hard race at all. We=ll seehow she is in New York, but the main

plan now is to go and head off to Japan and have an-other crack at the Japan Cup.@ Lord Derby=s pride andjoy was fifth to Alkaased last year before winning theG1 Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin, and that contestshould see her sign off her career Dec. 10. AThe plan isto go to Hong Kong as well in December and at themoment she=s perfectly right,@ the assistant added.

ROUND POND TO RETURN IN 2007? Round Pond (Awesome Again), winner of Saturday=sBreeders= Cup Distaff, may return to the race in 2007,according to trainer Michael Matz Sunday. A[Rick Porter]was going to retire her before the race, and then yester-day, he said he might race her,@ Matz explained. AI thinkafter we get her back home, we=ll take a look at her andsee what he wants to do.@ The four-year-old filly, whocame out of the race with a minor cut on her right frontleg, was scheduled to ship to Fair Hill Training Center inMaryland yesterday.

MOTION OUTLINES PLANS FOR DUO Trainer Graham Motion outlined plans for his talentedpair of Breeders= Cup starters, Better Talk Now (TalkinMan) and Film Maker (Dynaformer), both runner up in

their respective divisions onthe turf Saturday. Accordingto Motion, Better Talk Nowmay race again this year.AWe=ll get together and con-template the Hong Kong Cup ifhe runs again this year,@ saidMotion. As for a 2007 cam-paign for the 2004 Breeders=Cup Turf champion? AWho=s to

say he won=t run next year [at Monmouth Park]? If heruns in Hong Kong, we can give him a break and plan aschedule to get him to the Breeders= Cup, as we didthis year,@ said Motion. Motion indicated that stable-mate Film Maker, who had been listed as a possibleentrant in the Hong Kong Vase in December, has beenretired and will be sent to Lane=s End and will be bredto Storm Cat. AIt=s disappointing that Film Maker had torun against Ouija Board all three years,@ said Motion. AInany other era, she=d have won at least one of thoseraces.@

OUT FOR THE REST OF 2006 Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Sunday that PegasusWind (Fusaichi Pegasus), 10 in the Juvenile, is doneth

for the year and will be brought back in 2007 with aneye on the Classics. AHe displaced his palate [Saturday],said Lukas, offering an explanation for the poor finish.AHe had never given any indication of anything like that.He doesn=t even wear a tongue tie or anything like that.He picked a bad day to do that. We will put some dif-ferent equipment on him and he will be fine.@ The coltfinished third in the GI Champagne S. at Belmont ParkOct. 14. A pair of horses from the Tom Amoss barn willalso get some time off, it was revealed yesterday. RushBay (Cozzene), fourth in the Turf, and Baghdaria (RoyalAcademy), seventh in the Distaff, will be sent to thefarm for 60 days, according to Amoss. AThere are noraces for them now,@ he explained. AThey will get awell-earned rest and I will bring them back next year. Our goal is to come back in the same kind of races withboth of them.@

ROB ROY TO REMAIN THE U.S. Rob Roy (Lear Fan), fifth behind Mile winnerMiesque=s Approval, will not return to England, butinstead will be sent to California to continue his careerwith trainer Neil Drysdale, according to the InternationalRacing Bureau. The four-year-old won the G2 Mile S. andwas runner up in the G1 Champion S. earlier this year.

The Age-Old Question... Keeneland has cataloged a total of 5,026 horses inseven books for this year=s sale. That number is a full12.3 percent larger than the 2005 book and features

2,495 broodmares, 2,106 wean-lings, 184 broodmare prospects,155 racing or broodmare pros-pects, 36 stallion prospects, 25racing or stallion prospects, 19racing prospects and six stal-lions. Also cataloged is a seasonto Afleet Alex, with proceeds of

this sale to benefit the charity AAlex=s LemonadeStand.@ Sales officials are hopeful that the increasedsupply will be welcomed in the marketplace. AThere=salways a concern about supply versus demand,@Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell com-mented. ABut the market has been very solid. The mar-ket has grown gradually over the past five years and it=sbeen fairly consistent. Eventually it will come to a timewhere there will be a correction.@ Last year=s auction, topped by the $9-million sale of Ashado to SheikhMohammed, saw gross receipts of $289,602,900, andan average of $102,842.

On the Cutting Edge... Over the past several years, Keeneland has recon-structed and upgraded the sales pavilion and the ser-vices offered there and has added a new technologicaladvancement for the November sale. In its repository,Keeneland becomes the first Thoroughbred auctionhouse to use digital X-rays, allowing multiple veterinari-ans to view X-rays on the same horse simultaneously.AIt=s just the progression of technology,@ Russell said.AWe=ve been using it here in Central Kentucky for thelast two years and it=s just the next step along the way.For the last two years, we=ve been receiving digital X-rays,but in film form. They=re already taking them digitally,so now we=re putting the images on the screen. It=s justanother way we try to take care of our clients.@

Godolphin capped a European season of mixed for-tunes with a Group 1 success courtesy of the reliablestalwart Cherry Mix, who produced another characteris-tic front-running display. In doing so, the grey regis-tered his third success at the highest level since beingacquired by Godolphin following his excellent second toBago (Fr) in the 2004 G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe.Having won the G1 Gran Premio del Jockey ClubItaliano at the San Siro last October, he was only thirdwhen attempting a repeat in that contest on his latestouting Oct. 15, but had previously shown he retainedall his ability with an overpowering score in Cologne=sAug. 13 G1 Rheinland-Pokal. Sent to the lead by TedDurcan from the outset, he dictated affairs before open-ing up at the top of the stretch and turning the screw inthe closing stages with his relentless gallop.

Ted gave him an excellent ride and he won withplenty in hand.@ Durcan added, AHe switched off welltoday and I was able to get a nice lead early on. CherryMix handled the ground well--he goes on any ground, but today was probably a bit faster than ideal. Hepicked up really well and ran all the way to the line.@Soldier Hollow (In the Wings {GB}), sent off the 17-10crowd=s choice to add a third Premio Roma to his re-sume, found disappointingly little when asked to closewide in the straight and could only muster a tamefourth.
