SUCCESSTransforming Chemistry Education

Added in 1963, OCU’s chemistry laboratories were last renovated in the late 1980s.

Despite working around outdated facilities, OCU students using the chemistry labs continue to excel. Imagine what they could do in updated labs.

Inspired Learning Oklahoma City University has a tradition of excellence in science education. In the last year, 90 percent of science students were accepted into their professional school of choice, and among recent biochemistry graduates, 100 percent who applied to pharmacy school have been accepted. Personalized instruction by exceptional faculty ensures our students have a solid preparation for their career of choice.

Only one element is missing from this winning formula: chemistry laboratory facilities that match the quality of our students, faculty, and instruction.

But that is all about to change.

A Transformative InvestmentOklahoma City University has initiated a fundraising campaign to invest $2.2 million in renovation of the Dawson-Loeffler chemistry laboratory facilities. This renovation will create an environment that prepares our students for new discoveries.

A Chain ReactionRenovated labs benefit the entire university. All science majors use the chemistry labs during at least one semester. The chemistry department teaches courses for the nursing school. General education chemistry, pre-med programs, and the university’s new Physician Assistant program make use of the labs. Having better labs means more than better experiments. It also allows for better results in student recruitment.

The OCU Difference – Cutting Edge InstructionIn the liberal arts tradition, OCU chemistry faculty provide a unique educational experience steeped in the sciences and tied to the humanities. Aspiring chemists, nurses, pharmacists, and physicians learn how to relate the sciences to the human experience. Dr. Stephen Prilliman, chair of the chemistry department, is engaged with a national group utilizing a new technique called “Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning.” Instead of the traditional learning model of a lecture followed by a lab experiment, POGIL incorporates student-centered inquiry-based instruction, increasing the potential for hands-on learning.
