When thedust settled, it was Reddam=s mul-tiple Grade I winner Sharp Lisa(Dixieland Band) that brought the

sale=s top price of $3.4 million. The BBA Ireland=sAdrian Nicol made the winning bid. AIt=s for an interna-tional partnership, but that=s all I can say,@ said Nicol.The sale of Sharp Lisa came about two hours afterAndujar (Quiet American), another filly that woreReddam=s purple and white colors, was knocked downto My Meadowview Farm for $2.5 million. AI was sur-prised,@ admitted Reddam. AActually, I thought Andujarwould bring more than SharpLisa. [But Sharp Lisa=s] got thebloodlines, she=s all racehorseand they made a good pur-chase. Dixieland Band is a greatbroodmare sire and havingDynaformer on her bottom sideis great. the press box on the secondfloor of the sale pavilion, Hill >n=Dale=s John Sikura fought offall challengers for the filly, whowas purchased for Aa group ofus guys,@ said Sikura. Out ofthree-time stakes-winnerPlaycaller (Saratoga Six), Diplo-mat Lady has won four of her12 starts for over $550,000 in

earnings. In addition to the Starlet, she captured the2006 GII Stonerside Beaumont S. at Keeneland in April.Most recently, she was second in her turf debut, theOct. 15 Harold C. Gumberg pur-chased the three-year-old dark bay, who was catalogedas a racing or broodmare prospect, for $2.2 millionfrom the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. AI thoughtshe had the best page in the sale, and with her racerecord, we thought she was an outstanding broodmareprospect,@ said Gumberg, who did his bidding whileleaning against the rail of the rear walking ring. Theimpeccably bred Kamarinskaya was produced by Mr.P=s Princess, a Mr. Prospector half-sister to MGISWMenifee and MGISW Desert Wine, thus makingKamarinskaya a half to dual Group 1 winner and three-time champion Fasliyev. Ithink sometimes people have unreasonable expectations.Sometimes you take them home and that proves cor-rect, and sometimes you wished you would have sold.It=s a very fluid thing, values going up and down, andsometimes it takes years to see if you did the right orwrong thing.@

An Island Unto Himself... On more than one occasion, Island Fashion(Petionville) has been entered to sell at auction and onmore than one occasion, owner Jeff Nielsen decided tohang onto his prized mare, withdrawing her prior to thesales. Nielsen, who operates Everest Stables, finallyallowed the gray mare to go under the hammer atFasig-Tipton last night, but once again, Nielsen decidedto retain the mare, as she failed to meet her reservewhen bidding stalled out at an even $2 million. AWewere hoping for a little more than that,@ said PopeMcLean, whose Crestwood Farm consigned the six-year-old. AShe=s such a nice racemare and we felt shewas worth more than that. She was so versatile.@ IslandFashion proved to be one of the best of her generationin 2003, when she took the GI Alabama S. going 10furlongs at Saratoga and closed the season with avictory in the seven-furlong GI La Brea S., attractingmore than a few votes for an Eclipse Award. She racedon nicely at four, winningthe GI Santa Monica H. be-fore running second toSouthern Image in the GISanta Anita H. and alsoplaced twice in the GI JohnC. Mabee H. on the turf. Inthe end, it was too toughto part with the mare if themoney wasn=t there. AWehave mixed emotions aboutit,@ McLean continued. AI know Jeff would hate to seeher go, and maybe he=s somewhat happy that he stillhas her. She=s like a member of the family for theNielsens. It=s once in a lifetime that you have somethingthat good. In the long run, we=ll probably come out wayahead. First Things First for Reddam... Playing the warm-up act to Sharp Lisa was Andujar,who sold as hip 135. Reddam was sitting to the leftside of the sale pavilion when the Grade II winnerstepped into the ring, which, as it happened, put himright in the middle of the action. As bidding raced pastthe million-dollar mark, two groups near Reddam lockedhorns and went at it until Lincoln Collins, acting onbehalf of My Meadowview Farm=s Leonard Riggio,secured Andujar at $2.5 million. AShe=s a lovely, big,scopey mare,@ said Collins. ATo me, she=s everythingyou=d want to see in a broodmare. We=re starting abroodmare band, and this is the kind of mare youwant...if you can afford it.@ Collins said that Riggio,who sat alongside Collins with trainer Nick Zito, waslooking to start a Asmall but very selective@ band ofbroodmares who will most likely be based in Kentucky.Collins added that Andujar would be bred to A.P. Indy(AIf we can get to him,@ he said modestly), in part be-cause the A.P. Indy/Quiet American cross producedBernardini and A.P. Warrior. My Meadowview is bestknown as the owner of Noble Causeway. After thesale, Reddam was all smiles, but admitted to havingmixed emotions. AIt=s kind of bittersweet, because[Andujar] was a big favorite of mine,@ he said. AShe wasa fantastic mare and it was unfortunate that she gotinjured on the racetrack, because I thought her bestdays were ahead of her. I think she=s going to make agreat broodmare. If I were in that business, she=s theone I=d jump on.@ After beginning her career in Europe,Andujar was purchased privately by Reddam andbrought to America. She won three of her first fourstarts in the U.S., including a rousing seven-length tallyin the GII Milady BC H. in 2005. She also finished aclose-up third in last year=s GI Vanity H. On a nightwhen several high-profile lots failed to meet their re-serve, Reddam said he had come to Newtown Pad-docks to sell. AWe set a very low reserve, because weweren=t here to play games,@ he said. AThe folks at[consignor] Taylor Made said there was enough actionon her and weren=t really concerned about that. I wasconfident she=d bring over $2 million, but how far over,I didn=t know.@ In the 1980's TV show the A-Team,George Peppard=s ever-succinct character Hannibal usedto say AI love it when a plan comes together,@ and it=shard to think of a better way to sum up Reddam=sweekend. AThis is the best of all possible worlds, to buya horse privately for reasonable money, have a greattime racing them and then sell them for a big profit onthe end,@ Reddam said. AIt doesn=t get any better thanthat.@ A-men.

Close But No Cigar on Belva... Always a game performer, the four-year-old grassstar English Channel came up a bit short in Saturday=sGI Breeders= Cup Turf, finishing third behind Red Rocks

(Ire). It was a similar story yes-terday for his dam Belva, whowas led out of the Fasig-Tiptonsale ring unsold at $2 million.Things started quickly for theeight-year-old mare, in foal toHorse of the Year Ghostzapper,with bidding escalating pastthe seven-figure mark. Slowing

as the price neared $2 million, bidding stalled out com-pletely at that mark as auctioneer Terence Collier im-plored buyers for more, perhaps indicating the reservewas close to being surpassed. Charlie McKinlay, thefarm manager for owner and consigner Keene RidgeFarm, confirmed that was the case. AYeah, we weren=tfar away,@ he said. Standing in front of Belva=s stallafterwards, he added, AWe=re a bit disappointed, butshe=s still a pretty nice mare to be taking home.@ McKin-lay said that a deal still might be reached in the comingdays to sell the mare privately. AThere=s a couple daysof Keeneland, so for those people that get shut out,there=s a chance we=ll still get some more offers forher,@ said McKinlay. By Theatrical (Ire), the unracedBelva, bought privately by Keene Ridge in 2001 aftershe had RNA=d for $100,000 at the Keeneland Novem-ber sale, is a full-sister to MGSW Hap and GISWPharma.
