time, and I am thrilled that hewill be able to live out his goal ofswimming in college,” said ChrisBrookover, head coach of theYBCC Phoenix and director ofcompetitive swimming at theYMCA of Burlington and Cam-den Counties. “Eric still has plen-ty of upside potential, which willbe helpful to Ramapo as he growsas a swimmer. I am sure it will bea fantastic experience that he willvalue the rest of his life.”Henry, 18, started swimming
four years ago at WillowdaleSwim Club in Cherry Hill after
encouragement from friends tojoin the team. Prior to joining thesummer swim team, Henry hadnever taken a swim lesson.“I knew nothing about swim-

Willowdale worked tirelessly withme. Coach Jon Shepard was ex-tremely patient – as he took thetime to teach a 14-year-old how toswim from scratch and helped mewith proper technique.”Tireless dedication to the sport
and extra practice helped Henrygain the speed he needed to swimcompetitively in college. Afterfalling in love with the sport atWillowdale, Henry began to swimfor his high school team, CherryHill East, as well as the YBCCPhoenix team to continue to im-
prove histimes.“When I
met CoachChris, I didn’thave to thinktwice aboutwhere I want-ed to trainyear-round,”said Henry.“He’s a greatmotivator. All of us on the teamreally strive to make him andeach other proud – both in andout of the water.”Henry resides in Cherry Hill
with his parents and brother. For more information or to reg-

Cherry Hill resident Bruce A.Apple of Apple Physical Therapyrecently lived out his childhooddream of becoming a majorleague baseball player. “It was so much better than
what I expected,” said Apple afterreturning in late January from aweeklong trip to Tampa where heattended the New York YankeesFantasy Baseball Camp at theGeorge M. Steinbrenner Field.More than 100 men from across
the country, many from NewYork; some from as far as Aus-tralia, age 21 through 70 and be-yond, were given the official pinstripes with a self-chosen numberon the back. They changed in thesame locker room as the pros doduring spring training and then –divided into teams of 12 and 13 –flocked to the fields to play dailydouble headers.Warm ups and drills were led
by Yankee greats who also served
as team coaches. They includedOscar Gamble, Mickey Rivers,Bucky Dent, Al Downing, RonBlomberg, Gil Patterson, Orlando“El Duque” Hernández, JimLeyritz and Jesse Barfield. Besides the camaraderie that
developed with other lifelong fansand former players, highlights ofApple’s week included donningthe Yankees uniform for the firsttime inside the official team club-house and walking onto the fieldto face the “greats” during two in-nings of memorable baseball.Apple played third base andcleanly fielded a hard hitgrounder off the bat of JesseBarfield. “I was struck out by El Duque,”
said Apple, reflecting on his mo-ment in the batter’s box. “Ofcourse, I would rather have gottena hit but the fact that I fouled offtwo pitches was a bit of an accom-plishment considering he has
struck out many of the greats ofthe game, especially during play-offs and the World Series. FacingEl Duque was exciting, surreal.”

chools throughout the area re-cently celebrated National ReadAcross America, an annual mo-
tivation and awareness day encourag-ing children to read. While the Nation-al Education Association marks theevent on March 2 – the birthday ofbeloved children’s author Dr. Seuss –many schools turn the reading cele-bration into a week-long affair.National Read Across America,
however, goes far beyond March. Theoverarching purpose is to create life-long successful readers. And it’s ourjob to help this purpose come tofruition. Start young. Read to your children
every day. According to the U.S. De-partment of Education, 26 percent of
children who were read to three orfour times in the last week by a familymember recognized all letters of thealphabet. Children who are read to fre-quently also are more likely to countto 20 (or higher), write their own nameand read (or pretend to read). Fill your home with books and mag-
azines. Give your children endless op-tions. The Educational Testing Servicesays that the more types of readingmaterials there are in the home, the
higher students are in reading profi-ciency.Perhaps most importantly, make
reading fun. The U.S. Department ofEducation has found that the percent-age of high school seniors who read“for fun” is in decline, however themore students read for fun on theirown time, the higher their readingscores. Instill this lesson from the be-ginning. Reading is not work; readingis fun.And don’t forget to be a good read-
ing role model. Pick up a book foryourself, too. A child who sees theirparents reading will be more inclinedto read on their own, too.Let’s help create a generation of life-
long readers.
in our opinion
Let’s encourage reading all yearNational Read Across America aims to turn our children into life-long readers
Your thoughtsHow do you encourage reading in yourchildren? What are the best ways to makereading fun? Who are some of your kids’favorite authors? We would love to hearfrom you and share your answers.

$1.5 million health-care adjust-ment, districts can go over thecap if health-care costs rise morethan 2 percent from the previousyear. The preliminary budget also
includes banked cap from the2013-14 and 2015-16 school years. In those school years, the districtdid not increase taxes up to the 2percent cap. It is permitted to“bank” the difference betweenthe levy increase and the 2 per-cent cap to use in any budget overthe next three years. Devereaux noted this year is
the last chance to use the bankedcap from 2013-14 school year. “It will expire if not used this
year,” he said. Board member Steve Robbins
voiced his concern about thelarge increase in the tax levy. He
asked if the district could explorelowering the increase in theweeks ahead. “I’m a little concerned with the
use of banked cap as a matter ofprinciple,” Robbins said. The total budget will also in-
crease to approximately $191.489million, an $8.8 million increasefrom last year. One of the reasonsfor the increase is a decision theboard of education made lastTuesday through the passage of aseparate resolution. “This (increase) is partially
due to the pre-payment of leasepurchase two,” Devereaux said. Lease purchase two is the pay-
ment for the district’s boiler proj-ect, which took place in the dis-trict during the summer of 2014.The district does not have to payoff the lease purchase until 2018,but opted to do so two years aheadof schedule since it will have a lit-tle less than $2 million availablein state Regular Operating Dis-trict Grants. The district plans to
pay off the remaining $3,180,497on the lease purchase on July 1.Lease purchase two originallyamounted to $5,612,000. Robbins asked if not paying off
lease purchase two early wouldhelp lower the tax levy. Boardmember Elliott Roth noted payingoff the lease purchase early willsave the district money down theroad, and the money being usedto pay off the lease purchase can’tbe used elsewhere in the budget. “If we don’t use it, we’ll be pay-
ing interest to the bank,” Rothsaid.More details on the budget and
the first reading were scheduledto take place during a specialmeeting on Tuesday, March 15.After approval on first reading, the budget will be sent the Cam-den County superintendent’s of-fice for approval. The board istentatively scheduled to have asecond reading and public hear-ing on the budget at its regular ac-tion meeting on April 26.

vivors, caregivers and anyoneelse affected by the disease whoall come together to continuouslywalk laps around a track to sym-bolize how fighting cancer is sim-ilar to a relay race where every-one has a part to play.During the Relay events, par-
ticipants and their team mem-bers usually set up miniaturecampsites where they can relax, get to know the other teams, enjoy food, play music and evensell items or snacks to raise moremoney for the ACS.Ryan Legato, a member of the
Cherry Hill-Voorhees Relay lead-ership team, described Relayevents as ways to bring membersof the community together for afun event while also shining aspotlight on the fight against allforms of cancer.“There are a lot of people who
don’t get to experience a walk forjust their type of cancer and sothis is for them,” Legato said.Leadership team member and
cancer survivor Jeanette Golden, who was one of the mainfounders of the Voorhees Relayseveral years ago before the eventalso covered Cherry Hill, said shehas been participating in RelayFor Life for nearly 20 years. Now that the Cherry Hill-
Voorhees event is more estab-lished, this year Golden said shehoped to get more kids and stu-dents involved with the cause, es-pecially those who have familymembers who were affected bycancer.“These kids need an outlet and
this is a great outlet for them tofeel like they’re doing something… these kids just want so badly tomake a difference in the lives ofpeople with cancer,” Golden said.Legato also agreed that Relay
was a great way for kids to feelmore empowered in the fightagainst cancer.“Pretty much everybody has
someone in their life, either a rel-ative or a friend or a friend’s rela-tive that has been affected, so re-
ally it’s everyone’s problem, which makes it a worthwhilecause,” Legato said.Changes to this year’s Relay in-
clude a move to new location atBeck Middle School in CherryHill, and the event will also takeplace about one month earlier, onMay 21, to provide for cooler tem-peratures.The event will also have slight-
ly longer hours than last year, with this year’s Relay set to lastfrom 2 to 11 p.m.For those who have never par-
ticipated in Relay before, Goldensaid the fundraising and effort iswell worth it.“I’ve gotten way more than I’ve
given, so the more you give ofyourself in any position, themore you get in return,” Goldensaid. Those interested in registering

Racquet Club, and Melissa Be-nenfeld-Merovitz, a local chiro-practor, are partners in the up-coming dance competition.Pascale has experience as a
chair for Relay for Life in the pastand wanted to do an event to ben-efit the Cherry Hill EducationFoundation. He had an idea for arace and thought Garden StatePark would be a great location.Pascale met with Janice Biren-baum, asset manager for GardenState Park. “It sounded like a great idea to
her,” Pascale said. “She met withEleanor Stofman and Mel Zim-merman (from Cherry Hill Edu-cation Foundation) and they likedthe idea. As the parties began dis-
cussing the park run, Pascale wasnamed as Benenfeld-Merovitz’partner for Dancing with the
Cherry Hill Stars. Benenfeld-Merovitz was excited to get in-volved with the park run afterhearing about the idea. The pairwas able to connect the eventwith the fundraising they weredoing for Dancing with the Cher-ry Hill Stars. “I love to run, so I got in-
volved,” she said.Planning for the run has been
ongoing since January. Pascaleand Benenfeld-Merovitz havegone to all of the retailers in Gar-den State Park to get them onboard with sponsoring the race.Pascale said there are a numberof costs with staging a 5K. He washoping to have sponsors pay forall of the expenditures so all ofthe proceeds from runners andwalkers could go to CHEF. “(The sponsors) are paying for
all of the logistics of the race,”Pascale said. “The signage, theposters, the t-shirts. We have tohire the police to escort the run-ners through the course.”Many of the businesses were
excited to get involved and are do-nating more than just money. Do-nated prizes will be awarded tothe fastest male and female adultand child under 18. In addition, all participants will be entered ina drawing to win a grill fromHome Depot. “Every participant is going to
get a goodie bag,” Pascale added.“It will have discounts from thesponsors for all of the race partic-ipants as well as a race t-shirt.”With sponsors locked up, Pas-
cale and Benenfeld-Merovitz arenow looking to get runners andwalkers signed up for the event.
Benenfeld-Merovitz’ son set up awebsite, www.garden-stateparkrace.org, where partici-pants can sign up for the event ordonate. In addition, the pair isputting up signs in places every-where from the stores at GardenState Park to all of the township’sschools. “We started with posters in the
stores,” Pascale said. “We got a lotof retailers in Garden State Parkto participate.”“I contacted the coaches for
track and cross country at CherryHill East,” Benenfeld-Merovitzadded. “I talked to teachers andstudents. We’re going to marketit in all of the schools and we’regoing to put up signs every-where.”Pascale doesn’t want this run
to be just a one-time deal. He be-lieves this could become a large-scale annual event in the town-ship. “This is a way that Melissa and
I and Janice can stay in touchwith each other and build some-thing valuable,” he said. “Whenthe three of us met for the firsttime, we realized this was some-thing we could make an annualevent.”“There’s a lot to be gained,”
Pascale added. “It’s going to be afun event.”Registration is now open for
the Garden State Park Run andWalk. The cost to participate is$25 in advance or $30 the day ofthe event. The 5K run will beginat 8 a.m., with the one-mile walkfollowing at 8:30 a.m. To registeror for more information, visitwww.gardenstateparkrace.org.
